So which mathematician appears if I repeat the words "Biggie Smalls"?

Not amused Randall.
My girlfriend Mary is on her perriod. Woman won't stop crying. I keep trying to keep her busy by ordering her to cook for me, but she just keeps getting fussy about it. And the game is on! EEEERRRrrrrgggg.

Not cool, not funny, not a good comic.

The comic was late because Randall didn't take Hofstadter's Law into account: "It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take Hofstadter's Law into account."

Douglas Hofstadter was one of my childhood heroes.

The others were the Power Rangers.

...Also, I've always thought this was one of the stupidest urban legends I've ever heard. Way to make fun of it, Randall.

Right, in America we say "Biggie Smalls" instead.

So where's the comic where The Ring gets recorded onto a DVD and played back on a PS2, light gun(s) in hand?

I live in an old dorm which is apparently haunted by 3 (?) ghosts, including a woman in a white dress and a man in a trench coat. Often, people here see creepy things in bathroom mirrors. While I didn't previously know about this legend/game/folktale (thank you, Randall), I now have one more reason to be creeped out at night in the bathroom.

Without claiming I believe or do not believe in the existence of anything supernatural, I do think if anything were to exist I wouldn't be able to see it anyway, as I'm sure my mind would be unable to handle such an event, and would subsequently ignore it.

I'm very much a fan of the alt-text.

Is it really more a British thing? I'd at least heard of this or seen it in movies by the time I was a teenager, I believe.

As Hofstadter's talk progresses, does it become progressively more and more simple-minded, until he's trying to explain recursion using the vocabulary from "Green Eggs and Ham"?

*was not a fan of I Am a Strange Loop, despite loving GEB*

Edit: I originally said "The Cat in the Hat," but "Green Eggs and Ham" has only 50 distinct words, compared to the 236 of "The Cat in the Hat."

We did it as kids in the 80s in Miami. Maybe it's just a generational gap. :)

Today is Friday the 13th.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

Haha. I worked at Universal Studios (Orlando) Halloween Horror Night, the theme was "Bloody Mary." This is perfect. BTW, it's Friday the 13th, in case anyone was wondering.

I'm hoping for a special tomorrow, 3/14 at 1:59

I'll tell you what I'd do if Somara came after me. I'd find that freaking well and stick the tv right in front of it. Then when she crawls out to get me, she falls right back into the well.
Then I'll take a picture of it and make it an internet meme.

Really? The reason I don't use the bathroom at night with the lights off is that I'd likely end up pissing on the floor if I did.

I remember doing this with my cousin when we were about 7, defiantly telling her that it wasn't real but being super nervous trying it out anyway.

The version I remember though is that you had to face to mirror head on and not side ways.

I remember this game! I was always too afraid to try it, as ridiculous as it seemed.

Our main bathroom growing up also had two mirrors. It was trippy.

The very existence of this sentence confuses me... either you went through those two books yourself and counted, in the ten minutes between that post and your edit (quite a feat)... or there's a page somewhere out there on the net that lists the number of unique words in each of Dr Seuss's books. Which... I know there's a lot of pointless information out there in the tubes, but still...

I thought this was common knowledge?

Dr. Seuss specifically wrote it with fifty words, because of something the publsher said. It had to be more accessible to younger kids, I believe.

ahhahaha... That brings back memories.

I honestly laughed out loud when I saw the comic, I'm sure Mary wasn't expecting that.

However, what would happen if Mary tossed her knife? wouldn't the girl in the middle be sliced to death x infinity?

I also has a bathroom set up like this.

One of the mirrors is one of those medicine cabinet style ones, so I can open it up and look at the back of my head in the reflection, which, oddly enough, you can't do if your bathroom is square with the mirrors mounted on the wall.

On a side note, I still cannot type quickly (at all, really) with this new mapping; curse you xkcd!
