Not bad... I have had this sequence occur to me

"Overstimulated" Discussion

I actually read all the party text... but I get this all the time.

I require an explanation of the entire comic from one of echochamber's higher intelligences.

I am definitely buying a print of this. Can we get it in a bigger size? Because I'm pretty sure a lot of the fanbase feels exactly like this all the goddamn time.

Agreed. It's quite easy to get overwhelmed in a large, talkative group.

The other post was created first, albeit without alt-text and proper title. Still, all posts should be resubmitted there (or moved by a mod).

i think hes just trying to test for convergence of a depleted harmonic series.

my math zone is trying to come up with an elegant way to find area under a curve by using circles instead of rectangles or trapezoids.

hes taking all of the prime numbers and making rectangles with width Pi and height 1/Pi, and then trying to figure out whether the height of all of those rectangles stacked on top of each other is infinity or if it converges.

Interesting problem, i would guess that it does converge, but i couldn't say at what.

It's pretty liberating when you learn that you don't have to go to parties filled with people you don't care to talk about.

Then you don't even need to go all Neo and see the hidden numbers to relax. Though I guess if that's what works for you, go for it.

This is completely what I do at parties. Bitch about people, I mean, not the math thing. I certainly don't do the math thing in my head, it happens out loud.

Comic implies that:
[math]\lim_{n \to \infty}\sum_{i=0}^n\frac{1}{P_i}=\infty[/math]
where [imath]P_i[/imath] is a function that generates prime numbers.

Seems straight forward to me as:

[math]\lim_{n \to \infty}\sum_{i\geq1}^n\frac{1}{i}=\infty[/math]
is also true.

This won't work. It's true (and not hard to prove) that the harmonic series of natural numbers diverges (your second formula). However, this doesn't necessarily imply that the harmonic series of any subset of the natural numbers diverges. For instance, [math]\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{1}{n^2}[/math] converges. You have to work harder to show that the harmonic series of primes diverges.

Edit: Sigh... summand and index did not match.

I tend to do that a lot. Many times when I'm overstimulated, I will literally just close my eyes, slow my breathing, and fall half- asleep. Sometimes it's intention; I get a lot of ideas during those times. A lot of times it's not intentional - I'll simply fall asleep for 30 seconds or a minute out of nowhere, but only in a crowd of people - fortunately, not when i'm driving. I accidentally scared my girlfriend's family doing that once...

I do EXACTLY this when in groups of four people or more. Except for me it's mentally reciting "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" or something, instead of math. When I forget lines, I just invent my own to fill in the gaps :)

Why yes, I AM one of those people who could entertain themselves for hours even when locked in an empty room, how did you guess?

Also this comic reminded me really strongly of this article: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200303/rauch

I don't speak math and what I understood was that the guy is bored with the mind-numbing chatter and does something else, something he likes, in his head.
I do that all the time.

I did this when I was younger and a little more socially maladjusted. Then I got to college and went to parties populated mostly by other engineers, so while there was some attempt not to devolve into a math class, there were plenty of random discussions of set theory, design patterns, and lisp between games of beer pong and king's cup.

Later on, I started throwing my own parties and it got even better- I invited people I liked, which rarely included 'snipey' people, and included a lot of people willing to discuss zombie-raptor preparedness at the drop of a hat. :)

There's not really a joke here at all, just a strip about a nerd who is out of his element. The alt text basically describes what this comic is about. It seems to be an unfortunate habit of humans everywhere to "talk judgementally about people who aren't there." Really not fun for anyone caught in the middle who has nothing against those being talked about and may not even know them.

And I'm not going to go on a rant here, but suffice to say it happens far too often in my life.
And apparently I'm not interesting enough for people to talk about me behind my back. I'm not sure how to feel about that.

The guy is overwhelmed by the prattling conversation and goes to his happy place, which is math. Then somebody snaps him out of it and tells him that he needs to get away from all that math more often.
