I also didn't get the joke and was assuming it's because TSA guy has to look at cocks all day. But I was confused as to why it was called "anxiety." Then again, I can't really relate to being concerned about the size of my cock, because I don't have one.

However, I did learn about imaging technology I didn't know about. So while I didn't find this comic too funny, at least I found it educational, and that's not too bad.

A recent viagra study...

Postby Analogy » Fri Aug 13, 2010 10:55 pm UTC

A recent study in hamsters showed that sildenafil citrate (known commercially as Viagra) aided in a 50% faster recovery from shifts comparable to eastward travel experienced by humans and was effective starting at low doses.[10] However, this use has not been tested in humans and is considered an off-label use by the drug's manufacturers.

I heard this guy http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100810/bs_yblog_upshot/rogue-jetblue-flight-attendant-being-hailed-as-a-modern-american-working-class-hero was having sex when he was arrested. Maybe the passengers on Viagra are going to his place? Is that the joke?

Alternatively, the classholery entails putting all these guys in a situation where they, in the words of Bob Dylan and Freddie Mercury, can't get no relief.

But if that was a rape joke, yeah, I am retaining my laser ninjas.

So some guys are insecure about their size so they medicate themselves in order gain an erection to presumably impress someone who they will never see again? Putting aside the impracticality of selling prescription drugs a few yards away from federal law enforcement agents, what's the appeal of being aroused going through the scanner? Aren't public erections generally a source of embarrassment? When your middle school teacher calls on you to go up to the chalkboard when you have an accidental erection, the natural response isn't, "all right, time to show off."

I guess the security guy having to look at boners is supposed to be some just punishment for the invasion of privacy, but after about 3 or 4 blue and white backscatter dongs, it seems like one would get used to it pretty quickly. I know a urologist who literally has to look at penises all day for work, and his life isn't some sort of grotesque nightmare, he's actually quite happy and fulfilled in his life and work.
To all law enforcement entities, this is not an admission of guilt...

That said, I thought this comic was hilarious, once I understood it.

I concur. I was about to post almost the exact same thing when I read your post. I'm a transwoman, and I've been increasingly terrified to fly because of the ever more invasive security theatre. Knowing you've been stopped several times makes me feel even worse. An absence is a curiosity, but something present where none should be is suspect. Considering passengers give up all basic human rights to the whim of security officials, I don't plan on stepping into an airport anytime soon.

tangrams wrote:It's a reference to this article. A TSA screener got made fun of by his coworkers for having a tiny dick after he went through the scanner. This is also relevant because there's a big controversy currently over whether these full-body x-rays are too invasive to privacy or not.

That article really made the comic for me, before reading that the whole comic seemed a bit "right, about time another comic appeared"

Does that make black hat guy a slightly twisted vigilante, saving the poorly equipped from the mockery of their evil screeners? :D

I think this is about the anxiety of both the passengers and the worker. The passengers who are anxious will pay the money, others who aren't won't. The worker won't know who is who until the scan. Unless it's some sort of lame joke about how every man thinks he's too small? ... I hope not.

After a certain combination of increasing age, declining health, and increasing perversion ... no.

That shame is a result of conditioning, not anything "natural". Although, it WOULD be hilarious to see someone at the chalkboard completely oblivious they had an erection.

OH! I thought it was a parody of that old joke "Is that a gun in your pants, or are you just happy to see me," the joke being that the security guy would have to do a strip search for every male to check for a gun.

Your theory clashes with the fact that the title of the comic is "Anxiety".

I actually agree with gamer...surely the security guy is feeling anxious about oncoming boners?

Most teachers call you to the board because they know you have an erection. If you stuff your pants they will be embarrassed because you are bigger than the teacher.

It would probably work better if he flipped the image, so that the left-to-right readers could see the setup first (black hat guy) and the punchline second (security officer).

Edit: While he may have had the punchline and setup different than what I have described, I personally think it would work better this way.

Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

He enjoys helping people overcome sometimes debilitating illnesses and improve their quality of life?

no you twit, he enjoys staring at man-meat 24/7 cause he's a flaming homosexual, since you know, seeing another man's penis is the absolute worst thing any heterosexual male can possibly experience. It's built into our genes and definitely not a product of hollywood stereotypes perpetuated by a culture developed by mainstream mass media. Nope. Never.

So unless you like choking on cock, you must avoid seeing another man's penis, or you could catch a case of "teh gay".

Edit: Of course not that there's anything wrong with that right? We're mature enough to accept gay people into society right and not belittle them or attempt to insult heterosexual people by accusing them of homosexual tendencies, since there's nothing wrong with being gay in the first place, right? I mean, we all read xkcd so of course we're all better than the average bigotted scum of society, right?

Have we really reached the point where there is no outcry, 1984 quotes, or at the very least some kind of serious discussion about this kind of shit? As a joke it was so-so; I thought the real purpose (like the atheism comic) was to stimulate debate.

Umm, I believe that the last 4 guys in the line (excluding the black hat guy) are the same guy, in a time progression sequence:
1. Dude sees the viagra stand.
2. Dude opts to try it.
3. Dude proceeds to end of line.
4. After a while (20 minutes? - I've been in security lines much longer than that) Dude looks down and goes, "woah!"
Anyone else see it that way?
Iggy.

Hm, the suitcases of guy 1, 3 and 4 from the right, not counting BHG, look suspiciously identical. You have a point there.

I have an air pump that has a cable that contains lead, there's a huge warning on it that you should wash your hands after touching it.

The absurd thing is, it's a car socket powered pump for an inflatable camping mattress.
When camping outside, even with a car, you seldom carry enough water to wash your hands regularly...

who says BHG is REALLY selling them Viagra?? it seems like he would sell them something painfully worse to take effect for the actual plane ride, much more classholish. or he has cleverly mixed both concoctions of hallucinogens and Viagra. maybe he is only sellin this very concoction because the men buying deserve it for being so insecure in the first place... many things to consider here..
