This one struck me as sort of a self-ribbing on Randall's part, as a reference to all of the graph-based comics he's done recently. Good comic.

My first thought was about NOFX's song "The Decline."
My first thought on topic was that this was a pretty funny comic today.

The Fourier Transform, helping you sleep on the coach since 1822.
The alt text made this one.

his cat also had the one month peak.

I know!
It's really weird that Randall would put a comic about graphs when I JUST looked at a graph in the paper.

Indeed. Randall is a little too fond of graphs, as many of us here apparently are judging from our enjoyment of his constant use of them.

So the frequency of <3 in their relationship increased briefly at one month?

I don't get it. Fourier transforms spike when there's a sharp corner, right? So the original plot of love vs. time has a sharp corner at t = 1 month, which somehow implies something?
edit: Or it could just be the frequency of love increasing... But why did she cut off his statement then? Unless there was a biological reason for the frequency increasing, but then wouldn't it be a recurring thing?

The spike indicates a
periodic component with that wavelength. So there is a monthly cycle in their relationship.

Something's wrong here. A Fourier transform cannot have a spike at "the 1-month mark". The base axis of such a transform is frequency, not time. There is nowhere on the transform you can point and say it's "the 1-month mark".

I think the graph jokes are funny. Am I the only one who thinks the graph jokes are funny? Even Randall doesn't think the graph jokes are funny. I wonder why no one thinks the graph jokes are funny?
But seriosuly people, you should really know that 46% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Be warned.

I give the fellow credit for convincing his significant other to attend the meeting.

I'm torn as to whether or not you feel better about yourself at my expense, or if it's something else altogether. The lack of communication in that respect leads to doom.
That, and the voices. Sneaky bastards...

A wavelet transform offers better resolution in the time as well as in the frequency domain. I wonder if that would result in deeper insights.

Yeah, although the idea of defining love, and plotting it against time is a good one. I should try remembering my past relationships and trying to find those spots where things go downhill.
