I laughed at this one, although it was pretty hard not to see coming.

I think imagining this as Biden is funnier. Failing all else, he's the driver?

I loved this one too actually. The car must be awfully unstable and bumpy to drive though, those wheels mess everything up.

Am I the only one who thinks we now need, per strip, a thread for the actual comic, plus a meta-thread for all the wrangling that goes on for who get's first post? Although, of course, who would post the meta-thread first? We'd need a meta-meta-thread to discuss---Aaaaaaaah infinite loop.

* Puts infinite loop in collection *

Anyway, I tip my hat to the two of you, Zorlin and Glanst; your polite and humorous competition is a welcome change from much of the world wide wib.

Oh... and I enjoyed the comic too! ;)

The alt text rings especially true for me; my first (and so far, only--thanks Administration) semester of grad school I was drunk more than half the time.

The President of the United States may not be sent to jail while in office. As soon as you impeach/let him get out of office, he's free game.

It's probably just the drunk tank. They're in there to cool before being released without being charged.

Funny strip, btw. For some reason, I love the idea of Obama cutting loose. For example, when he signed that bill to make Tobacco FDA-controlled, I really, really, really wanted him to light one up on the Rose Garden Lawn.

the actual chemical alcohol in different beverages may have the same effect, but the beverages themselves can be different, since they aren't just pure alcohol or even just alcohol and water.

For example no matter how much I love it, I can't drink spiced rum. It affects me in crazy ways.

Depends on the drink and the person.

So yeah, apart from the slight inaccuracy of the alt text, awesome comic!

I'm so surprised that people on here did not get what it was referring to straight away thoguh.

Being new to the forum I'm not sure I understand the significance of being first to start the thread, but zorlin, I noticed that you linked to comic number 607 (the unix 2038 comic), rather than 617. The image links to 607 too. What's that all about? Am I missing some other significance or was that just a mistake?

Is it just coincidence in the comic #, or is this a shout out to the 617 area code where the events leading up to this took place?

I found the comic simple but funny and still retains the xkcd feel even if it does't have maths in it.

I'm pretty sure you mean title text. From the comic page:

Code: Select all

<img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/understocked.png" title="My biology grad student friends tell me that different types of alcohol don't actually have different effects. I trust their expertise, not because of the 'biology' part, but because of the 'grad student'." alt="Understocked" />

This comic is stupid in just the first panel, because it makes it seem as if both the police officer and the professor were yelling. Only the professor lost his temper and yelled, the policeman was just doing his job. Honestly, the professor and Obama need to apologize for what they said about the officer who was just doing his civic duty.

From the title string:

My biology grad student friends tell me that different types of alcohol don't actually have different effects. I trust their expertise, not because of the 'biology' part, but because of the 'grad student'.

This, frankly, will not fly.

Clearly these grade students can't afford the real thing and think that Mike's Hard Lemonade is filled with some kind of liqueur. It's a "malt beverage", which means it's beer. Same for anything you can get out of the cooler in most stores. It's all beer pretending to be something else... because it can reach a larger audience and have less regulation by being a malt beverage rather than actually have, say, vodka or whiskey in it.

And don't even get me started on things like Sake (which makes me throw up no matter how good it is... and I've had the $100 a bottle kind with the gold flakes in it) or aged brandy or just plain wine for that matter. (Did I mention wine coolers are malt beverages too?)

You need better grad students. Or you can just visit me for a weekend... once.

stumbling home drunk at 3am and then upon my arrival home, checking the xkcd site made me happy... not because it made reference to irrelevant american politic blah blah whatever (dont live in america or even close) ... but because it talked about boozieness... i am a simple drunk and this comic made my night/morning... i do now wish i had wasted my entire paycheck on tequila instead of rum because now i just feel sleepy.... i'm sorry, im drunk and ceased to make sense about 5 hours ago

Blame Internet Explorer. It used to treat the alt attribute as the title text, in spite of what the standards specify.

The "aw..." would've broken the unity/reference back to the 2nd panel. If Gates had said "aw..." in the second panel, then it would've been appropriate in the last one.

I'm actually really surprised by the forums. Considering the reaction to the "Windows 7" comic, I expected everyone would be debating about the Professor Gates + Officer Crowley story. I guess we have such a perfect consensus on it that no one needs to debate?

There's nothing to debate, unless we go off-topic (on the Internet? No one ever goes off-topic on the Internet. Except Hitler). This is a comic about the "getting together for a beer" event, not the precipitating event, with a comic extrapolation. I guess there could be an on-topic debate about the effectiveness of a beer party, but frankly, who has the energy?

Hooray Internet!

http://www.ontheissues.org/askme/arrest.htm

A viewer asked this question on 6/23/2000:

Who has the authority to arrest the President of the United States?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

budgetanalyst gave this response on 6/24/2000 [ChrTh note: all references to current President are for Bill Clinton]:

The President is not exempt from the law, so he can be legally arrested for the same reasons as any other person in the United States. (The Supreme Court so found in relation to the recent unpleasantness related to the current President's affairs. The President's lawyers argued that he could not be made to testify on a lawsuit while he was President. The Supreme Court decreed otherwise, stating that the President was not exempted from the laws that applied to all citizens.)

The practicalities involved may be something else. The President is protected by the Secret Service, and it is not likely that any law officer will be allowed to simply walk up to the President and place him under arrest. If it ever came to arresting the President, it would be a very delicate situation. In my opinion, the matter would be legally dragged out so that any actual arrest (if justified) would take place after the President leaves office, either after the end of the term, resignation, or removal from office as a result of impeachment actions.

One thing that may be somewhat confusing is that the Constitution protects members of Congress (Representatives and Senators) from arrest while they are on their way to Congress or while performing their duties. In the Washington, D.C., area this privilege sometimes comes into play - a Senator has refused to abide by the HOV rules while he drives to the Capitol, and there is nothing that the police can do about it; Senator Byrd of W. Va. recently waived his immunity in this regard when he hit another vehicle from behind.

I don't feel too bad making a serious business post because this comic was so serious business itself. I think it broke the mold in terms of being about a bunch of current events-- the others are (as far as I remember) pretty timeless.

As far as I can remember, the alt text is supposed to be an 'alternative text' for when the image doesn't load, and 'alt' was the html tag. Title text, however, I had never heard of until now.

If so, it doesn't work like that. Ostensibly, the queue is ordered by severity of illness.

However, whenever a politician gets something like appendicitis, they seem to get treatment within 3 hours.

Where the queue system breaks down is the wait-list for diagnostic treatments. If a serious illness is suspected, but not confirmed, you can be on the list for months.

It really wouldn't have been a big story, except that Obama commented on it without knowing the details first, and assumed that the white cop was prejudiced against the black professor, so now the conservative sectors of the media are labeling him as a racist, and the liberal sectors are trying to say that this case proves that racial profiling is everywhere. Finding real facts about the issue are tough, but you've got a lot of people throwing around their assumptions (based on personal bias.) Race relations are a REALLY touche subject in the states and when the President weighs in on something like this, it quickly goes from local story to high profile national coverage. I'm not saying that it should (Our media feeds on sensationalism) but Obama really should have known better than to wade into this s**t-storm so nonchalantly.
