0862: "Let Go"

Postby Mattman » Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:59 am UTC

Image

Alt-text: After years of trying, I broke this habit in a day by decoupling the action and the neurological reward. I set up a simple 30-second delay I had to wait through, in which I couldn't do anything else, before any new page or chat client would load (and only allowed one to run at once). The urge to check all those sites magically vanished--and my 'productive' computer use was unaffected.

Ha ha. This comic was a good one.

I also hope I did everything right here. This is my first time!

Those are often my exact thoughts! Great comic!
Also, how could one implement the 30 second delay?

The 30-second delay sounds like a wonderful idea. I was just feeling depressed about how bad my procrastination has gotten.

Randall could sell software that does this and become a millionaire. has this been his plan all along?

Trust me, implementing a 30 second delay is like pissing in the wind. Trace conditioning, anyone?

Rats will press a lever hundreds of times to get a single drop of alcohol. A more effective strategy would be to set up an automatic electric shock when you attempt to access Facebook or other time-wasting sites. Or you could set up a redirect to Goatse.

Why is the title text long, serious, and boring?

I wonder if there's a Chrome extension that can do this. It sounds magical.

...... Thank you Randall. I'm going to try using a full 60 second delay to disincentivize my non-productive computer usage. Hopefully it's what I've been looking for: a cure treatment accommodation way to deal with my ADD. Ritalin just isn't enough sometimes.

Oh, and I really like the strip. It's funny.

30 seconds is a long time. That's just enough time to think, which is exactly what I'm not doing if I'm going to Reddit. Also I don't like to feel that much like a lab mouse.

I don't know of a system that has a 30 second delay, but you can block yourself out:

I would buy the delay software in a heartbeat.

You should make it available.

makes me almost want to go back to using chromium... but I think a self-inflicted 30 seconds would probably work too...

I have problems with time-management software. I mean well when I install them, but when they insist that I wait/take a break, I just override them with my admin password.

ooh my most intense 'get out of my head' moment ever!
Just yesterday I decided to ban myself to 30mins facebook a day and I'm reeeeaaaaly struggling!
Chrome thingo looks good but my procrastination-subconsious is sneaky and would just open a different browser.
Any more foolproof options anyone??

Huge "get out of my head" moment here too. I've been struggling with this stuff for ten years.

I've had some luck using Freedom, an app that shuts off all internet access for a specified amount of minutes (leaves local network traffic alone though):

What a brilliant idea. While I think electric shock would be the most effective way to go, I'm gonna settle for time-management software.

Now...just need to spend 2 hours finding something I'm happy with. That doesn't count as procrastinating, does it...? ;)

The secret to avoiding staying online too much looking at pointless things like Facebook is a chair that hurts your bum after you sit down on it for more than 30 mins.
A virus walks into a bar, the bartender says "We don't serve viruses in here".
The virus replaces the bartender and says "Now we do!"

For those using Firefox check out Leechblock: http://www.proginosko.com/leechblock.html
It's free and it works great for me (currently trying to write up my PhD thesis).

And I have no personal gain from recommending this program, it has just helped me a lot!

I forget that some people use computers for work, but was it a good idea for companies to allow access to things like Facebook AT WORK???

For those of you using the command-line it is simple to implement:

Code: Select all

$ sleep 30; lynx http://www.facebook.com

Yes I know Facebook is "not cool enough" to support that browser.

Wikipedia is The Problem.

It's a really useful reference for a lot of my work, which saves lots of time.

It's also a really bad way to waste time reading interesting but pointless stuff.

How do you solve that one?

I don't post very often, but thank you for this...and thank you Randall...I've been suffering from this so bad lately it's almost addiction. I can't focus at all on anything, my school work's lacking, and I just waste my precious time. I sit down entirely set on doing my work then I hit a moment of writer's block and look something up but think it's be a good time to also check my facebook while I'm doing it, then check twitter, then check articles, then check one or two browser games I play just to see how it's going, and this consumes hours and it's truly messing with productivity in my life. Btw if you guys know anything stronger than StayFocusd, let me know haha. Ciao

This is me... every day! Can you tell by the way I lurk in the fora without ever posting?

Thought I'd register (hi!) and post because I think I know a relatively simple way of doing this in FF, just with better javascripting skills than my own (which are mostly lacking...). I would have thought a delay could be programmed in just a few lines of code, then use Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/) to run it on whichever pages you choose?
