More specifically, it's LJ aka LiveJournal (as far as I can see) which is mostly Russian.
That said, I can't tell what the larger LiveJournal island represents if the smaller is Russian section. Sould be the other way around.
And, I have no idea who Sarah Palin is.

Today, I learned what two monitors are for. But still can't see Jabber in this world.

Also, kind of amused that two Russian social networks got their space on the map, besides the LJ.
Would be interesting to hear from fellow xkcd talkers what other country-specific sites got listed here, not counting Chinese since I see them quite clearly, and I already heard of that Polish site.

Well, the Facebook Lands are missing the

Eye of Zuckerberg

The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing.

An interesting concept but I'd dispute some of MMO Island. Real Time Strategy games (ala Starcraft, SCII) aren't MMO's per-say. They're M and O but not M, M, and O. Definitely a huge part of internet society however, with the original Starcraft being practically a national sport in Korea. Also WoW would have to be something like half the island or more with it's ridiculously huge and long lasting user base (of which I admittedly have been part of for 3+ years.).

Another fun fact, WoWwiki, the wiki dedicated to World of Warcraft info, is touted as the 2nd largest English language wiki in the world, next to Wikipedia. Imagine if we did something constructive with our free time =P

Clearly, porn is its own continent. I for one can't wait to see the map.

No, it's not at all an MMO. It's just an MO. It's missing the "massively".

For it to be massively multiplayer, you have to be able to play with a "massive" number of people simultaneously. The max in Starcraft II is what, still 8 or so? Or did they raise it a bit?

It would be a HUGE stretch to call it an MMO based on ladder rankings or anything else.

Wouldn't most of 4chan qualify for bordering on troll bay? Or does the Sea of Memes encompass Troll Bay?

I found an error on the map.

There is no nasa-klasza.pl
There is nasza-klasa.pl (or nk.pl, as they market today).

Kinda happy 2+2 made it in. Maybe online poker should have also, over 50 billion hands have been played on pokerstars alone.

The facebook farm thing is out of control. How many millions of man-years are wasted on that trash?

Also, to he who wondered what is the other continent besides Spoken Language: it must be Non-Verbal Language (Body Language being a part of it) and it's several times larger than Spoken but is mostly uknown to us though its borders are seen on the horizon.

Can anyone read* what's around the Isle of Mockery on the Blogosphere Core Region? I can read "People of Walmart" but can't make out anything else, or what it says on the actual island itself.

Thanks in advance.

Jack.is wrote:Am I the only one who expected to find Neopets somewhere around the MMO Isles?

Well actually... *raises hand*
It has declined in recent years, but it could still be the large island next to Gaia.

I was also expecting to see TVTropes somewhere on the map. Guess it's too small, when you see how big wikipedia is. Its size was overestimated in the last one because the majority of its edits are done by a smaller and more devoted group (see here).

It's strange when a part of the internet that's important to you, though it may seem quite big, pales into insignificance on this map. I mean, this forum contains an unimaginable amount of text, but it's not even one pixel on the blown-up forums scale. And Farmville could comfortably swallow up every forum in existence. It really makes you feel how small we really are, in comparison to the great overshadowing presence that is the internet.

When looking at the original map, it was interesting to see that MySpace was so much bigger than Facebook was.

Now comparing Facebook with Myspace is like comparing Russia with France.

I found two German-speaking entries. StudiVZ*/MeinVZ* (started as social network for students but is now linked with the more generic MeinVZ) and XING ("business-social-network"). Both are West of Lamebook Bay.

* Mein VZ = Mein Verzeichnis = My Directory/Index, Studi (as posted before here) is an abbreviation for student.

I don't think Minecraft really exploded in popularity until late 2Q or 3Q2010, which would put the time for the assessment of sizing after the map was created. The fact that there is a second evaluation of community size shows the importance of time in the assessment. Minecraft is really a fairly new growing trend. I'm sure it'll be on the next map!

What really surprised me was the relative size of AdultFriendFinder versus dating sites.

Should still be corrected... now it sounds like it's a website for some kind of NASA enthusiasts ;)

Went through the whole forum thread just to see if someone else noticed the misspelling of "nasza klasa"... then again, I am actually surprised it got included into the map. It's big enough? Huh.

(rumor is it's increasing the death rate of people above 55 - when they get up at 4am to collect their veges and find them stolen, and get heart attacks)

+1 to that :D If anyone cares to know, Happy Farm's crops are FFA once they ripen, allowing others to steal part of your crop if you fail to harvest them immediately

If spoken languages is represented, where is written language that's not online?

For that matter, if porn (a form of visual communication) is supposed to be on another continent (as per frequent suggestions here), shouldn't YouTube, Flickr, and all the other video and image sites be over there too?

I'd say on the planet Communication; the Old World supercontinent of Nonverbal is composed of the loosely connected continents of Pheromones, Body Language, Nonverbal Sounds, and the like. The New World of Verbal has been colonized by the Old World nations, giving the new nations of Spoken Language and Visual Communication; a joint colonization of theirs established the superpower of Written Language. From Written Language was born the Internet, which subsumed the majority of Written, and has begun to reverse-colonize Visual and Spoken as well.

Am I the only one disappointed by this map? It doesn't make any sense as an update from the previous map. I would have loved it to have the two maps side by side as an illustration of how the webs change, but now that's just going to look ridiculous.

Exactly what I was thinking.

And for all you people marvelling at the wasted hours on Farmville, I agree in that it looks like the most abominable game ever, but how is wasting time on it any different to wasting time on COD or Mariokart or ANY OTHER GAME?

Guild Wars should probably feature on MMO isle. With several million players (sold > 6M copies, perhaps 2-3+ M currently active) it's about 20% of the size of WoW and arguably the #2 paid "combat/adventure" MMO. Heck, it dwarfs Eve.

Also, I didn't see X-Box Live (and similar services). Is it/they actually quite small, or doesn't really count as a "community"?

Two things:
1. I know of the phrase 'QQ' but is that supposed to be a website, because it's huge for something I've never heard of; and
2. Why is youtube on the island of Sulawesi?
