Confirmed the same, on both Safari and Firefox on mac.

Now is the time, gentlemen. If the UNIXKCD CLI has been breached, the raptors are on their way.

Perhaps it's a joke in reference to 04/02/2010's comic?

Cute idea. Pity it doesn't work in Opera. Dot and slash start a word search, hyphen zooms out. Makes typing in filenames and parameters a bit hard.

javascript error as reported by ie and chrome:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'num' of null in http://xkcd.com/unixkcd/xkcd_cli_all.js:31

unfortunately, the script comes down in one massive line, so... have fun debugging. I can't think of a way to set the var explicitly, maybe its the number of the latest comic, and moving the url broke access to a script that populates? but theres some interesting comments in that script ;-)

Yeah, not working here either. I have a feeling it has something to do with being moved to a subdomain. I'm sure it'll all be fixed in due time.

Update: It's xkcd.com/unixkcd is fine now. The little lights in the rectangle do what I expect them to do when I hit the buttons.

The code is definitely evolving to add new gags. "ed" and "who" were not commands before.

I believe the "/unixkcd/missing" thing in the code is just a last-ditch fallback in case the code breaks, not a gag. But I don't fully understand the code path to it and I don't care enough to try. EDIT: I've been told this apparently logs missing commands, presumably so popular ones can be implemented.

I was amused by the file name of the image which appears if you do the Konami code five times.

I haven't looked at the code, but I bet it could implement CTRL+ALT+DEL. It already detects CTRL and ALT and stacks them. DEL currently just backspaces, but that could be special-cased.

Things I don't think have been mentioned here yet:
Spoiler:
Commands:
  • serenity

Explaining the A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location) jokes:
  • 2/AMD64/Server Rack - The xkcd server was moved to a new AMD64 server roughly two years ago. davean posted pictures (nerd porn) at the time.
  • 328/M/Transylvania - Dracula
  • 6/M/Battle School - Ender from Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game (okay, this one was explained)
  • 48/M/The White House - Barack Obama
  • 7/F/Rapture - A 7-year old girl in Rapture? This one I don't get. EDIT: D'oh. It's been pointed out this must be BioShock's "little sisters", in the underwater city of Rapture.
  • Exactly your age/A gender you\'re attracted to/Far far away - I feel lonely now
  • 7,831/F/Lothlórien - A female elf (prolly Galadriel) from Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings"
  • 42/M/FBI Field Office - "All girls on the Internet are FBI agents" meme

EDIT: Update, fix spelling, clarify.

7/F/Rapture may refer to Bioshock 2? I believe that locale is named Rapture.

7/F/Rapture is indeed a reference to the "little sisters" from Bioshock (Probably Bioshock 2 as well)

Haha you can make the thing crash by typing in unixkcd and then unixkcd again.

No - it's more clever than that. It records the command you typed in in the server log so that they know what's popular to add

I'm currently getting an 'unable to load start up data' error, and I can't get it to display any comic (when I try I get 'An internal error occured: TypeError: Cannot read property 'num' of null'), though the other commands work. (Chrome)

The help is particularly unhelpful in this context.

The comment on the checkin at Thu Apr 01 16:24:49 -0700 2010 states "Needs more Firefly."

I agree. Suggestions:
  • whatis us: Big damn heroes.
  • which sin: I'm a fan of all seven.

Other ideas? Something more clever that shoehorning quotes from the show into Unix commands, perhaps?

I would also suggest (not from Firefly):

  • make fire: The secret is to keep banging the rocks together

(from one of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" books)

But Unix doesn't have an "analyze" command.

Then again, it doesn't have an "asl" command normally, either. :)

I love the shell evolution. When I typed in "who" yesterday, it returned "Who are you?"

Now, it returns "Doctor Who?". <3 this shell so much!

/me is currently obsessed with Doctor Who. /me has been through all the 2005-present stuff, and is now working through the classics (currently in Season 2). /me would like to point out that /me is in the US, so /me will not be seeing "The Eleventh Hour" for two weeks, even though it shows in the UK tomorrow as of this writing, so please do not spoil it for /me!

I was slightly saddened when after reading the text I got after trying to open nano, I couldn't do a "wine notepad.exe" to follow its instructions...
I'm liking the fact that more stuff keeps being added though. This is fuuun.

Nope thats unix.

The "shutdown -r now" form comes from BSD Unix. "-h" halted. With neither, it will go to single-user mode. This was inherited by Linux, SunOS (1.x), DEC OSF/1 (AKA Compaq Tru64 AKA Digital Unix), and others.

System V Unix used "shutdown -r -g0" or something like that (-g was the "grace period"). This was inherited by SGI IRIX and (IIRC) Solaris (2.x), and others.

Pretty much all Unix/Unix-like/Linux systems support either "init X" or "telinit X" (or both), where X is the runlevel. Runlevel 1 is single-user mode, 0 is shutdown-and-halt, 6 is shutdown-and-reboot.

I believe originally (back at the dawn of Unix), "reboot" and "halt" were different programs from "shutdown". They actually did what they said -- instantly rebooted or halted the machine. "shutdown" was effectively a front-end for telinit, reboot, and halt. Very Unixy.

-----

413j0 wrote:su should also give you permanent "god mode" but require sudoing

If accuracy were a concern, su should prompt for a password without sudo. But I think comedy trumps accuracy here. I'd say leave su the way it is.

413j0 wrote:startx should maybe send to regular xkcd intrface

Oh! I second this one! I tired startx. When it failed, I was trying to think of something it could do.

And "xeyes" should implement this: http://oopstudios.com/ask_me/009_javasc ... index.html

Technical note: If you find http://xkcd.com/unixkcd/ is redirecting you to http://uni.xkcd.com/ and that gives you an "Unable to load startup data" error, try clearing your web browser's cache. Happened to me.

I've discovered that [CTRL], [D] will log you out. You have to press-and-release them one at a time, though.

Atomsk wrote:I don't get the 'You are not a diety.' you get if you type 'ed'.

I was assuming that's simply a reference to the need to be "God-like" to use ed(1), but I suppose it might be something else I don't recognize.

squareroot wrote:I like sleeping in the bed two units south of my computer... :D

Sleeping anywhere else is just as refreshing, apparently. Even if you're dead! ;-)

So I thought it would be really cool if this could be run as an actual unix shell. So I made it work. Uses Rhino and Envjs to make things work. It's not perfect, it was designed to work with html within a browser after all. But it works, and I think it's pretty cool.
