another thing: rm and rm -rf work pretty much like they should, so you can rm individual files, rm -rf individual files and directories, and sudo rm -rf all that and / .

After doing a bunch of reading of the source code (http://xkcd.com/unixkcd/xkcd_cli_all.js), here's what I think is the complete list of commands. Note that many of the commands (e.g. sudo) also display something on their own in addition to if you add the arguments shown below.

Enjoy!

I've noticed that if you go south, then there are exits to the north and south there, but every time I go south I get eaten by a grue. Does anyone know what I need to do to protect myself from the grue and continue south?

I like XKCD this way.
Also, I laughed hard when "sudo rm -rf /" worked.

[oh, and prev and next get hung up when going to comic 404 -- which we all know doesn't exist, but you have to do a display $some_other_number to get past that error]

Doesn't support the alternative "who am i", though. (In fact, "who ARG1 ARG2" works for any ARG1 and ARG2 traditionally... odd quirk)

Just registered so I could comment on this. I love the Unixkcd shell. I would love to keep this interface past today, even just as an option (that I most certainly would be using).

Sorry if I'm a little late to the discussion. I swear, I read most of the first page earlier today.

I see that someone figured out the alt.txt part, that's used as "/alt.txt" after the comic number to display the alt text.

But I've tried writing "sudo rm -rf /" in the console, and nothing happens, all the "files" are still display with "ls". Oh, and put another vote on keeping the layout. Not permanently, but as an alternative option.

that seems to have been fixed. When I ran sudo rm -rf /, any further attempt to do anything returned "unrecognized command"

this is great!

Though in xkcd_cli.js, shouldn't line 222

Code: Select all

if (($.browser.name == 'msie') || ($.browser.name == 'firefox' || $.browser.versionX < 3)) {

actually be

Code: Select all

if (($.browser.name == 'msie') || ($.browser.name == 'firefox' && $.browser.versionX < 3)) {

?

I wonder if they're keeping track of the things people are trying, because several of the commands I tried earlier that weren't implemented back then are now working (rm, who, dir, nano, echo, hello, bash, ssh are all ones I tried before they were implemented).

The only one I actually found on my own was date. (Edit: Oh, and pwd.)

Edit: Did man toaster ever do anything other than the default "Oh, you can figure it out"? It keeps appearing on the command lists people have been posting but it has never done anything for me.

Not quite true. I just tried several commands. who, ssh, emacs, vim, and bash are still recognized commands after recursively, forcibly removing the root directory.

I do like the bash command. Too bad csh has no sort of silliness associated with it.

I notice

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

prints "You are already running Linux"

Anyone on a non-Linux machine know if it's a different message on a different OS?

Scroll Lock, on a Macbook Pro? Help!

Postby Mute2120 » Thu Apr 01, 2010 10:34 pm UTC

Anyone know of a way to get past the starting screen on a Macbook Pro? There is no scroll lock button, and from what I've been able to find OS X just doesn't have an equivalent. I'm stumped and frustrated. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
