XKCD Forum?

That's what I was thinking...I was wondering if anyone else thought so too.

Shouldn't Free Republic be part of Conservative blogs, rather than off on it's own as an island?

Where is Steam? X-fire?

Strangely missing :(

EDIT: I assume Xbox Live and PSN don't count because they are not PCs.

The forum I used to admin would be 5.05 pixels in size using back of the envelope math on some sites that I know their interaction count. That kinda sucks, heh.

Steam is on there. It's tiny though.

Not really, there's a load missing (Sina Blogs, Weibo, Tianya etc all have millions of active users - e.g. Tianya must be larger than those .nl sites on the map because they have more users than the whole population of Holland). And why is Kaixinwang so far away from Happyfarm?

The XKCD forums are small town, not an entire island. A single person can keep up with the forums, read every new post in a day, and still have time to goof off on other websites or .. do other things. Like go outside. A single person can get to recognize and speak with pretty much every active member here.

There's plenty of other forums where a single person can't even keep up with a subforum, much less the entire thing. And there's no way you can know everyone.

 This comic made my cry inside.

Well not the comic itself, which is absolutely amazing, but the data in it. It brings tears to my soul that the largest internet entity is Facebook, and, as a hardcore gamer, those tears become a torrential downpour of sadness when I see that Facebook games are the top two played video games in the world.

Well anyway, amazing comic Randal, I've always wanted a followup on the first map, and you delivered with excellence. I just didn't know it would bring such sad news.

"I was about to post to mention that larger problem with the "forums" section. Randall must not have talked to any of the mommyblogger community to get a feel for how active all the women oriented sites are (knot/nest/bump forums, babycentercommunity, etc). There's a ton of them and they often move so quickly it's hard to keep up. It was surprising to me how active those communities are (looking around at some of them now that I got knocked up)."

You're absolutely right. knot/nest/bump and babycenter are huge.

and wikipedia (might have missed that - sure it's there).
and porn. :)

I believe that the statistic being measured here is "amount of content produced by members of a given community".

Porn scores low because a lot (most?) of the content is commercially generated, then spooged out on to a mostly silent audience.

Similarly, Wikipedia is small because he's counting edits per time period (spring & summer 2010), which is minuscule (or even microscule) compared to, for example, Tweets or "Darcy found a stray lamb on her farm!" messages.

This... is simply brilliant!

Srsly, correct "nasa-klasza".

It's like you wrote "facebuck" or "myspase" for polish people.

The word "nasa" doesen't exist in polish language (unless you mean space agency), klasza too, and "klasza" is close to "kasza" which means "groats".

I don't know my feelings about this map...

I really like how facebook has now become the dominant country, which speaks volumes about the internet today.
But where is wikipedia? Where are the webcomics? Where is the pr0n?

Furthermore, I would love to see randall finish the rest of the continent. There are so many ways that he could go from there now, and If he doesn't do anything, I'm going to be really disappointed.

Somebody's probably noticed this already, but there's a bit of a typo on the poster--"nasa-klasza.pl" is what's written, but the site is actually called "nasza-klasa.pl." Just being annoying.

To guesstimate the size of TVTropes: The last 2k edits were at 4edits/minute, 430 forum topics were active in the last 24 hours, with 122 active in the last hour.

This was calculating using the amount of "social interaction". Anyone know exactly what that means? Quantity of time spent actively utilizing the website? Unique page views? Unique daily visitors? Amount of human generated text?

My hobby: Reminding people that Spring begins in September, and that Christmas is in the middle of Summer and is usually very hot and never involves snow, and that it can even sometimes exceed 40 degrees on a very hot Summer's day such as New Year's Day, whereas June and July are the coldest months of the year where the mercury can drop as low as 5 degrees or even sometimes, on a particularly cold day, below the freezing point of water, but even that's rare, and that Easter occurs at the start of Autumn, the season when only a very small percentage of trees lose their leaves and change colour, in many countries in the southern hemisphere.

In a possibly poetic twist, Farmville was actually ripped-off of Happy Farm, which is... a Chinese production.

:O
Randall...
may I make you my king?

I have the first Online Communities map on my bedroom wall, with a wooden frame and everything, and every time I look at it I think to myself "This seems out of date now, Facebook is so small and MySpace is so big." It does say "Spring 2007" on the bottom.

Now this... this is a grand map. It covers everything imaginable.
(lol Club Penguin)
I'm actually... tempted to play MapleStory again. Hmm.

Oh, and to the people on the first page (and probably throughout the thread): Did you not see the links to the enlarged image and the poster preorder?

EDIT:
I am a member of a tiny UT2004 clan forum that has no more than 40 members. I like to think that it is one of those tiny little dot islands in the forum section.

Tobu wrote:To guesstimate the size of TVTropes: The last 2k edits were at 4edits/minute, 430 forum topics were active in the last 24 hours, with 122 active in the last hour.

Good lord. Is it on there? I didn't see it.

Ethan Bloch included Google in his map, i was wondering why it wasnt included here. was it just a matter of size or was there something else. i think its safe to say that it is the most visited site in the world so why not represent it
