Time traveling raptors?
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

I almost laughed at how little sense it makes to me.

But I didn't.

I wouldn't trust crossbows to stop raptors when guns are available.

Is it just supposed to be abstract, like he's constantly behind on the work, so people always have an advantage on him. Or is this is a Higgs Excitation joke?

I'm sure I'm missing something.

But I "get it" in so far is I'm not supposed to "get it", in that the POINT is "ha ha, this guy doesn't get it" to some very abstract, and quite possibly non-existent "it".

If "it" isn't so abstract or non-existent as I am forced to assume it is, then I didn't "get it", and likely never will.

I think xkcd can make jokes out of any combination of:

Raptors
Crossbows
Rick Astley
Any meme Randall deems funny
Vague physics things
Girls

And we're obligated to laugh!

I think it might a Half Life reference... maybe...
ie, what happened at Black Mesa might happen there.

Would certainly be good to have a crossbow if it does happen.

I took it as implying that the co-workers are all aware of some Half Life like scenario that's going to occur.

Maybe zombies?

Do said crossbows fire glowing hot steel rods? Otherwise you just aren't doing it right.

I don't think a crossbow can save you from a resonance cascade... don't you need something like an HEV suit as well?

It could also be a commentary on us, the readers. "Why is this comic funny?" "You don't get it?" "No, why is..." "You ARE a reader of XCKD right?"

We're slow on the uptake, because there is no uptake! Ahahaha.

Now, while I know I can't handle the math for figuring what kind of a physics scenario would require crossbows to survive the aftermath, I certainly could man-handle a physicist or two until they tell me. Their puny little arms can't load their medieval weaponry fast enough to stop me. Score one for military training!

Yeah, but this is REAL LIFE y'all. We can't just count on it starting small with a handful of easily-taken-down headcrabs and the occasional mawman. What if the bullsquid comes out first? Real life doesn't wait for you to level up.

Yea, that's what's leaving me unsure.

Perhaps just a more general "we really have no idea what's going to happen" personal defense strategy.

I think I'd keep a shotgun handy... just in case.

And a machete or two, because as we all know (or should, for the impending zombie war)... blades don't need reloading.

He's so slow he hasn't figured out what the crossbows have to do with the formula yet.

I mean everyone knows how they're related but hes just a little far behind.

Perhaps the consequence of Higgs excitement is that on Tuesday, something will appear that can only be dealt with by crossbow?

I actually do have two coworkers with crossbows. There are also a surprising number of holes in the wall in a nearby empty cube. It is wise to make noise before rounding corners there.

They are so far beyond him (and us) in understanding Higg's excitation that they know they need crossbows. He has no idea why. That's the joke.

Because he's the slowest one realizing that what they're working on could create a black hole or some sort of portal thingy, he doesn't yet see the need for a crossbow. Obviously the weapon of choice for fighting off interdimentional raptors...

For lab/office use?

At close quarters, you should prefer the relative maneuverability, shorter draw, and ability to fire around corners that a crossbow provides. For example, if you need to overturn a desk and take cover behind it, you can still load and fire most crossbows while not exposing yourself. An experienced worker knows this is critical in an any office based combat.

Now, if you bring the conflict outside, especially if you take a position on the roof, then the more rapid firing rate of the longbow makes more sense.

As to the effect of Higgs excitation's on the gravity of crossbow bolts vs. longbow arrows, i haven't done the math.

On April 7, 2008, Higgs predicted that the Higgs Boson will be found within a year. Time's up on Tuesday, the day which the particle physicists will reveal the Higgs "bow zone".

...I don't get it.

Ok, so from that last link, it sounds like it has something to do with a quantum particle passing through a field which is gaining temporary mass from the effects of the field and thus more momentum for the same speed of movement? It's going the same speed, but it can hit you harder. Doing as much damage as an arrow from a crossbow? The analogy doesn't seem to be direct enough.

Zombies is the cleanest fit for a crossbow and arcane experimentation. Guns attract more of them and close combat is needlessly risky/accomplishable with improvised or common gear. A crossbow would be a clear leg up in terms of surviving a zombie apocalypse. Likewise bolts are recoverable or craftable and replacement strings weigh far less than bullets. You lose out on rate of fire clearly but if you need it you're probably already in deep trouble.

Other possibility include vampires, 4 dimensional entities (for pinning them to objects), apple headed shamblers, and things capable of manipulating electromagnetic fields.

Raptors on the otherhand would be utterly foolish to take on with a crossbow. They move in packs. You gain no stealth benefit and the reload time would be almost inevitably fatal.
