Ah, yeah, he certainly picked out Minecraft out of a thousand possible references because it was perfect for this comic, and not because Minecraft is very popular among Randall's fanbase and a lot of people would feel very connected to the comic. Yeah.

I remember three things after the general anesthesia when they pulled my wisdom teeth (4).

1. I distinctly heard the dentists to say "Open wider" and then realizing that I had just opened wider and how odd that I didn't have to do that myself, it just happened.

2. There was a loud cracking noise.

3. The dentist said "F*ck".

After the surgery he told me that one of my teeth had cracked when he tried to pull it. I told him I knew. He said he couldn't be 100% sure that all of the tooth had come out. 15 years later I felt something odd in the back of my mouth. There was a small bit of tooth sticking out. I could just barely see it in the mirror but definitely feel it. It had been painfully ejecting itself all that time. I woke the next day and it was gone. (I suppose I swallowed it.)

Dr. Feelgood gave me Percocet.

mmmm Percocet.

If I played MineCraft when that came out, I'd have been one hell of a happy camper. Instead I watched Disney movies with my little sister and laughed my ass off at everything.

Then, it took me 3 weeks to get nonaddictive to the Percocet.

I miss Percocets.

I love you Percocets! Don't forget about me!

I think you are being unfair. There is nothing wrong with making a reference that everyone can relate too. And he certainly hasn't jumped the shark, all of his comics aren't simple popculture references from the second half of the 20th century. Also, I like minecraft and have played it since alpha. And I think the idea of smoothing over a land mass 8x the size of the earth is hilarious. I wonder though. where did he put it all? Then again he may have cheated and just smoothed it to the max draw distance in all directions.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was awake the whole time (insurance didn't cover a general anesthetic). This led to interesting moments in the midst of the operation where the dentist said things like: "Don't be alarmed, you are going to hear a loud cracking sound, this is perfectly normal." They gave me hydrocodone for the pain, but my mother made me stop taking them after two days because of my increasingly loopy behavior.

Dang. Now I wish Minecraft was around for those years I was super ill and had to spend so much time laying down. WoW did okay, but Minecraft really is a far better game for being ill and on medications.

I didn't get pain meds for getting my teeth out. The stuff they gave me made me so dizzy I couldn't take it and I spent my recovery weekend (yep, all two days) on Advil.

Advil, people. Advil.

For some reason I expected by page 2 of this thread you guys would all be discussing world-generating algorithms and how long it would take to flatten/arrange a surface 7x the size of the earth, or even debate whether that's the actual size and provide some maths to back up your arguments.

I suspect at least two of you went "ah hell, what's this damn Minecraft thing anyway?", decided to pick it up and never returned.

I'm told I woke up screaming during my widom teeth operation. I remember nothing of that.

Later my family got a kick out of me insisting they come look at all the shades of green in the back yard. Apparently I sounded like double rainbow guy.

Before the end of the week I was so desperate for hearty food I put a cube of lasagna in a blender. It was not very good and I still had to chew parts of it.

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I had local anesthetic as well. Part of that was nitrous oxide. My dentist told me to go ahead and listen to my music waiting for it to take effect.

When it finally did, a Pachelbel Guitar Concerto was playing on my CD-Player (early 90s, no mp3s yet :D). Since then, whenever I hear that piece of music, I get lightheaded. Damn you, Pavlov!

Also, "...because I am a hologram" is going into my codex of commonly used excuses. It has so many uses!

I created an account just to mention this:

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I attempted to count down as far as I could from 100, held my breath and got to about 73 i think.Regardless, what makes this relevant is that during recovery I was in and out for several hours. During one period of being "awake" I signaled for my mother, who was escorting me in and out of the surgery, to give me a piece of paper so I could write down something that I felt was really important.

It was a schematic of nothing but diodes. There were around 20 total.

Drill Sgt., when you are on the chair take slow but deep breaths through your nose. Tell the dentist it's kinda hard to breathe and he'll crank up the gas for you (mine did anyway). I suppose years of distance running has done wonders for my lung capacity because it was hard to breathe at first before he turned it up.

Years ago I made the mistake of drinking a Margarita while on 24-hour allergy medicine. I felt a little... off, so I told my wife that I was going to go play on the computer for a while. Three+ hours later she came in to find me still playing the same single game of Apeiron (an update of Centipede for the Mac), about 40 levels higher than I had ever reached (and I'd been playing for a couple of years.) I was one with the bugs... (And I never duplicated the feat, although I never mixed Tequila and Chlor-Trimeton again.)

At last, a Minecraft reference. I know this isn't a gaming webcomic, but plugging Miegakure set a bad precedent.

Anyway, off to finish my giant gold statue of me, complete with a redstone circuit that plays Still Alive and a pixel art representation of Level 1-1 of Super Mario Brothers.

I watched The Breakfast Club for the first time while I was doped up after I had my wisdom teeth pulled. To truly appreciate certain movies, I believe, one has to be young and slightly off kilter. I often wonder if i would have appreciated GO more if I were in the same condition I was in when watching Breakfast Club. Not that both are not excellent movies even when one is old and sober.

Well, he just said he smoothed it over. He didn't say he never made, say, small divots in the ground that were 2x2x2, in the bottom of which were placed double treasure chests. He could easily throw in 80 stacks of dirt/stone and still have enough left over to cover over the hole when finished.

...I play minecraft too much when I start to think about the logistics of such an operation, don't I?...

When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, I didn't wan't to be unconscious, and being unconscious was more expensive than being awake. So they gave me some sort of gas. Things started to go hazy and blur and I could feel my mental capacity dropping. I proceeded to attempt to rip the mask off my face while communicating in grunts to those present my displeasure at the state of affairs.

That painkiller stuff they give you? All lies. The pain was excruciating. I was just so doped up that I didn't care. I remember the operating quite clearly, but the events of the following days are quite blurry. I suspect I played some sort of indie game. Alas, there was no Minecraft then.

Minecraft is slowing down our FIRST robotics team. Too many of the high school students on the team, are addicted to it.

I was going on a flight the day after my wisdom teeth where scheduled to come out. Flying alone while recovering from anesthetics is not recommended. The oral surgeon used 12 shots of novacain instead.

He gave me the twelve shots, then went away. Once the novacain was working, he and the nurse started working.

Breaking teeth are loud, because it couples well to the inner ear. Fast surgery heals faster. He had a couple of trays of tools, and used them exactly in order. It was very well planned. No pauses. Less than 20 minutes under the knife, for all four teeth. I never needed to fill my prescription for pain medicine.

Note, there was a planning visit a couple days before the surgery, and the surgery visit itself was significantly longer than 20 minutes. It was less than 20 minutes from the first tool in the mouth to the last stitch. I assume he spent a chunk of time choreographing the surgery.

I got the amnesiasthesia when I had my wisdom teeth extracted. My dad says I was singing "I Am The Walrus" and talking about my petite veins and how "petite" is a feminine adjective because of the "e" at the end. Had everybody in stitches, mine being literal stitches. And then I vaguely remember trying to correct someone at a drive-through pharmacy about how to pronounce my name.

As for the painkillers I got afterward, I was pretty much just stuck with extra-strength versions of acetaminophen and ibuprofen and a pack of frozen vegetables to hold up to my cheeks. I recall playing a lot of escape-the-room games because they were something I could do with just one free hand.

I recall the surgery to get my wisdom teeth out. I was out for a bit, then I woke up and could feel them chipping away at my teeth and sucking the broken shards out. Then I went under for a bit, but I remember them removing the IV anesthetic. Immediately afterward I stood up and started walking to the recovery room, which freaked out the nurse and doctor who were positive I was going to fall on my face. They escorted me to the room, where I sat perfectly lucid for the required time frame. Some other guy who had the same operation was *out of his mind* and falling out of his chair the whole time. When it was time for me to leave, they insisted I use a wheelchair, but I was fine (god damn it!) and continued to freak people out when I stood and walked under my own power.

I got ibuprofen for the next week.

Whatever they used in the IV though clearly was not performing optimally in my body though.

I remember having my wisdom teeth out--early November. I really liked the narcotics I got--whatever they were (it was 25+ years ago...), but when they ran out, I quit. Still, I don't remember getting loopy on them. Or watching movies/playing computer games. I do remember that the first solid meal I had after the surgery was Thanksgiving. Yum!

Am I the only person ever NOT to have had major discomfort and/or loopiness after having my wisdom teeth removed? I just got a local anesthetic, no laughing gas, the dentist yanked and pulled for while, then I went home with some painkillers I never needed - and hydrocodone just doesn't seem to get me giggly, so there wasn't any point in taking the pills at all. I even took a trip by airplane two or three days later, and had no ill effects. My mouth did feel "tight" for a few days, and I shied away from solid foods per doctor's orders, but really, everything was pretty tame for what I always understood to be the most harrowing surgery young people are commonly exposed to.

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth out because they were impacted. I got local anesthetic because I didn't want to pay another $300 for general and I don't have any dentistry-related fears (it was cool when they were sewing up the incisions, I could hear the sound of them suturing, but the surgeon had the worst bedside manner ever). I feel cheated though, because all they prescribed me for recovery was some 400mg Motrin. I took like two and then gave up on them. I just spent two or three days in my apartment, hiding my swollen monster-face from the world while I finished both Kingdom Hearts 2 and Jonathan Strange.

But I might need the other two out and it'll be by a different dentist if I do, so maybe I'll get the good shit this time!

Ditto. I just had Novocaine for the surgery and whatever pain killer they prescribed me for afterwards upset my stomach, so I just used Tylenol.

The person who commented on American obsession with germs and hygiene on the last thread got ripped a new one but this thread desperately needs a British opinion - Step Away From The Dentist's Chair!!

When I see the hell you guys put yourselves through with braces and bleaching and goodness knows what else trying to make your teeth look whiter than anything in nature and meet some film star standard it boggles my mind. Save your money, save the pain and just learn to love what nature gave you. Slightly imperfect teeth give character (one of mine is a fraction out of line but that's just me!)

At least they are giving you decent drugs, mind - friends who visit the states come back with horror stories of how customs will confiscate even everyday over the counter painkillers because they're controlled substances over there!

Good comics though - but needs more raptors!

Ditto. I just had Novocaine for the surgery and whatever pain killer they prescribed me for afterwards upset my stomach, so I just used Tylenol.
I was unconscious for the actual surgery itself (the last thing I remember was thinking it was odd that my blood was going up a tube away from me when it felt more like the stream was going towards my arm), and in and out of consciousness for most of the rest of that day (I have a few really weird things I wrote during that time, mostly misspelled simple words (which I never do while sentient) and insistences that I was fully aware). But after that I was totally fine. It definitely wasn't the multiple-day affair most people claim.
