0629: "Skins"

Postby KestralTweet » Fri Aug 28, 2009 4:01 am UTC

Image
Alt-Text: There's Livejournal drama between those who want to wear human suits over fursuits and those who just take off the fursuits.

Commentary:
I found it funny. Edit: Sorry for the non-indepth commentary! Sorry.

I thought Randall really did a so-so job in making the strip, I really don't want to put him down saying negative things about him, nor do I really want to call him a genius at the moment. The comic gave me a good laugh, and I liked the last panel. But it isn't 'Save on my Hard Disk' material.

Err. Fix link.

And Furries creep me out to no end. Meaning the comic kinda makes me want to hide under my bed...

For some reason, I was actually expecting people dressed up as animals dressed up as people after the set-up, but that must've been because I forgot this is xkcd and would be rather difficult to show in stickman form. I was quite tickled by the alt-text, though.

I find it humorous that I just went to xkcd, saw no new comic, then browsed around in the "psychic" discussion for about 15 minutes and returned to the individual comic threads subforum only to see a discussion page with several replies for a comic that wasn't there fifteen minutes ago.
Man, these fora are active.

You managed to hit the most active five minutes, sure enough.

In case anyone was wondering, this is the thread with the earlier thread number. (And the correct formatting, although "I found it funny" doesn't actually contribute anything or even prove that the 1st! poster had read the comic.)

So.. a Skins convention is basically a business exhibit?

I'm confused, disappointed, and wanting to see that guy take off those glasses at the same time.

The alt-text saved this one, I feel. But Randall can't be brilliant *every* single time.

OP: some more profound commentary would be good

I was so busy browsing the forum games section, that I forgot about the new comic!

I completely agree with joee on this one.

Well taking off the suits would be wrong... then you'd just be an ordinary human. But two suits at once would probably mean roasting alive at any con I've ever been to... hmmmmmm....

Clearly, human-furry conventions must be held in the extreme north/south parts of the world to make up for the thickness of the clothing involved.

I liked this one. It had a level of quirkiness found in the earlier comics, something the recent comic threads have been pining for.

Observation #1: There are furries who read XKCD.

Observation #2: Furries like to parody things, including themselves, and especially including things that parody them.

Prediction based on Observations #1 and #2: It's only a matter of time before I see convention photos of furries in full fursuits with human masks on or something, in direct reference to this.

Observation #1: correct, including myself

Observation #2: Everyone like to parody things, including themselves, and especially including things that parody them.

Prediction based on Observations #1 and #2: There is generally some sort of references that people will make, to things they enjoy, especially if it already targets themselves.

Observation #3: Randall is a furry, but doesn't want to admit it. Plans on admitting it after he makes enough furry comics to soften the blow to his reputation. Also Black hat guy will wear cat ears sometime in the future.

I'm not going to lie, this comic makes me angry. Nothing to do with the joke itself, I liked it quite a bit actually. Just because of the way this forum will treat the subject of furries. I'm not mad at Randall, I'm mad at you guys because of what you're going to turn this thread into, the same flamefest most other forums devolve into whenever furries are mentioned.

In other words, in before unprovoked anti-furry circle jerk.

We don't like to talk about the 'skins' much - mostly because of the perverted sex acts they get up to in hotel rooms. (And the porn!)

For those wishing to attend a real furry convention, there's probably one near you.

Yeah... people enamored with the concept of a hidden animal identity while exhibiting an outwardly human appearance.
Exhibiting a staid mundane exterior amid the panoramic insanity of a myriad of furries...

You know what you call those people when you encounter them at a furry convention.

Hey Randall, thanks for the shout-out to all us fans of Eric Garcia's Anonymous Rex series, and the blatantly noncanon fanfics starring sabertooth tigresses.

Dinosaurs, walking around in this day and age? You must be kidding. Those aren't scales, they're lupus. Yeah...

To the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing as a "skinny fandom."

However, we furries are a rather unstable lot....

Only in the fantasies of self-referential artists and writers. We do have an article on skins, but it's about a different meaning of the term.

Was exactly the thing I was thinking, before I realized that the desert would do quite well as well, as the suits would keep out the heat (like with normal desert clothing).

This comic was a "meh". It has that desperate feel of "Oh-crap-it's-a-quarter-to-twelve-and-I-still-haven't-made-a-comic." But better and brighter have said it before me, Randall can't be brilliant *every* time.
hi joee?

I have nothing against Furries, just like I have nothing against any other strange thing people do, as long as they keep it to themselves.

Having said that, I think putting cat ears on Black Hat Guy would result in an untimely demise of the universe.

Being staff at a furry convention is a surreal experience, especially when fursuiters come in looking for lost-and-found.
