0685: "G-Spot"

Alt text: The BBC lead was 'The elusive erogenous zone said to exist in some women may be a myth, say researchers who have hunted for it.' I couldn't read it with a straight face.

I wonder what the research notes would be like.
"Day one: Search begins.
...
Day thirty-seven: Search unsuccessful. Too difficult. Need new subjects."

I read this comic right after the article Cracked top picks lead me to about the same thing. Coincidence? I think not.

Pfft any guy who can't find the G Spot isn't trying hard enough.

Or at least that's what my girlfriend keeps telling me :(

Excuse me, but exactly how hard can it be for serious scientists to determine once and for all if it exists or not?

With regards the alt text - definitely a 'Randall, get out of my head' moment. Fairly certain the journalist responsible was giggling as they wrote it.

They violated examined 1800 women to find out.

1) Find a statistically significant number of women who are willing to attempt to have orgasms while scientists stick cameras and vibrators way, way up into their privates.

Alternately:
1) Find a statistically significant number of sexually active women who are willing to have their innards removed and dissected for science.

That's the first step...

Edit: if this is referring to the study I think it is, they didn't actually violate study anyone. They asked 1800 women to fill out a survey, instead. Somewhat less scientifically compelling, but it avoids the difficulties inherent in 1) and 1) above.

I wonder if this has anything to do with being a British study?

Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

The question of how to correctly perform such a search is a good one...
Caveat emptor.

I have a reason. It is... just not valid...

"It is rather irresponsible to claim the existence of an entity that has never been proven and pressurise women and men too."

*cough* weapons of mass destruction in Iraq *cough*

Not meaning to bring anything political into this, but that quote from the article could be used in so many more serious ways than talking about a G-spot.

The G-spot is a myth? Does this mean we'll see this handled in a future episode of Mythbusters?

I don't see why female scientists would be much better than male scientists at doing a twin study.

Pretty damn hard. First, you have to find women who are definitely capable of orgasm. Then you have to narrow it down to women who are capable of having vaginal orgasms. Then you have to narrow it down further to women who claim to feel an intense sensation during stimulation of the front vaginal wall. And then you can study them, after weighing all the factors that can prevent women from orgasming, which are incredibly numerous. Also, some women find G-spot stimulation to be painful instead of pleasurable.

So really, the sample size to study would have to consist primarily of women who regularly reach vaginal orgasm primarily through the stimulation of the front vaginal wall. Good luck finding enough for a study.

Yes, I'm sure the mythbusters will handle the g-spot. Maybe they are doing that right now. Handling g-spots. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie, in his zillion of jobs before being a mythbuster, had a go at professional g-spot handling.

I'm so sorry.

Good news for the Kari-stalkers?

Also, I think either the research or the BBC article was a joke. Probably the former.

If you read the BBC article linked to above, you find that British scientists are unable to find the G-spot. However the Italian scientists claim that they have found it  That kind of figures

From Adam's Twitter:
Adam Savage wrote:please stop asking me to test the g-spot myth. That's a creepy adult show I'll host when I'm 80. Not until then.

A good analysis of why this study may be crap:

Questionnaires are always a bit subjective and iffy - especially when asking someone about their anatomy. If you ask people how many chambers their heart has, and some say 3, that doesn't mean they're actually missing a chamber. Simply asking people if they have a G-spot doesn't confirm it's existence or lack thereof. I can't believe that this study would rely on opinion rather than medically examining females to see if it is there or not.

The fact that they didn't see any correlation in identical twins just illustrates that personal opinion about the existence of a G-spot is not genetically determined. Their initial logic that genetically identical twins should have identical sexual responses is flawed.

British scientists are probably too busy dealing with (or stuck in) Britain's "extreme weather conditions". Check out the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/

By the way, "extreme weather conditions" is what the rest of the world calls snow.

Creasing at that, bloody funny.
With regards the extreme weather in the UK, it's only regarded as extreme by the pussies running the transport services, unfortunately without gritted roads cars skid, if there's a snowflake on the tracks trains stop and without being able to travel everything grinds to a halt.

word.

I wonder if there was a "fear of censure" bias in this study? I seem to recall that the average # of sexual partners reported by females went Up (to approx that reported by males) when the study was designed and delivered in a way that the study participiants were guaranteed anonymity. I wonder if the British women were embarrased to talk about it? Or perhaps they've just had such Horrible sex ed, that they have no idea what it is or where it might be found?

From anectdotal evidence, the G spot can be found only after a woman has become well aroused via other means, there is no magic On button for orgasm (at least not in the pelvic region of most women), it's much more like a keyboard, to do most of the useful things, you have to hit a number of keys in a way that works with that particular program. Which makes it more of an art than a science, there are just too many variables involved.

I was impressed at the expressiveness of the final stick figure. Being able to convey the regretful embarrassment with just the right angle of a circle on a line is damn fine minimalist cartooning!

It's the sort of thing that great puppeteers like Phillipe Genty are able to do with simple figures, or even just a cloth draped over a hand.

They should try using something like tickling as a control. See if a pair of identical twins would have the same tendencies to be ticklish, AND in the same spots. That's assuming that people were filling out their surveys honestly of course.
