I wonder if anyone counted how many bullets were fired during Saving Private Ryan...

Have you seen how the other threads start? You need the image of the comic (which should itself be a link to the comic page) and the tooltip written at the bottom. Then you get to say "Have At :) ".

I think Vegeta did. However, he used external technology, so it's not really fair.

This is weird. I was just reading a couple hours ago about often misquoted lines, and the "Well, do ya?" line was included.

Yes, but if they fire a continuous (if short-lived) beam rather than individual slugs, one can't actually count shots, per se.

"Dirty Harry" discussion

Postby FarmTurtle » Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:26 am UTC

Now something that my dad always said that I wonder about is that Dirty Harry's revolver only had five shots. He claimed that he owned one, and because the caliber was so big they couldn't fit as many chambers on the same size, uh, rotate-y bit. It makes sense, but I've never heard anyone else confirm nor deny it.

I was amused. More by the title text than the comic. And I've never seen either of these movies. But I'm aware enough of them.

You need to read it again after getting the punchline, with Dustin Hoffman's voice. "Six, definitely six."

Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

Anyone care to help the underprivileged who have seen neither movie appreciate this comic's humor?

Rain Man (Casino Scene): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW1qHA5Hqwc
Dirty Harry (Do you feel lucky?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOxGL5G8Pbk

That should explain the joke to those who haven't seen either movie.

Edit: I count shots in movies for the record. The thirty-six shot handgun clip never fails to annoy me.

I think it's a testament to how good these movies must be that I haven't seen either yet I get the joke. I think it's a pretty funny comic. It's nice to be in the loop, for once (Actually, the last five made sense to me, but the three before that I had to do some research on before I got the joke).

You would think so, but then again, you're less likely to know what the capacity is, whilst the magazine sizes of common "conventional" guns are more widely known.

Especially revolvers, as they're almost all six shots, regardless of make.

People who confuse the term "clip" for when they meant to say "magazine" annoys me.

Well, no, actually I don't give a shit :D. But I know a few gun owners who get pissed about that sort of thing.

I think by "clip" he meant "excerpt", like a movie clip. I'm about to google the difference between a clip and a magazine, cause I know I've heard that there's a difference. Probably from /k/

1. I count shots fired and the like always, ruining movies for all when I comment upon such things.

B. This is what makes the end of Army of Darkness so amazingly good.

iii. At first I was like, Hare are there only 17 replies by 10 in the morning, but then I realized I'm in Germany, which is not usually the case.

I saw "Rain Man" again a couple of months ago, having had a bit of an 80's movie binge (48 Hours / Tootsie / Thelma & Louise, amongst others). Of all the movies we watched, Rain Man had stood up to the test of time the best by a very very long way. Except the soundtrack, which is a bit jarring in its jangly synth pop.

I recall it came in for some controvery, though, for the misconception it generated that autism and savantism were frequently linked.

Out of interest, does anyone know whether they're meant to be firing bullets or beams in Firefly? That always bothered me.

That... is open to interpretation. The one "true" laser pistol fires a red beam, unlike any other handheld weapon. That seems to suggest everything else is actual lead (though it doesn't explain the sound when fired).

Maybe future bullets have whiz-bang sound effects?

They fire metal slugs. See Vera in "Our Mrs. Reynolds", or any gunfight scene when you hear bullets hit metal. They just probably use a different propellant other than gun powder, which is how I account for the "pew pew pew" noise they make.
The only working laser you ever see is that one from "Heart of Gold."
