0517: "Marshmallow Gun"

Alt: Except in reality crossing a stream of marshmallows would create a giant Bill Murray.

Do kids today even remember GhostBusters? Man I loved that movie.
Bit of a "wut?" moment there
[edit:] so that's where "lol" came from! It's cause I'm normally more dignified than saying that.

I'm sure Bill would take the role.

Let's make it happen.

This one flew over my head. I got the GhostBusters reference, I just can't find the punchline. Then again, maybe marshmallow guns are just too awesome for a punchline. I mean come on.

I saw one of these guns in the mall today, and it has a list of warnings written on the gun. One of them says, "Do not eat marshmallows after shooting." Er, what?

p.s. 6453893: I don't think the Mr. Stay-puff Marshmallow Man would be too happy to see someone shooting marshmallows out of a gun...

Well In ghostbusters when they crossed the streams the god disappeared. Gozer the Gozerian!

I think the idea is that by crossing streams of marshmallows they brought back the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the end of the Ghostbusters movie, and he doesn't think favorably of people using marshmallows as ammunition.

It's a little nonsensical, but I laughed.

In Ghostbusters crossing the streams caused photon reversal, reversing the evil dimension from whence the Stay Puft Marshmallow man came. So basically the comic just references Ghostbusters without saying anything witty about it, which is the lowest form of parody.

I stand disappointed.

Though I liked the first half.

Colliding* high-energy marshmallows yields miniature marshmallows**!

See also: 401, 509 and 474.

* Head-on. Much more dangerous than mere crossing.
** As opposed to miniature black holes.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

I guess that's fair. I think the comic is supposed to say more about marshmallow guns than it is about Ghostbusters though. So the concept is "marshmallow guns make me think about other times marshmallows have intersected with guns, and I guess that's the Ghostbusters movie."

This comic would've worked better as two comics, with the different rows as a separate comic. Then again, the "scene/trendsters" comment (in the first panel of the second row) wouldn't have worked as well (well, I suppose it could be re-written to tie in, but I digress).

Anyway, has it ever annoyed anyone that the scene/trendsters will take over anything remotely cool, ruining it for the rest of us? In a way, I like to joke that I lead some trends because, almost without fail, within a month of my consistantly doing something reasonably out of the ordinary, some punk-ass kid and his/her friends are all doing it too. I should start openly and casually stealing cars during the Super Bowl, just to see how many people do it at the next major sporting event (the Final Four, if I'm not mistaken).

Finally, in Ghostbusters, crossing the streams would cause "total protonic reversal" which would "stop all life as you know it instantaneously and every molecule in your body explode at the speed of light". It's a basic scientific fact: crossing the streams would be bad. Didn't you get the memo?

EDIT:

Woot.com is a site that offers deals on fairly random merchandise, either discontinued or refurbished. Every midnight they roll out a different thing, and if supplies are low, it'll be gone in minutes. Loads of subculture and in-jokes on their forums, but I got scared and came back here. I'm not sure why.

Just a warning, (in the event you're serious) many schools have zero tolerance policies for "weapons". Which, because it has some gun-like qualities, a marshmallow gun may be considered.

Yeah that's what I figured too...but ....seriously... I don't know that it follows... crossing streams is just dangerous...

Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

So...I would think that crossing marshmallow streams would just cause all marshmallows to revert into fluff form. YEY FLUFF!

The super soaker makes the girl's hair fly back with its tremendous power, but not the marshmallow gun.

But the more I think on it, the more absurd the concept of hair flying back due to gunfire is.

Not a huge fan of this comic. It seemed promising at the outset but I kind of had to think for a bit at the end before I got it, and it was a bit of a let down. Usually when Randall starts with a concept as random and wonderful as marshmallow guns, he's going somewhere with it.

Also, I like how the main character trails off after "don't cross the..." because, of course, he can't say beams, because marshmallows are discrete units.

Indeed, many schools are more interested in preventing students from bringing in things whose names contain the word gun, or things shaped vaguely like guns, or, God forbid, pictures of guns, than in preventing actual violence.
