I confess I was only following the flow chart to post first . . .

This one made me chuckle. Well played, Randall.

If he had labelled the arrow leading away from "Good" as "Yes", shouldn't there have been a "No" arrow, just for the fun of it?

Never tried it, now I have an excuse.

The "Wait, what?" ending is my favorite, closely followed by the "I hate you" one. The contradictions required to get there are hilarious.

This is an idea that I never would have thought of, but sort of wish I had.

To be honest, the alt text was confusing to me at first... when I saw Bob I thought "bend over buddy" just because Microsoft has been known to screw its customers. But then I googled it and I laughed a little more than normal. Well played comic

This one made me chuckle too, but I don't really understand what freeBSD has to do with flowcharts.

Am I missing some part of the joke, or is this just Randall trying to make his comic less accessible?

This rather made me laugh, even though I have no reason to think FreeBSD is a bad idea.

Isn't it the most popular of the BSDs? Or am I thinking of OpenBSD?

Also, as far as I can tell, this thread was posted first.

Now is that a flow chart or a finite-state automaton?

This is a lie. Strong drink isn't enough to convince anyone that installing Bob is a good idea.

It is ironic, though, considering that the hthall said "I confess I was only following the flow chart to post first..."

Very true. I've gone through it about 10 times or so now, and I'm about to go through a few more times.

Edit: I'd say that Randall should either remove the "yes" coming from "good" or add a "no" line. Just having the one seems odd.

That's a processing step rather than a decision step. The result of Good is always Yes, provided that the input has been properly validated.

I think I'll go validate a good beer now (or 6). Yes. No decision required.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

Dunno if there would be much point, really, but I have to ask: Randall, just what inspired you to draw this in the first place? Was it a bad encounter with a flowcharting in the dim past and you just re-discovered your old plastic flowchart templater? Or was there a drunken conversation with a mainframe programmer?

OK, I won't ask. But perhaps you've heard the term beer goggles?

Yep, you won by 22 seconds. Congratulations, and sorry. I followed a "No" arrow from "Check topics list: Has someone already posted a topic for this comic?" but apparently I was wrong by a few seconds, and then by the time I had followed the post-posting part of the flowchart to the point where you change your date formats to seconds to see who was really first so you can concede your own thread if necessary, there were already too many posts here to delete it. From this point the flowchart as I understand it seems to indicate apologizing (Sorry!) and letting the thread-merging moderator wizards do their stuff.

I suspect that the reason more people posted in this thread than the other is that a) they look like a tie from default date settings and b) my inane remark about a flowchart for posting new topics satisfied (minimally) the "provide some commentary" rule. (The exceedingly nit-picky c) missing space before "Discussion" probably had nothing to do with it.)

As a person with difficulty thinking in two dimensional terms (3d is much easier, dont ask me, ask my neurologist), I always found flow charts to be a somewhat limited form. In this case, one is simply used to visualize a recursive dichotomous key, but for more complex data, the form's inherit limits begin to show.

Oh, and the comic was quite humorous.

Actually, the missing-title thread was yet a third topic, started a few minutes later, whose author has since had the good sense to delete it.
