0535: "It Might be Cool"

Alt text:"'And ovaries. Man, ovaries, huh?' [awkward pause] '... faithfully.'"

That would be a swearing in worth watching, possibly even more than the great one we just witnessed.

Interesting. This was kinda random. I was also surprised that he released it so long after the inauguration.

It's possible I'm just missing something??

It was the alt text that made it wonderful for me!

I'd assume it was released now, instead of right after the inauguration because either
A) Randall has a buffer of comics, so if he's unable to comic for a few days, all of us don't rage.
or
B) Not everyone actually thought it was as big a deal as some people are making it.

Not only is the comic tasteless but it is also surprisingly dull.
You disappoint, Mr. Munroe.

It's not even worth trolling.
Good day to you.

It has been far too long since I have actually laughed at an XKCD comic, let alone laugh twice. The main comic and the "Faithfully" did it. Yay for topical humor.

I feel that somehow... this whole mediocre comic was drawn so as to type the alt text... ... ...Faithfully.

Randall makes his comics ahead of time. It's not that late after.

The president doesn't have his hand up, by the way.
Also, thank you Randall, for realizing that it was the justice who screwed up, and not Obama.

Randal, get out of my body. Seriously, started Shark Week a few days ago and this time it sucked epicly. Cramps snuck up on me at a time when I should have been in my safe zone. Whoever said women were the weaker sex never had a period with cramps or childbirth to deal with. And I will stop now before I gross out the boys on the forum. ^^

The alt-text was what made todays comic, very nicely done.
On a side note our resident troll has forgotten to improperly format and colour pink his second comment.

I actually kinda like the troll. He's so .. .nonoffensive, and only posts once for each new strip. That's not really trolly at all. It's more cute than anything.

Um... unless all the menstruating readers of xkcd somehow had their periods sync up, it is really pretty unremarkable that this comic should come out within a few days of someone's period.

Also, I'm sure plenty of women have called women the weaker sex. Learned weakness is really powerful like that.

Aren't females naturally weaker than men in the upper body, and men weaker than women in the lower body? This is what I've heard. Not that a woman couldn't work out and become stronger.

Well, weakness has a lot of meanings besides pure physical strength, so the idea of calling either sex "weaker" just doesn't seem like that useful of a label.

I don't really get what is so funny about this comic

but seeing what it is like to be a woman is on my list of x things to do in life (x since I can just change it to the number of things i've actually done, then i've done everything I wanted to do in my life!)

You know, having heard about this gaffe so many times (not having a TV), this comic was the last straw that made me finally look it up.

"I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully."

...really? That's it?

What the fuck?!

Platitudes about "hope" and "change" sound more convincing when the party doesn't act like a schoolyard bully.

I agree. I was just talking about physical strength. I don't think that females are naturally mentally, emotionally or whatever weaker than men. I don't think that they can't handle pain as well either. Any differences are sociological.

Do you mean you don't understand what the joke is supposed to be, or you just don't think the joke is funny?
The joke is that the justice messed up the oath, and that messed Obama up. Randall is meditating on how bad he'd be at administering it, and how his scattered brain would be thinking about something random, and the president repeating it. The punchline is on the bottom, and that's where you realize that it's an oath, while you were expecting them to just be friends having a weird conversation. He's messing with your expectations.

They did make change, they changed the way a president gets inaugurated(with a party) and how the news perceives it (who cares about parties, lets make a presidential bloopers reel)

Also, where is the pole over whether or not it might be cool to be a woman (I vote yes for a day just to see what its like......okay to play with boobies)

Hell, I've seen men say that "Men are inferior" - what kind of person realises that women aren't inferior and then instead of settling at equality goes across to the other extreme? (Not that he started on any particular side, but you know what I mean).

I think where the humor is supposed to be coming from is the awkwardness that Barack Obama would probably feel if he was prompted to swear in by saying "You know, it might be cool to be a woman..." contrasted with the awkwardness Barack Obama did appear to feel when prompted by John Roberts to recite an incorrect pledge.

Though maybe that's not it, because if that's what this comic is about the fact that the comic is also about menstruation seems really out of left-field and not really that elegant or cohesive.
