I like today's comic though I think the implication that that is the only way to get happiness is a bit strange. Maybe if the list said "love" or something it would have been a bit less strange.

I kind of like the idea of a scavenger hunt list with happiness on it, because what if someone took it too seriously and the only way they could be happy was finishing the scavanger hunt? They would never get it done! Beautiful.

I like how she's rowing the boat. A bit of role reversal. Happiness is finding someone who wants to row the boat for you.

Well, when you think about it that way, life really is just one big scavenger hunt.

Treehouse = happiness, btw. Totally could have saved some major time there

Hrm, seems to be a recurring theme of xkcd that finding a significant other to spend the rest of your life with is the way to happiness.

Well, some of us had that drilled into our heads and now just feel that way. I'm guessing Randall and I share this characteristic.

I am overwhelmed by less than three.

Also, have we gone from "everybody competes to post the comic thread first" to "everybody assumes somebody else is on it and so just waits for the next person to post the thread"? Or are we just too lazy to start the threads? Evidence: No posts for 9 minutes, then in the 6 minutes after the thread is created, 8 posts.

Haha, awww...

I didn't quite get it at first, but reading it a second time made more sense somehow.

@GodShapedBullet: I think Happiness worked, though "True Happiness" or something similar may have worked just a /bit/ better.
@splin: Hm, didn't notice that at first, yeah, that is neat
@Kaijyuu: Oh yeah... Well, do you think that it's right?

Touché! (er, maybe not the best use of the term... But I agree!)

The Panel where he leaves is a bit sad, depending on how you assume the woman's tone is. I imagined it as a "Dear? Dear! Where are you going? Hello....?" Kinda thing. And you've got to wonder if the three just met up there, or if the other two were waiting around for the 3rd to get back XD

Do we know anything about Randal's dating life?
I hate to judge (not really) but he seems to be either extremely romantic or very lonely. Well, great comic either way.

Here's to completing your own scavenger hunt everyone!

I believe that is the implication tyen - a pretty awesome one at that. I kinda felt like it was a hostile thing at the end, he was just finding happiness to win the hunt - but he still found happiness. Now I've puzzled myself.

There's too much hand-holding for that to be true.

I doubt it; he seemed to be doing them in order (why not find a four-leaf clover before spending 50 years looking for happiness?).

Where did he get the hat?

Maybe happiness came with the hat.

Also, why couldn't he look for those other things while he was aging, and couldn't he see them on the list? I'm confused.

On a list with those items, I would expect the next item to be either an arrowhead or an uncomfortable-truth well.

Other possibilities:
  • musket ball
  • possum skull
  • world peace
  • cat's eye marble
  • sand dollar
  • an honest man - wait, what?
  • a piece of fool's gold or a lodestone
  • a fossil
What would y'all add?

I do not understand the people who respond to this with "awww." It makes me nauseously sad.

To the "love != happiness" commenters, I think it was necessary for this comic. Pretty much nothing he could have been doing for the first 5 panels would have made the rest of the comic as jarring as falling in love with another person. And it's punchier for panel 6 to show him walking away from her than it would have been to have him walking away from his NSF funded research lab or his philanthropic organization or something.

The meaning of life, and of death.

I think his leaving mid-strip is a metaphor for his death - my life with my husband was just like this, till he "left" by dying a few months ago. And we aren't really old, although we do have a few wrinkles (well, I do - he doesn't, any more), and had far too short of a time together. And I ask him hourly "where are you"?, just as she asks him "where are you [--]?" Uncanny.

And now, he's found happiness. And is moving on, and away, from what has been, from what was, to an unknown future, beyond happiness -- "what's next?" Uncanny.

Thank you, Randall.

What evil bastard puts something like 'happiness' and a scavenger hunt list? The other items appeared rather simple to obtain by comparison.

Interesting how they chose to only follow the scavenger list in the exact order. Shark teeth are easy to locate; his two mates could have searched for one of them while waiting for him to reach 'happiness' and probably have the time left over to genetically engineer some four-leaf clover.
