No need to be sarcastic. How was I supposed to know you could google someone's first name and find them. If you googled "Rebecca" you wouldn't find me.

Unless you were a celebrity who went by the pseudonym of Rebecca.

Regurdlezz, I found the alt-text of this more amusing than the comic, but the comic helped set it up quite nicely.

If you now tell me that it's not the first search result, I will hit you over the head with a big foam cluebat. :P

And yes, if an apparently well-known (to some) person is referenced, you can guess that you can google her. (I had never heard of her, either.)

Wow, I'm not even into pop culture and even I thought the reference in today's comic was terribly dated.

That was the best thing ever.

Also, today's comic was the first in a long time to make me literally laugh out loud. It was the alt text that did it for me.

Bowl of ice for only ninety seconds? (Re: 0846: "Dental Ner

Postby jonadab » Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:19 am UTC

Am I the only one who doesn't understand what's painful about holding your hands in a bowl of ice for only ninety seconds? I mean, seriously, ninety seconds? I've been completely submerged in ice-cold water for several times that long, and while it definitely gets your attention, I wouldn't describe the experience as painful. It was refreshing and even invigorating, but not painful.

OTOH, make it ninety minutes and you've got something more likely to approach the level of pain associated with serious dental problems. I think "seconds" is a misprint and it should read "minutes".

I believe that 1500 is the combined score she received on all three sections (reading, writing, and math). I believe 1500 is close to the average for the SAT, as opposed to 1500 on two sections, reading and math, which is a really good score.

I can't believe I'm registering to post about Kesha, but..

Apparently, she was quite a smart student. NPR says her 1500 was only math and reading of the SAT, and she was in an IB school. Coincidentally, my favorite remix of this song is done by IB students (Do Tok on youtube, for those interested)

Actually, with a quick look at her wikipedia page to tell us when she was born (1987) it becomes likely she took the SAT before the writing section was added 4 or 5 years ago. So her score was 1500 out of 1600, a very good score.

While I found the comic funny, I actually like Ke$ha's music more than others in the genre (like Lady Gaga). It's so over the top that it's clearly ironic, and I find the music itself likable if not revolutionary.

Well that'll do it. Apparently she never graduated, instead she dropped out and got her GED. Smart doesn't mean common sense.

I think my inner Ke$ha has finally finished Randall's song:

WAKE up in the MORning and my BREATH ain't PREtty
and noBODY'S gonna KISS me if my MOUTH smells SHItty
so I ALways brush my TEETH before I START on the JACK
sure, my DRINKing's out of HAND, but I'm conTROLLing my PLAQUE

I'm talkin' teeth gonna look like snow, snow
Brushin' em best I know, know
Dent's blowin' up my phone, phone

Mouthwash and countin' on up to thirty
Throwin' a dental party
Tryna get a little bit healthy

Don't stop, make it pop
Dentist, blow my gums right up
Tonight, Im'ma fight
Till we see the pearly whites
Tooth talk, look like chalk
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh

Don't stop, make it pop
Dentist, blow my gums right up
Tonight, Im'ma fight
Till we see the pearly whites
Tooth talk, look like chalk
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh

Ain't got a care in the world, but I got dental care
Ain't got no money in my pocket, but my teeth are all here
Now, the germs gettin' scared cuz they see Arm and Hammer
But I don't need no teeth bling, cuz I ain't like Mick Jagger

I'm talkin' bout – getting' rid of all that funk, funk,
Plaque's tryna cause that gunk, gunk,
Gonna brush em if they're getting too stunk, stunk
Now, now, we flossin' til I get it out, out
Or the floss will not fit down, down
Floss will not fit down, down
Fah-loss won't fit

Don't stop, make it pop
Dentist, blow my gums right up
Tonight, Im'ma fight
Till we see the pearly whites
Tooth talk, look like chalk
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh

Don't stop, make it pop
Dentist, blow my gums right up
Tonight, Im'ma fight
Till we see the pearly whites
Tooth talk, look like chalk
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh

Dentist, You build me up
You break me down
My mouth, it's still
Yeah, you got me
With my tongue up
You got me now
You got that drill
Yeah, you got me

Dentist, You build me up
You break me down
My mouth, it's still
Yeah, you got me
With my tongue up
Fix my teeth up
Fix my teeth up

Now the appointment don't start till I walk in

Don't stop, make it pop
Dentist, blow my gums right up
Tonight, Im'ma fight
Till we see the pearly whites
Tooth talk, look like chalk
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh

That was hilarious! Thank you for sharing this.

As for the comic itself, I saw the punchline coming from a mile away, this song is old, many people have made similar comments about that particular line, and my mind is boggled at why Ke$ha is famous and actually gets paid for making the garbage that she does. Just goes to show how stupid people are these days. So very very stupid.

Oh, and I really hope to see a parody video including the title-text as part of the lyrics within the week. Especially from all you folk sitting at home in Georgia with nothing to do. And can sing. Which therefore excludes me.

I know right? I didn't think anyone else in this, well, state knew of xkcd!

It's not snowing anymore in dalton but the snow remains and doesn't plan on leaving.

Kinda wierd, another xkcd fan is being affected by this same crazy huge storm.

This makes me want to go brush right now. If someone records these lyrics, it may be the ONLY rap song I have ever liked! You could throw in more XKCD references if you wanted to... but honestly, it doesn't need 'em.

EDIT: Never put a quote tag outside a spoiler tag, and then put the [/quote] inside the [/spoiler]. It puts any additional text over in the sidebar.

Oh geeze, I didn't even think of XKCD references. Heck, that could be a whole other song. Or album of songs. But not for me, I think my next song lyric reworking will be changing Jonathan Coulton's song "Curl" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5deGCvJOGg0) from one about the US Olympic Curling Team to one about the Curl Operator.

Glad you liked it, and if anyone wanted to sing it, I would say gopher it, that would be cool. Though perhaps also not for me.

Did they have all three sections at the time she took it?

On other young celebrities' pages, it usually says "___ got a X score (Y on all three parts)" or something similar.

Dentist, Milk builds them up
plaque breaks them down
My mouth it pounds
I have cavities

I should have brushed
It's too late now
That drilling sound
I hate cavities

I should have brushed
You should all brush

I can relate! Don't know if it was an infected dental nerve, but I eventually had to get a root canal. Never ever thought that the lack of pain could TASTE that good. I really mean it. When I used pain relievers and the pain went away for some hours, or the days after finishing up the root canal in general, it was like a new wonderful flavor I never tasted before.

Makes one wonder if Marshal's pyramid was right after all.

oh em gee, i heart ke$ha.

seriously.

i get made fun of horribly for how hard i rep her, and i don't even 'own' one of her songs. i think she's brilliant. why? because chick makes BANK at age 23. she's a year younger than me but is likely set for life. her musical persona is such that nobody can bring her down- her image is white trash, so she's got like, zero to worry about, PR wise. in fact if anything, her publicist/s probably worry more about maintaining her bad girl image. she also doesn't have to worry a single bit about sounding good live bc she can autotune her live voice and it STILL fits her persona. basically, she has one of the best jobs in the world, and that's to make money off the stupid american music industry and have fun while doing it. my guess is she's pretty vanilla in person.

so when i saw this on xkcd, i was thrilled. her music is designed to be inane and stupid and pop and catchy. but dammit if it's not catchy and just about every single one of you recognizes it instantly and can't get it out of your head. face it- you kinda like it too.

eat it, yall. ...but brush your teeth after.

In "Your love is my drug" I always mishear the line "my status is gonna be affected if I keep it up like a love sick crackhead" as "my sleaze is gonna be affected if I keep it up like a love sick crackhead".

In fact, I wanted to point out those lyrics and in the process of preparing for this post discovered she wasn't say sleaze...

Say what you will, along with Lady Gaga, Kesha's music is incredibly catchy. Not quite up there in epicness with something like Two Steps From Hell, but still.

Apparently, she was quite a smart student. NPR says her 1500 was only math and reading of the SAT, and she was in an IB school. Coincidentally, my favorite remix of this song is done by IB students (Do Tok on youtube, for those interested)

Which leads to the question: "How can someone so smart be so stupid?"

And to the answer:
Spoiler:
"Overexposure to Pop Culture."

Well that'll do it. Apparently she never graduated, instead she dropped out and got her GED. Smart doesn't mean common sense.

it takes common sense to submit to more years of being brainwashed than you absolutely have too?

What now, bashing of people who dare to draw imperfect stuff and put it online? Have a look at the first comics some of the best web comic artists have put up, like the first Questionable Contents, Userfriendlys, Khaoskomix, ... . They start out rather poorly and get better with practice.

Tell me about it. Have you ever seen Powerup Comics? It's a comic that pretends to be a shitty gamer comic but is secretly a parody. Anyway, sometime after discovering it, I decided to read the Penny Arcade archives. That was when I realized the artwork in Powerup Comics was directly modeled after the early Penny Arcade strips.

And maybe so was the writing.

Because this version is actually bearable.

The Simpsons now dead in my mind. Thanks for ruining a childhood cartoon. :(

The Simpsons hit "dead in my mind" a long time ago. Most everything after season 10 or so is fairly unwatchable. However, the episode attached to that intro is actually pretty good. (I don't recall which one it was, but I remember I was pleasantly surprised.)

And I actually liked that song until ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE started using it. The lowest of the low was when it appeared in the trailer for that freakin' Marmaduke movie. Now, months later, nobody's using it anymore and it's just BARELY becoming tolerable again.

And Kesha is MY AGE!? WTF!?

If she wasn't born until 1987, she took the test several years after they "recentered the scale for today's students" (i.e., dumbed it down to make it easier to get a high score). Her 1500 would still be better than my relatively unremarkable 1320, but only by about fifty points, not the 180 you'd get with naive unconverted subtraction.

Also, the SAT doesn't test whether you're a good student. (If that's all they want to know, they can just look at your high school transcript. Let's see, his low grades are the C+ in typing and the B- in phys ed and the B in drafting. He aced physics and English lit and calculus and molecular bio. I wonder if he's a decent student or not? Hmmm...) What the SAT tests, mostly, is whether you're any good at figuring things out. You can't do the analogies section if you function by rote memorization. You have to be able to actually think. The math section is also geared this way. Where the ACT math section carefully goes through all the different math units you've been taught in school since third grade and gives you one or two of each kind of problem to see if you remember how to do them (Can he do a classic mixture problem? Does he remember the Pythagorean theorem?), the SAT skips most of that and just focuses on testing whether you can figure stuff out.

Well, that was my impression, anyway, from taking the ACT and SAT once each, circa 1992.

In an interview with NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... =122610692), she said that she was very interested in math and physics in high school, which kind of surprised me...And that she used to attend lectures on Cold War history at a local college for fun. This, along with things such as the dollar sign in her name being added ironically, her singing style originally being a joke, and saying that she isn't really a party girl (doesn't do drugs, go to clubs, etc.) really makes her an interesting person, considering what her some of her hit songs are about. It's as if Ke$ha could be to the pop music genre what Stephen Colbert is to cable news anchors/commentators.

And I hate to admit it, but her music is kind of catchy....

I pretty much said that. And I justified why. Unless you're claiming that my statements about xkcdsucks are untrue. And I do realize that they haven't always been true, but are now.

You should keep in mind that the author of the blog has changed now. The old one, Carl, usually tried to make balanced and coherent criticism, but he grew tired of it, as the comics presented the same problems over and over again, and it was more or less a general consensus that the best part of it all is the discussion in the comments thread. So the current owner just uses the posts to make fun of Randall, not terribly unlike how Randall makes fun of the things he doesn't like or doesn't understand. So yeah, the fact that there is no constructive criticism over there is intentional. And why! if most of the fans won't read constructive criticism when it's posted here, why would they read it there?

I sort of knew that there were multiple authors, but I also knew that the one who posted real criticism didn't post much anymore.

SirMustapha wrote:When Randall did those funny obsessive comics on ball pits, raptors, kites, for a long time I thought that they were just that: jokes. I was horrified, however, when I learnt that those were actually things from Randall's life that he stuck on the comics. So, now, xkcd seems largely like a great fanfiction of Randall's own life. That feelings spoils many of the old comics that I used to like.

I feel like it's backwards of that. They were just jokes, but then fans expected him to fill the persona he created. I don't think he put himself in the comics, I think the comics became part of him.

Pandora just gave me two Kesha songs in a row. And it actually spells her name like that - no dollar sign.

Also, I know someone who knows someone who knows Kesha.

KESHA.

Why, WHY do so many people hate this song?

I think it's because this song makes you face your flaws. On the deepest level you want to be beautiful and party with sexually attractive and available people all the time. But, you don't, and wonder why not. Surely it can't be because you're not awesome enough. It can't be because your pseudo-intellectual snobbery is a craven affectation you chose to let you imagine your phobias and flaws as strengths. You choose to hide behind your "rationality" to avoid facing the truth. Recall that Feynman was a musical, sexual and somewhat sketchy person, and stop pretending you don't share the desires that define the human experience.

I am proud to say that I am a transhumanist, and Ke$ha's music seduces my soul. :D
