I'm guessing the google trends for 'pen fifteen' are about to get interesting.

*And I completely miss the joke.

When I was a summer camp counselor, one of the kids in my afternoon session walked in one day with "pen fifteen" written on his arm.

Yes, with the "fifteen" spelled out.

I don't actually get the joke. I get the Pen fifteen, but not why it's funny.

But on a related note, I was at a Diablo LAN last night, and one of my mates named his character Pen15.

So, someone posed as the leader of a made-up secret society, contacted him, recruited him, tattooed "PEN15" on his arm, and then snuck into his house with the note and the kerosene so he would burn down the house.... all as a prank?

I don't know if I'm amused that someone called him up and told him to write Pen15 on his arm, and he kept that scrawl on his body for the next 20 years, or horrified that such a stupid prank coupled with a sequence of random later events led him to burn down someone's house.

Wait... so if B equals D are the rivals of pen fifteen, does that make B equals D the Party?

That, or I am trying to find a 1984 reference wherever I can.

That.

On the subject of "pen15", The Guide Urban Dictionary has this to say: "An old grade school prank. You'd write Pen 14 on your hand and walk up to an unsuspecting schoolmate and ask him if he wanted to join telling him he could be Pen 15. You'd then write Pen 15 on his hand, and everyone would laugh at him. 'I'm in the Pen club. I'm Pen 14, you can be Pen 15.' "

So... the paper with the address was unrelated to him, and he just forgot he had the kerosene?

I have to say that until I had found out about Pen15, I thought that this comic was ingenious. Being part of a secret society yet knowing nothing about it but choosing to support it just because it is the only gaurenteed order that is underlying the ever shifting landscape of the political party system. Then I found out about the joke and I felt like I was trolled. But then, I thought that this highly interesting concept was mearly the set-up for a penis joke made me appreciate it even more. This comic proves to me that Randall Monroe is truly a genius aside from his probably genius level IQ.

Horrified? You might be taking it a little more seriously than you need to. It's a joke, son. Or did I miss the part where it said "this comic based on a true story"?

It's not a prank, it's a silly set of coincidences.
He just happened to find the piece of paper, and 20 years after middle school is when your memory starts to fade, so he forgot about the kerosene he had bought.

Hmmm. If he's a moron, he didn't know what he was doing, so he wasn't being a dick. To be a dick requires malice aforethought. The two are mutually exclusive.

At first, I didnt get the penfifteen bit, so i had to come to the forum to find out, and facepalmed and laughed. then i googled, and found yet another layer of meaning. that sort of thing is one of the reasons i like xkcd. it works on severeal levels. some people just come here for the penis jokes.
the comic is called "mark". is that a triple entendre?

I'm wondering what kind of person writes that on someone's arm that stays for 20 years.

Unless he keeps re-writing over it.

Weirdo.

To my defense, that joke is completely unknown where I am from (most likely because we don't talk English at school.) Also, I have been awake for just about half an hour or so.

Err...the "secret agent twenty years ago" was a class mate of his in elementary school. The joke is that he kept the mindset of a 4th grader being told he was part of a secret society, without realizing it was a penis joke all along. The note and kerosene was a coincidence.

Hahahaha. Most xkcd's have sucked horribly (at least recently), but this one did a great job. The execution was great, unlike some others.

FYI, the comic says "pen fifteen", not "pen15". As the natural thought process does not necessarily include converting "pen fifteen" to "pen15" in 6 seconds (or even 60), it's not a shock that many had to Google it.

Can someone explain the "B equals D" joke another poster made? All I can think of is something related to "BED" (some sort of sex joke) because the equal sign can somewhat resemble "E" if you squint hard enough. Google didn't turn up anything useful either ...

Just like converting fifteen to 15, all you need to do is convert equals to =

B=D

'nother penis joke. Needs more equals.

B===D

Regarding comic, I was mostly amused at the absurdity of it all. That's what I come to xkcd for.
