0116: "City"

Postby Shoofle » Fri Jun 16, 2006 5:50 pm UTC

Randy, how did you make the shading above the city? Just with a pencil, photoshop tricks, or some "art tool" silliness?

This is final proof that the 'yo mamma' crack isn't just for the uneducated.

For the rest of the proof, see Portrait of Yo Mama as a Young Man.

"Yo mama is very lupine, and although she is often mistaken for a Mexican gray wolf, or Canis lupus baileyi, I know that she is actually a red wolf, or Canis rufus, because she is smaller than the gray wolf (her head is narrower, also) and because one time I saw her interbreeding with a coyote."

Indeed

That and the migration patterns were my two favorites, I think.

If only they'd managed to work the word "herpes" into it somewhere. "herpes " makes everything better herpes.

They're talking about comic #116, City -- http://xkcd.com/c116.html, and the book Portrait of Yo Mama as a Young Man, which is one of the funniest things I've ever found.

Shoofle, I did the shading mostly with a pencil, like I do all of it, then messed in Photoshop until it looked how I wanted it.

Ah. I was not aware of the existence of that publication.

the book Portrait of Yo Mama as a Young Man

Ah. I was not aware of the existence of that publication.

It comes strongly recommended. It's the kind of humor that I didn't think you could find at a bookstore. I read the title and glanced at the first page and assumed that it was gonna be a bunch of standard yo mama jokes presented in some sort of scientific-study or list form or whatever, which is a joke that would get old in about half a page.

But it wasn't. It turned out to be something entirely more wonderful.

I'm sure there must be a portrait of Yo-Yo Ma as a young man somewhere.

No one has said anything about all the alliterations. Obvious enough? Otherwise surely someone should've said something.

:) Nicely done. This always reminds me of a passage from Stanislaw Lem's The Cyberiad, in which Trurl is demonstrating his Electronic Bard to Klapaucius:
Stanislaw Lem wrote:“Have it compose a poem -- a poem about a haircut! But lofty, noble, tragic, timeless, full of love, treachery, retribution, quiet heroism in the face of certain doom! Six lines, cleverly rhymed, and every word beginning with the letter s!”
“And why not throw in a full exposition of the general theory of nonlinear automata while you’re at it?” growled Trurl. “You can’t give it such idiotic-”
But he didn’t finish. A melodious voice filled the hall with the following:
Seduced, shaggy Samson snored.
She scissored short. Sorely shorn,
Soon shackled slave, Samson sighed,
Silently scheming,
Sightlessly seeking
Some savage, spectacular suicide.

“Well, what do you say to that?” asked Trurl, his arms folded proudly. But Klapaucius was already shouting:
“Now all in g! A sonnet, trochaic hexameter, about an old cyclotron who kept sixteen artificial mistresses, blue and radioactive, had four wings, three purple pavilions, two lacquered chests, each containing exactly one thousand medallions bearing the likeness of Czar Murdicog the Headless...”
“Grinding gleeful gears, Gerontogyron grabbed / Giggling gynecobalt-60 golems,” began the machine, but Trurl leaped to the console, shut off the power and turned, defending the machine with his body.

In the penultimate line, "sensuously" is misspelled.
