Haha funny Randall, both the site and the comic.

Edit: Ya had to beat me on the thread on this oh so.... odd... comic and homepage...

Edit2: The     Isn't part of the alt text, it's part of the bad web design.

So she called him to manipulate him into disrupting her friend's wireless signal with the toaster oven so she could kill her in a game. Brilliant!

On a side note, why is the home page satiring every poorly designed webpage ever?

"GeoCities is shutting down today. To commemorate this, xkcd.com has been redesigned."

In case like me, you can't see all of this at the top thanks to (intentionally) badly designed Geocities-like HTML.

Comic was meh but ++++ on hilariously bad Geocities memories.

Goodbye, Geocities...with the constant construction of the epilepsy-inducing sloppy code. The hitcounter is kinda low, though. 36 hits in over 5 minutes? It's probably just a static image.

Edit (addition): I used to use wifi to game, and whenever the (landline) telephone in the room would ring, I would get disconnected. Which sucked, fairly hard, since one of the nifty things 'bout non-dial up, "high speed" is you're supposed to be beyond phone-line disruptions.

Why the website looks like it is:

Scrolling marquee wrote:GeoCities is shutting down today. To commemorate this, xkcd.com has been redesigned.

I find the web design hilarious and nostalgic.

PS. ARGH, ninja'd! But I agree with the above.

That "redesign" of xkcd was so distracting I had to come here to actually read the new comic. I think I'll go make some nachos now. (After all, I have the ingredients.)

The end of Geocities is depressing. I remember when I was 10 or 11 and I would make my first websites after school on that site.

Where will kids get free hosting now? :(

(Also the comic is killer. :)

Hurts my eyes, but very well done. The comic is funny, too.

The web design is like what he already used here: http://hammerandsteele.com/?u=http://xk ... sonal/gop/ (In addition to being 1998-style). Its a nice touch how he actually uses TABLEs and FONT tags. Most of the imitation bad sites I see are in XHTML with CSS. This get authenticity points. Also notice line 1 of the html: "<HTML WEB="2.0">

I also had number 36.

So either it's a static image, or you and I are the same person.

I wouldn't have even checked the comic page if people hadn't mentioned it. Motherlove, that is funny. I swear I've visited at least a dozen sites that looked exactly like that, broken image tags and stray code and all, somewhere in the last dozen or more years I've been webbing. Heh.

Comic was hilarious, but upstaged by the site itself. Nostalgia will cause me to miss Geocities immensely...yet the memories of actually using Geocities sites make me want to rejoice. Such a dilemma. Either way, the site captured the Geocities horror perfectly.

Incidentally, I too was number 36. I think it's a static to satirize the fact that nobody ever actually visits those sites. Otherwise, being xkcd, the counter would leap up to several hundred within a minute of midnight. :/

Otherwise, I found the cheese almost burned, I was too distracted by the layout...

Mmmmm. Would you like some nachos with that burnt cheese?

Ah GeoCities, now officially the Neanderthal of the early internet. Computers may not have an F=ma, but natural selection rears its ugly head from time to time. Sort of. Not really. Okay time for this metaphor to die as well.

Anyway, I think if you're gaming on Wi-Fi a microwave is a fairly insignificant threat compared to the other predators out there. Dammit I haven't even taken so much as a biology course in three years! What's wrong with me?

Heh, reminds me of William Corliss' site. Worst design ever. Most fascinating content ever.

Maybe Randall's next comic came be about how demons/aliens/time-travelers use crap websites to hide their secrets from us mere mortals.

I completely forgot to read the comic because of the homepage. I should go do that now.

Edit: Also, did anyone else think of http://xkcd.com/140/ when they were reading this?

Also, I love the source code. I've never heard of ESPA☃ISH before.

Hi joee!

I didn't realise today was D-Day ;_;
R.I.P. Geocities. I will never forget your sparkly gifs and midi files.

I didn't realise magical nuking machines interrupted wireless. I only thought it was bluetooth-remote controlled surround sound systems. We had that issue once, but it's ok, because the PCs were LAN connected, and the Macs were having the issue.

edit: his hitcoutner is off by about 1000 page views. What a shit sitecounter service he's on.

Randall, you should be ashamed of yourself. I guess that's what you have to do, though, to get the full GeoCities "experience".

The drawings seem to be getting more detailed. Or maybe the people are just unusually big, and I've been shading things with a black sharpie for the past half hour or so.

mmm nachos.

VERY Coincidentally, I was talking to my bro about the geocities style making a come back earlier today before reading this. He was jokingly making an argument for it. First time I even mentioned geocities for years.
Nice to see that the style is true to the original. The html is a funny read too.

Oh sheesh. You know, I think its been long enough now that you can look back on things like the "Under Construction" banners and ask "What the fuck were we thinking?" I mean really, they don't make much sense. I mean. I know what they were for and what the thinking was. But its as if they expected to finish creating the web or something. If there was anything that was a fad about the Internet it was stuff like that.

One thing Randall forgot is the little translucent G that floats at the bottom right of the page.
