If the participants in the experiment already know who is in the control group, the experiment is useless anyways...

If you were responsible for the preparation, but not the administration of the substance, you could know, and the people actually administering it would be none the wiser.

This made me laugh more than most of the recent comics, although I loved "Showdown" too :D
I usually love the "my hobby" ones, though. They're all pretty good.

How would you tell the difference between any xkcd character with shoulder-length dark hair and any other? Never mind whether you can tell what the person's name is (and I don't recall any character we ever see in the strip being identified as "Megan")--the only character of that physical description who has definitely recurred even once is hat guy's girlfriend. There's no more reason to believe that the rest are all the same person as there is to believe they're all different. There isn't even enough information to determine that it's female ...

... which is one of the things I like about xkcd. Except where explicitly noted to make a point, the gender of the characters doesn't *matter*.

Eh, this seems implausible to me. Why isn't the experiment double-blind?
Evidently, the key to understanding recursion is to begin by understanding recursion.

The rest is easy.

Noooo. Hat Guy's girlfriend has long hair. Megan is the one with short hair. Hat Guy's girlfriend doesn't have a name.

And yes, the girl on LSD in today's comic could easily be Megan.

Also: It seems that the generic male-with-no-features's name is turning out to be Rob. (See the one with the guy traveling back in time and killing himself every month, the one with the Indian burial ground) But it could just be a coincidence.

Certainly. And just as easily not.

My suspicion is that Randall has a go-to set of fairly generic common names which he uses for his fairly generic characters. I don't know why I read it that way and so many other people have decided they're all the same people over and over, but as far as I can tell there's no evidence either way.

(People who think that the romantic strips have any correlation to Randall's actual love life are still ridiculous, though.)

Even if the experiment IS double blind, I can imagine the researchers being startled that any of the subjects are responding that way at all. :P

I believe it was established in this comic: http://www.xkcd.com/746/ Good strip, Randall must be bored though. I was sick to my stomache yesterday and in need of drugs, not sure I'm over it though.

159 was the first time the short haired girl was called Megan, I believe - though admittedly her hair does seem to have changed over time. Although in a comic like this it doesn't really matter anyway whether or not she's Megan or just a generic female character.

I saw this and assumed that it was double-blind (and also that arranging both subjects in the same frame--different places at the same time--was a visual metaphor for what would actually happen: same examination room at different times). Now that I think about it though, the logical response of blinded researchers would be not bewilderment but extreme alarm at the career-ending side effect exhibited in the half of subjects that are "obviously" not controls. (A 20% rash reduction is perfectly consistent with the null hypothesis.)

I like the subtle pun in the title, but it could have been even better: "Control Freak".

That was my reaction as well. I had read the "my hobby" part, so I wondered whether his hobby was to move spiders between people, and what would be the punchline about the guy not noticing all the spiders that had caused the rash to begin with...

Oh my god... Placebos are getting stronger? This could lead in the far future to a dystopian society, where a sugar pill can cure all types of cancer and solve any problem you have, and the scientists are desperately trying to figure out how it works.

Also, I didn't know LSD reduces skin rashes. I mean, the girl who sees spiders obviously has a different problem.
