At the moment:

peristeronic -> 8010
"fucking peristeronic" -> 4
"peristeronic as shit" -> 5

Blue -7,4
Red -7,6

Let's see what google got tomorrow ;).

No. One of the lessons that history has taught a number of societies is that, while feces are good fertilizer for most crops, it's a bad idea to use a species' shit to fertilize its own food. Thus, you want to put your chicken, cow or goat shit on the crops intended for human consumption, and vice versa. Human shit can be used in the flower garden, but not in the vegetable garden.

The reason is straightforward: Shit contains micro-organisms from the animal that produced it. If you use your animals' shit to grow their own food, there's a chance that some of the disease organisms will survive the season, and you'll have sick animals. If you cycle those disease organisms through a crop without contact with their natural host, most of them will die (perhaps in the digestive system of a different animal species).

In China, farmers have traditionally provided outhouses for the use of travelers, and used the shit to fertilize crops that were fed to their chickens and pigs. This tradition didn't arise by accident; it was learned as a way to isolate travelers' intestinal diseases from other humans. So no, feces are not fungible.

I question those adjectives under the "Never" column. Years ago, a friend apologized for something, saying "That should assuage your anger." My reply: "Oh yeah, my anger's assuaged as all fucking get out!"

The discussion continued for some minutes.

I find it hilarious that Randall had to explain, in the comic, what "peristeronic" means. He's so adorably subtle when trying to start a meme.

Also, "Orwellian" definitely should be in that list, reminding us of that hilarious time when some geniuses started using it on the discussion about that Pep Rally strip.

I definitely chuckled at "fucking bemused".

'apathetic' has a red-phi of -8.2 and a blue phi of -12.0.
'indifferent' has a red-phi of -8.3 and no blue phi.

Nitpick of original premise: a lot of the instances of the phrases in question aren't actually adjectives being modified at all--especially the instances of "fucking," because on the Net, the word "fucking" appears on a great many random-word spam pages.

For example, try doing a Google search for ["fucking stochastic" -xkcd]. It currently tells me there are about 28 results, which is presumably the number Randall used for the comic. But in fact there are really only 16 results, if you click through to page 2.

Of those 16, 8 (including all 6 on the second page of results) are porn spam pages that happen to have the words "fucking" and "stochastic" next to each other. (Including the amusing phrase "fucking stochastic frontier models with spatial component.")

Two more results are for the phrase "XANAX is that fucking stochastic" on a Xanax spam page.

Five are for phrases in which "fucking" doesn't modify "stochastic": "Fucking stochastic shite", "FUCKING STOCHASTIC PROCESSES" (2 instances), "Fucking stochastic life-support system" (2 instances).

So it turns out that before this comic, there was actually only one instance on the entire web of "fucking stochastic" in which "fucking" modified "stochastic":

"The times, they are achanging, but whither and how, that is beginning to look fucking stochastic."

I imagine similar things are true of other "fucking" items on the list, but I'll stop now.

I realize that I'm partly nitpicking the comic's phrasing; does it really matter whether "fucking" is modifying an adjective? The numbers are interesting either way.

But I'm also disagreeing with the comic's methodology, because the word "fucking" appears on so many web pages that I think the noise will drown out the signal for a lot of the less common adjectives, resulting in the numbers not really giving useful information about how live people use language.

Then again, the whole idea of using Google results numbers to calculate linguistic answers is a little dubious. (For example, notice how the number went from 24 to 16 when I went from page 1 to page 2; and notice that nearly half of the results were effectively duplicates.)

There could be only one rather self-serving reason why 'Awesome' is not among the adjectives surveyed for :)

Nope. Anyone who's worked with animals can tell you there's a world of difference between carnivore/ominvore shit and strict herbivore shit, in terms of smell, texture, and I suspect, in the chances of contact making you sick.

It's the kind of word that gets picked up by pseudointellectuals - like "Orwellian".

In said pseudointellectuals' defense, anyone who can properly refer to a situation or event as Orwellian is probably an intellectual cut above the Average Joe. Yes, it gets overused by high schoolers taking AP English, but what are you really expecting of that sort of person? Not everyone can be an authentic intellectual who feels disenfranchised by others co-opting a neologism and making it canonical. Oh, jeez. That was terribly pseudointelligent of me to say.

(In text, I think I'm coming off as terribly standoffish, but I swear I'm just poking fun. I'm mostly just taking your idea and running with it.)

In case you're wondering,
"peristeronic" has now gained the following rankings:

blue: 13/8660 -> -6.50
red: 14/8660 -> -6.42

Mostly from blog hits.

I'm not sure how to interpret it, but googling either phrase without quotes gains 8100-8400 hits...does that mean 90+% of uses of the word "peristeronic" are in an informal context? 'Cause that doesn't seem accurate...

The data is wrong

Postby DavidRoss » Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:01 pm UTC

For "these commodities are fungible", I get 4 hits. For "these commodities are fucking fungible", I get two hits. That's -0.7. Those are references to the current comic, so the real number was -infinity. Interestingly, when you query Google for "these commodities are fungible as shit", you get zero hits, but Google does not allow itself to return zero hits, so it relaxed the search a little. The first hit was a page about Goldman Sachs.

For Fungible alone, the data shows -10.9, which is not between 12 and 13 as Randall shows. Haha Randall, your data is wrong, wrong, wrong, so you are therefore not funny. (Even before the day's additions, the data shows -11.1.)

The ratio of ("fucking fungible") to ("fucking fungible" and "sarah palin") you ask? -2.6. I can't explain why one out of every 13 entries has her name. (OK, 2 out of the 27 hits.)

And to think, Randall can make genuinely clever and interesting comics by making graphs of Google search results.

And to be honest, "delicious as shit" doesn't sound very good.

But the issue is that you are searching for the phrase "these commodities are fucking fungible," whereas the graph data is showing results for searching the phrase "fucking fungible." The stuff the figures are saying on the side is just for giggles, it's not what was actually searched.

Listened to the "Distant Worlds II" soundtrack, today; that sense of nostalgia could very well be described as "fucking piquant".

...but judging by Google, most people only use it to describe sexual acts performed with agreeably stimulating females.

I just noticed there are no Google results for "fucking malamanteau" or "malamanteau as shit".

It's not an adjective, but someone should have tried it by now, and they haven't. Therefore, I'm trying it. :3

Malamanteauistic. Of, about, or having the qualities of a malamanteau. That word malamanteau is fucking malamanteauistic!

In other news, I'm going to start using the term "fucking peristeronic" more often. Doesn't matter if it makes sense or not.

Some of those numbers are pretty surprising. In particular- "fucking bemusing" and "fucking fungible" are far more fungible frequent than I would have expected.
Also- did anyone else not know what "jejune" meant and momentarily thought it was a chinese word used on Firefly?
