0698: "You Hang Up First"

Postby WhiskerTips » Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:05 am UTC

title-text: No, YOU stumble past a series of post-breakup hookups in a daze as you slowly realize what you've lost and how unlikely you are ever to get it back first.

Pretty funny, although I never really understood why people have a huge thing about hanging up first. I always love the escalating shouts though, fun stuff.

Also, seems like pretty poor grammar in the title text to me.

Happened to be on the phone with my girlfriend when this was posted. I told her about it, but she had not yet read it, so I said exactly what the guy said, and she said nearly exactly what the girl said. It was awesome.

Taking this little game to the extreme, eh?

And that hover text is SO typical Randall, love it.

Starts off funny, then gets slightly depressing, then funny again!

The sad thing is, people actually argue over that... though probably not to this extreme.

Get out of my head for a third time this week, I was discussing hanging up first thing today! Either way I seem to not need to worry about it these days if I'm on the phone for a lengthy enough period of time, I get a text or twitter message. On the iPhone they need to be closed .. before you can hang up.

I agree, this is a phenomenon I've seen.

I've also seen a lot of 'You hang up first' jokes.

I KNEW there was a reason I've always followed the "you hang up first" with "sure, bye, see you tommorow".

Besides that the silliness of the entire situation has always annoyed me quite a bit.

Is it me, or wasnt there another XKCD where she says "no you hang up" and he goes "ok" and just hangs up. And shes all flustered and calls back and asks why he hung up?

Where was that from?

Back in my day it was:
"You put out the smoke signal first."
"No you."
"No you."
"Oops, just burned down the village."

Surely the XKCD thing to do is to hack the cell tower so that neither of them has to hang up.

I suppose one has to read it like this:

No, YOU
<stumble past a series of post-breakup hookups in a daze as you slowly realize what you've lost and how unlikely you are ever to get it back>
first.

The desperate part is when the series has zero members.

No, I'm pretty sure the title text is correct, grammatically speaking. He even avoided splitting the infinitive at the end of the awkwardly-long imperative clause!

Hmmm. Once I came across this dilemma with an ex, and we decided to set up the "Whoever made the call is responsible for hanging up" protocol. Worked well, and seems a pretty neat solution.

Do kids still call each other for their romantic chats? Back in the 90's (the olden days): yeah, I called my girlfriend, but we didn't have skype or IM or texting or whatever.

Just one, fixed point landline in my parent's house, standing in the hallway, hoping that your siblings weren't listening in from the top of the stairs to mock you afterwards for being gooey.

It's a Hermann Grid.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

Me and my boyfriend are on different continents. So I suppose we have a 'goodnight' situation instead on MSN. It goes approximately like this:

Me: "Goodnight, I mean have a good day"
He: "Thanks I'll try. Sleep well, sweetie."
Me: "Sleep well, uh I mean, when you go to bed sleep well."
He: "See you in the evening, I mean morning for you."
Me: "Sure see ya, if I actually wake up before noon for once."
He: "I won't be awake anymore at that time."
Me: "I know. I'll set an alarm, but you know that just means I'll shout at the alarm clock at 7 am and go back to bed."
He: "Yeah, I know. See ya sometime."
Me: "I'll try to be online again in the evening tomorrow."
He: "I'll try to be awake."

etc... ad infinitum.

Which basically means we're both awake at strange hours trying to catch each other online. Sleep rhythm is what happens to other people. Nine blasted timezones and he's in bloody Arizona, where they don't know Daylight Saving Time exists until I tell them. Last summer he asked me 'do you still have that daylight savings thing?' about every time we discussed hours and clocks. We're learning though - nowadays the evening routine is more like:

"Goodnight *kiss*"
"Goodnight *kiss*"

With plenty of variations I won't go into details about. And it's goodnight for both if it's night here OR there. Much simpler.

No, the 'you hang up first' argument has never happened to me, but I do have a lot of friends and family members whom I annoy by hanging up as soon as I can get them to say 'bye'. Talkative people. I mean, I'm talkative too, I'm Karelian, which is loads cooler than being Corellian as far as storyline is concerned, but somehow I seem to be surrounded by people who let me have a word in edgewise only if the edge is sharp or the word is 'yeah'. And then by people who don't pay any attention to anything I say and are probably sleepwalking through life. I suppose it'd help if I tried to learn their names. People usually react to their own name.
Oh, a color survey. Fun. My monitor went *blink* in December, and since then, everything's been the wrong color online, even lolcats. Of course, this cannot stop me from answering the color survey. He asked so nicely...

I know what you mean, Leanan, with the getting family members to hang up. Nearly every member of my family other than me hangs up very slowly. It tends to go like this.

"Okay, I have to go now, take care, b-"
"Take care. And study hard!"
"I will. Okay b-"
"And eat well!"
"I do, oma. Now b-"
"And don't let the clowns eat you while you sleep!"*
"Uhhh sure b-"
"And tell your mother I called"
"Okay I will, bye"
"Good bye"

*No, nobody in my family says this, certainly not my oma.

However I've never done the "No you!" thing with the girlfriend because I usually have pretty good reasons for hanging up on her. I have occasionally done the "I should sleep, but I don't wanna!" "Go to bed!" "No. You go to bed!" "I'm not going to bed unless you do!" exchange though.
Vandole wants you to read An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom (NSFW text).
