Are you happy now? You produced a comic so awesome that I've paid for international shipping. I'm also getting some t-shirts.

I looked and looked and did not find Qwghlm.

Which doesn't surprise me, as I only know that as a fictional place from Neal Stephenson's book, not an online community...

Shouldn't The chain of islands be WikiMedia? With Wikipedia as the biggest?

That's a very minor nitpick though. I absolutely need this as a poster. This is great.

I love how USENET has fallen into The Sea like Atlantis.

That's because there are no porn communities(unless you count 4chan)

The poster for this comic absolutely requires the presence of the alt-text. Or if it's not on the poster, then it definitely needs to be on a T-shirt along with some smaller version of the map.

I know that others have complained about this already -- but here are some numbers to think about.

Gaia Online gets ~1 million posts per day, has ~7 million members
SA gets ~60k posts per day, has ~100k members
IGN boards get ~60k posts per day, have ~1 million members
LJ gets ~200k posts per day, has ~12 million members

Now, 2channel gets 2.7 million posts per day. What does that suggest about the size of its userbase? What does its influence on Japanese public opinion suggest about the ratio of 2channel users to Japan's population of 127 million?

I find the size of the 2channel island completely impossible to justify.

I agree. I was just disputing the 'G' rating, which it isn't; at least PG.

What happened to the word filter there? Hmm... "Saladin's Mom" *previews*. It still works for me. How come it didn't work when you said it?

Magic.

Actually, that 'і' in 'Norrіs' isn't an 'i'. It's a "Cyrillic Small Letter Byelourssian-Ukrainian I" according to the Windows character map, Unicode 0456. ('i' is 69.)

You can convince yourself of this if you have Firefox 2 if you reply to this, look to see that my 'Norrіs' is misspelled, but if you type 'Norris' (or you look at this one) it won't be.

There are a lot of letters that have alternates in the Unicode character set that you can use to bypass filters. For instance, "Latin Small Letter F With Hook", Unicode 0131, can be used to type Æ’uck, which will get you around the mechanical filters at at least one site, though not the mods if they see it.

You may only use this knowledge for good. ;-)

What, no Kingdom of Loathing? We have a million+ members (though only about 200,000 of those are active at any given time). I think we might be bigger than Everquest or UO -- and more popular than Jesus, too. Or maybe not.

Nah, I keed. Great great comic, and I'd love a poster of it, too.

Speaking from a purely artistic point of view, that's just a cool looking map. Personally, Tolkien-style triangle mountains aren't my thing, but they look good in the style you're using. The color is just perfect.

Yay for the poster pre-order! *runs off to get one*

Favorite part: "The Bay of Angst" and "Your Base" :D

While waiting for the poster, my roomate went through and made an SVG version of the map. Its still beta quality (I'm missing the names of the smallest islands, no land shading, I'm not sure the fonts are portable, etc) but it's not too bad. Avalable here :)
