2 girls one cup:

Spoiler:
Porno, involving lesbians eating poo, making out with it in their mouths, and some more stuff that I wish not to speak of.
General_Norris: Taking pride in your nation is taking pride in the division of humanity.
Pirate.Bondage: Let's get married. Right now.

Am I a nerd if I instantly recognized 65536 as being 2^16?

Or did everyone do that? :?

That's what I was thinking. I'm not getting bored of XKCD, it's just that the earlier comics seemed more original.

I think anyone who ever did something with 16 bit integers would have gotten that. Of course, that probably qualifies them as nerds too.

Umm, so . . .?

I don't get it.

So the title says it's the other way around. Girls on X and Cups on Y.

MrRubix wrote:Call me nitpicky, but did anyone else get slightly bugged by the plural form being left alone?

Same here! That always bugs me immensely.

As an aside, for a comic about language, I'm seeing surprisingly little comics about language, and surprisingly many spelling errors and sloppiness, language-wise.

Just in case anyone was wondering ... I did a search for "2 lumberjacks 1 stein." There were no results, thank god.

The following is the reaction shot of 6 girls watching the gross video. You cannot see the video, this is entirely safe for work and sanity, I swear.

And it's pretty funny.

I can't believe they keep going back to watching it. And two of the girls have clearly seen the video before and/or have strong stomachs.

I cant' see any problem with 1 girl and 2 cups:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupsize

but then over here in the UK we don't use the word 'cup' for these things:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jockstrap#Protective_cup

So I suppose if *that* image was in your head then yeah, 1 girl 2 cups.. Hmm. We call those cups 'boxes'. 1 girl 2 boxes would be interesting....

I also do not know what this is referring to unless it is cup sizes, but am now too scared to google it.

Is anyone able to ungraphically explain this? No details or specifics just general direction please.

I actually googled what 2 girls 1 cup was, as I had no clue. I think I've managed to throughly desensitize myself to imagery, so it really doesn't affect me anymore to see "shock sites" or similar.

It amazes me how many hits it has though.

It's footage of a girl bringing her inner self to the attention of another girl. They consume the essence of what was brought to their attention and both have an outpouring of emotions over the matter. Their cup runneth over.

Hmm, methinks a few people got out of the wrong side of bed this morning! I find the concept of applying statistical or other scientific methods to memes or other cultural ephemera a subject with plenty of humorous potential. It has a fairly good pedigree, from a David Attenborough impressionist narrating a natural history program on football fans, to Stanley Baxter's "Parliamo Glasgow".

Randall's comic carries on in that line, albeit at a tangent (in the colloquial sense).

Somehow I keep thinking these are sad times, when nearly everybody, including myself, knows what this is about. This couldn't have been in the minds of those who invented the Internet. Seriously.

Gotta love XKCD though.

ok, this is the second time it is mentioned so it is worth a reply

if M is a matrix
then M _ij or (M(i,j)) is the element at the ith row and jth column.
this is standard.
it just means that you have to take care if you use matrices to store images and then render them as they are.
(but anyway 0,0 is top left instead of bottom left, so that is your hint right there)

edit, sorry if i jumped the bait and you were just trolling/being sarcastic a bit, i had just reread the way you spelled 'axes' and realized you could have been having a go at people, and not actually making that comment.

Maybe that's it: it's been done many times before already, and with better effect. The only comedy that I find here is doing 'serious' scientific research on something ridiculous. That's funny, yes, but I've seen that many, many times before. Add to that that the results aren't surprising: obviously x=2 and y=1 get the most results, we all know it's called 2girls1cup. And obviously as the numbers get more extreme, there are less results.

The 'Grapefruit' comic was much more effective, in my opinion. Laying out fruit in a graph to determine their qualities based on taste and ease of use is funny and unexpected, and perusing the results was amusingly recognizable. Here it's just.. "Oh yeah, 4 girls 5 cups gets no results... I guess that makes sense, yeah."

They are not labelled wrong!

Any choice of co-ordinates/variables is completely arbitrary. Just because he has used the variable "x" to denote the number of girls does not force the variable "x" to be on the horizontal axis.

Between this, the "Google results for 'Killed in an X accident'" comic, the "Wood in popular culture" comic, etc., I think it's a conspiracy to see how big of an impact he can actually have on the major areas of the internet simply by putting up comics on them. The one caused "Killed in a blogging accident" to suddenly appear everywhere, the other caused the Wood article to be protected for a time. Shouldn't we expect this one to make references to odd numbers of girls and cups, plus something about french hens and turtledoves or 12 days of internet memes, to suddenly show up all over?
We are god's unwanted children, so be it!

It's not so bad, but the "apply-the-scientific-method-to-something-ludicrous" approach has been done better, generally by Randall. You can see what he was going for, but it lacked the funny.

However, Randall always surprises us with brilliance after something like this, so let's not worry too much.

65536 -> I knew that I used in in a C program but I've forgotten that it was 2^16.
How many points do I lose ?

2 girls 1 cup -> I thought I've finally got rid of those pictures in my head, but now the are back ..... Image
By the way it could be worse theres an infinte amoung of possibilities for x girls y cups. Hopefully theres no one out there trying to apply Rule 34 on all those.

Anyway I liked the comic. I like the "apply-the-scientific-method-to-something-ludicrous" approach in genreal.

True story: when I first saw 2girls, it was a flash video and the (paused) player showed a frame from the video, namely the titular cup, and I honest to god thought it was a chocolate sorbet.

It even looked kind of tasty.

I can't imagine that 2G1C is more disgusting than a video I saw about 15 years ago.
Spoiler:
It was of a young asian woman, who looked completely stoned, making herself throw up in a bowl and then re-eating it.
Vile.
In any case, thanks for explaining what this was before I looked at it.

I searched for Rule 34 on the interweb, but somehow I don't think it is about legal discovery or short selling in the stock market. Can someone please enlighten me?
Huh? What?
