I don't know if this has been posted yet (sorry if it was, I tried to find it in the thread).

There is a typo in the map, the Polish social networking site is called nasza-klasa.pl, not nasa-klasza as it appears on the map. I hope you can fix it before you start selling the poster version! :)

Good lord. Is it on there? I didn't see it.

It isn't, but I'm thinking it should be. For comparison, using the great metafilter infodump:

Code: Select all

grep '2009-08-11 17:' commentdata*.txt |awk '{print $2}' |sort -nu |wc -l
63
grep 2009-08-11 commentdata*.txt |awk '{print $2}' |sort -nu |wc -l
288

Caveat: I picked some random time period, within the range my last infodump had.

I have no idea how to infer comment counts from thread activity (I have exact counts for MeFi but not TVTropes). Maybe there's a Poisson law I could use or something.

Another point of comparison… 5879 dreamwidth accounts posted an entry in the last 24 hours. LJ has 169677, though I've noticed a lot of splogs there. I suspect entries average less comments than forum topics do.

Awesome crazy map. I too was at the tip of the iceberg on registering just to say this. That said, I have failed to find Tvtropes, the tons of furry and anime sites and other fetish crap, ED (Haven't found it either), Newgrounds, torrent sites (which should be overflowing with "activity"). Deviatart should also be going crazy in size with all the Deviations they submit every single second, as well as all the blogs/home-made celebrities they have there. And no, this is not a list of sites I go to, just one I see tons of shit flowing through daily at a crazy rate. And what about the news sites or about.com, or all the crappy webcomics? Surely they have a spot, no matter how small, on the face of the internet. And what about all the flash game sites? They're servers are probably overheating all the time.

However, I understand how crazy it is to map something like this, so these are easy mistakes to forgive. Technical crap compared to tower of overall accuracy. Thanks for the update on this Randell!

So I just moved, and when I left my brother gave me his copy of the 2007 map/poster to take with me. I just today moved into my new room where I can now finally put it up....and I check xkcd and find this little slice of awesome.

I guess there's only one thing to do now - get this one and put them up side by side.

This definitely has some real world maps incorporated...

the place where GG is look like the Iberian peninsula...

the Twitter Island is pretty much a very distorted North America.

Any I missed?

what about a new map of the internet(IPv4), that has not been updated sense 2006. would be easy, just remove all the green from it and just leave a few blade of grass.

Everyone was so focused on the Polish website being misspelled that I figured there couldn't be any other misspellings, particularly of English words...so I googled "prarie dogs" to see if it was a website I'd never heard of (as opposed to prairie?). I don't think it is...am I wrong?

It is misspelled as "nasa-klasza.pl" though.
And actually it changed name to "nk" and domain to "nk.pl" a few months ago.

First of all, I think this is a beautiful map, and my guess is that Randall finished it too late for an intended #800 XKCD. In this he follows the proud steps of every other internet service or software company in existence.

Secondly, as everyone else, I would like to bring my pet peeve: Online FPS is more than Steam, and I think a small achipelago of independents around Steam Island would have been appropiate.

Well, given that "MMO" stands for Massively Multiplayer Online, Starcraft II is indeed an MMO. What you meant to say was that it is not an MMORPG.

Near Euro Gulf is NASA-KLASZA.pl. It should be NASZA-KLASA.pl
It means "our class".

The map is just wonderful.

QQ an IM service that is huge in China and other Asian countries. Randall's not referring to the "crying eyes" QQ in this case. That being said, I love all of the references in the Asian area of the map! I definitely commend Randall for doing all that research!

Hah, get out of my head. I don't do Risk, but I was just thinking it would make an interesting map for a flash game or something.

All the posts I'm seeing about communities Randall left out seem to be pretty unjustified. He did his homework well. I do feel that the mini map of the continent needs more detail, though.

Awesome :) the only thing I think it's missing is the compass that was included in the first map that included "focus on real life" "focus on web" etc.

btw this is my first post. I generally like to look through forums a lot because far too many of them are full of flamers. Though I am not a total n00b, i have been known to NOT know everything about everything, as most flamers tend to do. I like this one, because flaming seems to be kept at a minimum. Maybe most people on here just humbly know everything :P

I looked pretty hard, but I couldn't find Newgrounds on the map. I'm surprised, Newgrounds has a fairly large forum and community, though I guess maybe it doesn't have the social activity parameters that Randall was looking at? Probably the same reason a lot of porn sites aren't on there too (or maybe that's Randall being tasteful).

I'm also (somewhat) surprised at the people who didn't read his explanation that its not a measure of community size, but social activity as he vaguely defines it. Read before you whine people, sheesh.

I'm suprised at not finding Newgrounds or Tvtropes there too, as those are very active sites with a lot of people.

4chan looks like a penis, and /b/ looks like a scrotum.

THAT is the kind of humour we get on xkcd.

Ok, i gotta say: I have the sudden desire top lay in a tabletop rpg that uses this thing as a world map. I think 7chan would be about teh size of hawaii... which means that this entire thing would be about twice the size of the pacific?

point besides, any one else down for this idea? you can base countries and cultures on the web-forums where they exist.

I'm thinking the 'dark heroes' bit in 'mirrors' published by white wolf would work well if your doing it as a fantasy-ish setting.

any other ideas? wouldn't do well for most scifi, maybe anime?

How big would mail be? not email, but mail? not junk mail, but social contact through the post office? it would be cool to see an equivalent map for 1975, 1950, 1925, etc. telegrams, carrier pidgeons. smoke signals where someone THINKS its a message about an invasion from the north, but it suddenly turns into a whiny appeal to some girl from a young tribesman who everyone is sick of listening to...
