It doesn't have to be bad, it's just because the microscope shows you even the slightest amount of dirt as a huge pile, it's rather disgusting. I actually did this once in my biology lab and didn't really like what I saw.

After the last comic, Randall shouldn't really be telling people what they shouldn't do. :folds arms:

Also, microscopes are awesome. For my 8th birthday I got two of them. The lesser was used for spare parts.

In addition, is he speaking of "The Secret House: The Extraordinary Science of an Ordinary Day"?

In E=mc2, David Bodanis took the life's work of one of history's greatest geniuses and made it "astonishingly understandable" (Parade) to the everyday reader. Now he takes the reader through an average day in and around an average house, showing us the fascinating science beneath the surface-from the static between radio stations, to the millions of pillow mites that snuggle up with us every night, from the warm electric fields wrapped around a light bulb filament, to what really makes the garden roses red. With wit, whimsy, and delightful detail, David Bodanis explains it all in ordinary words--on an extraordinary tour...

A while ago I found some weird hair growing under some of my fingernails. After some testing, I determined it was just thread from a sweater. Fingernails are still disgusting.

I got a microscope that hooks up to the TV.

Let me tell you, the skin on your nose is WAY worse than the skin under your nails.

When I was a kid, I got an electron microscope to play with.

No, seriously- my mother was a metallurgist; she did failure analysis for a power company on their plants. On take-your-kid-to-work day, she'd coat dead houseflies in gold and put them in it. I got to look at the cracks on the hairs in the nose of a fly.

It was pretty bad-ass.

I'm not convinced that's the joke. ( Funny though it is). So a charge of plagiarism is somewhat over the top. However, I'm not sure what the joke is. Fingernail dirt porn?

I think I've seen this before. And not something similar, this exact strip, xkcd logo at the top of the page et all. It was a very weird sense of déjà vu, and then I realized they were fixing a bug in the matrix.

Antennae are not hairs. He's talking about the hairs.

I can understand that it would be icky if you were zoomed in close enough to see individual microbes (100x or more), but under less magnification than that I don't exactly see the problem unless you have poor hygiene.

The best I could find was a microscopic shot of the nail itself, which is much more cool than disturbing.

And a lot of general shots of nail fungus. You can go find those yourself.

Here is a nice thought for you; before your kidneys filter out your urine, it is in your bloodstream. Every time your heart beats, it is pushing urine throughout your entire body. Right now, urine is flowing through your arms, your lips, your eyes and your brain.

Honestly, everything about us is disgusting. If we weren't hard-wired to seek out a mate, we would be repulsed by the idea of mixing genitalia, especially when it involves being so close to someone else's waste disposal.

Every time I hear someone talking about how the proximity of those parts of the human anatomy, I am reminded of how useful a cleanser ammonia is.

Anyway, I thought "The Secret House" he was referencing, at first, was that segment on OWL/TV called The Mighty Mites where three kids could magically shrink to microscopic size. I had to google it to find the proper name.

Congrats on the most disgusting thread so far!

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of the other waste.

Spoiler for the kiddies!

Spoiler:
If a guy and a girl have sex facing each other, the guy's balls often rub against her anus. If from behind, then it's his pubic hair on her anus. At least women don't come into contact with the guy's anus. Usually. If 2 guys, well, it's less sanitary.

I cannot believe there are so many squeamish people in this thread.

The being the most common word in the English language carries no confusion.
Secret is easily understood.
House is well known.

The Secret House makes no sense ... EXPLAIN! before all the options on my screen enter the death cage and have it out royal rumble style ... and rule 34.

Reminds me of how I once tried to get a look at a house dust mite with one of those. But apparently said arachnoids are pretty much nonexistent nowadays.

the ammonia content in human urine is almost nonexistent, there's urea instead of it. and by the way there are bacteria that absorb nitrogen and convert it to ammonia. and they do NOT die from it.
