0829: "Arsenic-Based Life"

Postby TheGrammarBolshevik » Fri Dec 03, 2010 5:05 am UTC

Title text: According to a new paper published in the journal Science, reporters are unable to thrive in an arsenic-rich environment.

I found this actually laugh-out-loud funny; the title text, however, reminded me of this seminal paper on the trapezoid method for integration.

That took a long time, I was too scared to post a topic because I'd get it very wrong.

I honestly had to read it twice before I actually got it. Lack of sleep. At least it's better than the Center for Reproductive Medicine's conference.

I think this is cooler than the possibility of life on Titan, but I might be weird that way.
Billy was a chemist.
He isn't any more.
What he thought was H2O
was H2SO4.

Ain't-it-great how super obvious those types of papers are? I wish I could see the full text version...

I actually didn't get what was going on in the last panel until I went back and reread the second one... Then I lolled. :)

Yep, definitely LOL here. Which is a problem, as everyone else is in bed, hopefully asleep. So I had to stifle it.

I think I might have hurt myself...

Thanks, Randal, that's a good one.

It just occurred to me that I saw a poster for Arsenic and Old Lace this morning. Rather prescient of the drama people.

That must have been a heck of a lot of Arsenic to kill them while they were still at the conference itself.

I'm impressed by the correct use of the "œ" ligature in hors d'œuvres. (Way to go the extra kilometre.)

So they did it intentionally. Thank you, I was wondering how these scientists were so dumb.

Unsurprising news is unsurprising. It turns out this is the result of a theory and an experiment that were conducted years ago. Cool, but not revolutionary.

Blasé is passé. Okay, maybe it's not revolutionary, but were you actually not surprised by this? Okay, maybe you read New Scientist every month, fair enough. So tell - what's the next cool but not revolutionary thing we shouldn't be surprised by?

The implications of this ARE pretty cool, because they imply that every bit of phosphorous was replaced by arsenic. DNA with arsenic. ATA (adenosine triarsenate), arsenolipids, arsenolation. It's one thing to replace one of these components with arsenic, and use the rest of the cell's machinery to counteract the chemical changes, but replacing all of them...well it's amazing. And DNA is important, but ATP and other phosphor compounds are fundamental to almost anything requiring energy in the cell. And phospholipids are a whole different kind of molecule that would have to be successfully replaced.

Not as cool as a shadow biosphere with a second origin, or life on Titan, but still pretty neat. And yes, was amused by the comic.

This is the first in a while that's made me laugh. And it's especially extraordinary because I was in a rather pensive mood before now. Good show, Mr. Monroe.

An unintentional bonus joke: shrimp are actually super high in arsenic (arsenobetaine). It's just not the kind of arsenic that makes you sick.

I got the joke, but for some reason I didn't find it funny. On the other hand, this is the first I've heard of arsenic-based life, and that sounds interesting...

GOOMHR again.

I had been anticipating this event, and I fully expected to hear that they'd found the absorption lines of arsenic-based proteins in spectra obtained on a Titan fly-by.

Then I saw the headlines. "NASA HAS DISCOVERED NEW LIFE FORM!" Pictures and everything. I flipped. They found arsenic-based alien microbial life on Titan?!?! DUDE.

I had to read the article four times before I realized that the discovery really had nothing particularly new to do with alien life at all, and was simply a discovery of a novel ability exhibited by known bacteria under artificial stressors in laboratory conditions. Big deal.

Not nearly as exciting as I'd expected. I'll have my elderberry wine with a side of old lace, thank you (+8 internets if you get this reference).

As far as I remember, arsenic has a sweet taste, and doesn't hurt the throat. Hence, an ideal poison.

It was hypothesized some time back and there were a number of experiments. That's not what the big news is about today.

The big news is about the specific bacteria at Mono Lake and how it can substitute arsenic for phosphorus. Folks knew it could happen. We just didn't know that it did, in the manner predicted, in a real honest-to-goodness life form until now.

At least according to mainstream media and popular science news outfits. Dunno yet exactly how the media mucked this one up but I've no doubt they did.
