Although I barely post, I feel the need to tell you all goodbye. And the CERN guys probably divided by zero somewhere anyway.

The title text is pretty funny and I think is probably the best part of this particular comic.

I don't really like the last panel. Too much unnecessary detail, maybe. Maybe I'm just a prude.

Gah. I read the comic, thinking "Hmm, it's interesting, but there's no real joke. The alt-text is vaguely amusing, though." Then I read your post.

Gah.

(On a side note, I wonder why the comic is a link to the non-existant http://www.xkcd.com/None? I assume Randal has some sort of system set up for when he wants comics to link to things, and for whatever reason it messed up on this one.)

Found this at Digg yesterday. Oh Randall, not even your science comics can avoid being memes these days.

Hey, we're just now studying quarks in Astronomy. But yeah, the LHC jokes have been flying around here lately.

Ah, I totally missed the quark references on the first couple read-throughs. (What can I say? Like joee, the only reason I know the names of the quarks at all is because of trivia competitions.) Now the punchline makes much more sense. :D

Anyone else get confused by the transition between the second and third panels? I mean, I get it now: The guy starts walking away, so the girl says her line. But I had to read to read it more than once to understand what exactly the girl was responding to in the third panel, since no one else had said anything and my eyes were drawn to the dialog before looking at the picture.

The title of the comic itself is a pretty clever pun.

Hmm...so quarks are named in the last panel?

Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Charm, and Strange. I had to use Wikipedia for the last two, but...

Dammit Randall. >_<

Spoiler:
I missed them the first time through also.

Yeah, that quark thing is pretty good.

Good job this time, RANDALL

Though, a message to all the people that liked the comic without getting the quark thing:

I seriously question your judgement.

I admit to not catching the quark names on my own despite being an ex-physics major. But the LHC reference is still funny on its own.

It could destory us all!

What, really? All that's said is "top or bottom." You even get to decide whether that's a physical position or a BDSM proposal, it's so vague.

Anyway, the comic right now appears to be a hyperlink to a 404 page. Bizarre.
Raise up the torch and light the way.

It's not that I was offended or anything. It's just I thought all it did was provide more information about the details of their one-night stand, which I didn't need to get the comic. Of course, this was before I got the quark joke.

This "end of the world / it could destroy the earth" nonsense is the worst media catchphrase in decades.

As a mathematician, these types of things turn me on in a bizarre way too whether it by a sexy proof or a particle accelerator which might destroy the world or alternatively may reveal the "G-d particle." Is there something wrong with me?

I missed something. How did "top" and "bottom" come about? I would have sworn it was "truth" and "beauty."

Did they change it so "top" and "bottom" jokes could be made?

Well, I finally signed up to point this out, and point it out I jolly well shall (though I know it's been pointed out about a page and a half ago; bloody EDGE connection!):
What's up with that link to http://xkcd.com/None?

Besides that, I did get it (I'm a grad student in engineering, but a bit of a physics buff on the side); funny enough, but the title pun really made it.

It's almost a pity it won't destroy the world, because that'd be cool, but I guess there's always next megacollider.

I'm not worried about the LHC.. I'm worried that the density of bad physics innuendo in that strip may actually be high enough to create a micro black hole...

Your colorful particle physics references have, as expected, come out on top. It's up in the air whether any more of it will go down in this thread, but I highly doubt it'll bottom out.

Let's put a creative spin on things, shall we?

Okay, I was just explaining what the LHC is to my girlfriend. I told her that there's a minuscule chance that a black hole will form. She replied (over IM), "Wow, ultimate suck." Bad puns ftw.
