Weird, Randall. This just confirms my theory that we are the same person, going to work when I think am asleep, (no wonder I am so tired in the mornings). I was just thinking of this two days previous, not doing the graph on a baseball field but attempting to explain it with a bit of humour, and I would have to if it wasn't for those pesky exams I am in.
Anyway, loved it.

I had noticed this, yes. (the fact that she appears to be lesbian. also that she is sitting on the top of the couch. XD)

This is a highly entertaining comic, and unlike the many users groaning and moaning about it, (.....sure, that too) I appreciated the base 2 pun ^.^ Clever. Not extraordinarily creative or imaginative, but clever, none the less.

My boyfriend and I are always trying to figure out what base is for what action. Clears things up = P

Easy. Foreplay is making Kama Sutra positions out of paper, the actual act is performing them.

Kinky origami is folding the positions while having sex.

The only thing disappointing about this comic is the lack of an all your base reference (or, quite possibly, my lack of noticing said reference).

I think the confusing thing about this metaphor is wether it's meant to be the location of the batter or the location of the baseball. What would be going the wrong way by one definition is a home run by the other.

You know, baseball and relationships go together well. I know someone who took his girlfriend to a baseball game. He kissed her between the strikes, and she kissed him between, well... you know.

Great comic!

Whenever I hear about the "bases," it reminds me of how John Gray, the Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus guy, did a detailed analysis of this system that was so incredibly serious that it amused me to no end... I think the discussion on this forum pretty well discredits the notion that these terms are useful to "facilitate clear communication with a man about sex.

I take issue with the "boring zone." There are lots of interesting things in between kissing and hands-under-shirts.

SomethingAwesome wrote:Strange that nobody has commented on the girl being a lesbian.

Maybe because xkcd readers have evolved to the point of perceiving queerness as normal and unremarkable, and so they're no more likely to say "whoa, that girl's a lesbian!" than to say "whoa, that boy is straight!" :D

Well, maybe these terms work better for people who are into baseball. What we need is a more nerd-friendly metaphor.

but you see, the diagram is two dimensional, and includes a 'move past go and do not collect 200 dollars' function. modeling this appropriately in one dimension is just wrong. sadly, I am having trouble thinking of an appropriate medium.

because I can't seem to think of anything, I will accept your bases. (I am now insecure... am I rely a nerd? )

If anything we can't go and upgrade oral sex. It's still in the same vague space, but if we do that then we'll have to update all sorts of other cultural references and such. Hmmm... The diagram is severely confused by the fact that the starting position (i.e. no sex/pre eye-contact) is the same point on the diagram as sex. Perhaps we could come up with some sort of clearer coordinate system here.
Polar Coordinates? Home can be (-Pi)/2 and sex is (3Pi)/2 unless it was rotated to make sense in polar, then it would just be 0 and 2Pi.
