Alt Text: For the first time ever, the phrase 'I'd like to thank everyone at 4chan for making me successful and happy' is uttered.

Lolcats anyone? I'm sure those can be used as an unit of currency. =D

I'm rich! Thank you, subjectivity of the word "funny"!

So I can pretty much post any image in this thread and as long as it is sort of funny it'll be on topic?

Unless the Internet is filled with Marxists who just want to spread the wealth, this would also have the side effect of severely slashing the number of "funny pics lol" floating around the tubes, as people struggled to hoard their fortunes to themselves.

I like the idea.

Does 4chan have a specific board for images without pornography? Because I really don't want to deal with pornography on my family's computer.

So then I guess funny pictures become currency. So anyone with a camera and a cat would basically never have to work again. Hmm.

The alt text confused me. Unless something has seriously changed, 4chan pics would still be worthless. I believe the word "funny" was used as a qualifier.

NOTE: I still laughed, though. I realize, that sometimes a fantasy world must be maintained for the sake of a joke.

Also, I wouldn't do very well. I bookmark things. I'd have to make my own, and I'm not very funny.

What about funny videos? Is value based on size, or humour, or will it be determined by some kind of free market, where punters will invest in Lolcat futures?

The alt text reminds me of this thread in /a/ once where the OP was Nozomu Itoshiki (the teacher from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei) saying "list 10 failing you've made in life" or something of the sort. The posts usually went something like:
*Not getting a job in HS
*Asking that girl out in 9th grade
*Not killing the bitch for laughing at me
*4chan
*4chan
*4chan
*4chan

(I remember all this because I screencapped a snippet of the thread, don't feel like posting the screencap here though)

True, but "one of" may not actually be necessary in this case.
I mean, how many pictures does Microsoft have on file? (Well, they do have a lot, but probably not as many. Google probably is more focused on cataloging things.)

a few questions. Is this an absolute transfer (i.e. a fixed pictures to wealth ratio) or is it about your own ratio of funny to non-funny pictures? Also, how much would this comic be worth if I saved it to my hard drive now? Can i invest the comics? Any chance of receiving a bailout from Gary Larson should a picture series cease to be amusing? Consider the catastrophic (no pun intended) effects of a total failure of the LOLCat industry! Do multiple copies of the same picture increase your wealth? The chance for counterfeiting seems astronomical. Thanks!

What the heck would the definition of counterfeit be? duplication would be too easy. I may sound like I'm trying to be a party pooper, or overthinking, but I'm actually just broaching the subject so I can reference the 'leaves as currency' legislation of the Golgafrinchans in "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." To counter massive inflation, they decide to burn down nearly all trees.
And is the phrase "number of funny pictures" open to personal interpretation ('cause, you know, most laws are totally that way). If so, I'd take one (very small, grainy) funny picture and multiply it to fill the drive.
But yeah, I don't usually save, or even bookmark any funny pictures, just funny websites. But if it counts for anything, I laughed so long and hard at the "Snakes on every plane" comic that I printed it full page and tacked it to my bedroom wall. It was really late.
Totally random totally awesome SF quote:
Jorane Sutt put the tips of carefully-manicured fingers together and said, "It's something of a puzzle. In fact--and this is in the strictest confidence--it may be another one of Hari Seldon's crises."

Suddenly, nobody laughs at anything but their own pictures.

Not that this would happen right now, though: we're actually in a deflationary period, which is, of course, just as bad as inflation.

So what if it was a picture of a funny picture? Would it then count for twice the normal amount? Cause then you could make the picture infinitely recursive and have all the money you wanted.

To those mentioning counterfeiting: the problem is pretty self-limiting... a given picture gets less funny, the more often you see it, so any counterfeiting scheme that involves making many copies of the same picture is doomed to failure as the picture loses its funny. Even 4chan memes and such only survive through new pictures being made from the same jokes... if the same pictures were used every single time, the meme wouldn't survive nearly as long.

Thank you xkcd, you've made me a profit.
atimholt wrote: I laughed so long and hard at the "Snakes on every plane" comic that I printed it full page and tacked it to my bedroom wall. It was really late.

I did the same with "Cat Proximity", now I repeat the alt text to my friend Catherine every time it enters my room. I too also thought of that Hitchhiker's situation when I read this.
Another important point would be what factor would the funny picture value be based on..
by file resolution: 200px^2 = 1 unit
by single files: 1 file = 1 unit
by comedic value: I'm not sure how to make that.. uh.. feasible.

Clearly amount of pictures is shown.. but what if we wanted it to really work!!
