what is that in the bathtub?

Kidneys, maybe?

I'm sure that this comic is hilarious...if only I understood what's going on.

The title text is in turn a reference to this.

I literally just heard this legend for the first time about 4 days ago in English class. It was an example, since we were writing our own urban legends.

By the way, exactly the same thing happened with the trochee comic as well.

No, no, instead of stealing his kidneys and leaving him in a bathtub full of ice, she stole his ice and left him in a bathtub full of kidneys.

No, see, that's the normal setup. You "normally" wake up in a tub of ice with your kidney missing. He woke up in a tub of kidneys with his ice missing.

Also, teelo, NOT COOL. Posting "herp, derp, what's the template again" just to have the first post. (He didn't say "herp, derp" or use those words exactly, but it was a once-sentence placeholder that was to that affect) Seriously, when I click on the thread, I expect to see a discussion, or a comment that starts one. Not some stupid shit you came up with just so you could be F1RST. When you did come up with a comment for the post, it's some stupid shit that in no way will contribute to the value of this thread. If you don't have something worthwhile to post, then DON'T make the first post!

So, funny. You made me laugh. Very well done.

I have no idea what the AAA club reference means. AA spelled wrong?

It's a mixture of two "morning after" urban legends - the kidney/bath/ice one and the one-night-stand/"welcome to aids club" one.

They're gnome-sized waterskins for the AAA's corp of roadside engineers.

"AAA-AAA-AAA-AAA!!!" he's chanting, not screaming.

The AAA is also the American Association of Anatomists. I assumed that he woke up in a tub of kidneys, only because it was amusing to think that she took his ice instead of his kidney.

But when they drop and die

Helps not the primal fault;
It rains into the sea
And still the sea is salt."

Well written article. I worked with a team one summer. I was an unimportant member of the team. It was mid 1980's. The blood test for AIDS was being developed. We were also working on motivations of spreading the disease. We came up with the ones in the article.
The feeling in SF, California at the time was a little like a war zone. People were dieing. People were sick and people were frightened. The hospital staff were frightened. It is still a frightening thing. Use protection, Everyone!
Strange, that. I think that taking his ice and leaving him with a tub of kidneys is funny. The AIDS thing. Not so much.

Still; It could be AA spelled wrong. American Association of Anatomists? That works, too. Of course, the simple answer may work, also.
AAA is for the Automobile Association. She was being nice. It is nice to have a roadside assistance card when one is needed.

Hmmm, but do they also offer roadside assistance? I wonder if the kidneys are from car crash fatalities.

I can't recall the last time it took me this long to "get" an xkcd.

However, once I did, this cheesy, simple joke actually had me laughing out loud the way that people did before they started using that phrase to denote mild amusement.

That's what I though, he woke up going "AAA!" so now he's in the AAA club!

Totally missed the "woke up in a bath of ice with his kidneys missing" reference - I thought they were hearts! Then again, I've never heard that urban legend...

I just like that there's a party banner in panel 1 that says "PARTY!" The next time I throw a party I want to get one of those so that anyone who happens to be looking at a 6'x14' area of the party has the visual cue to know what's going on.

Well she *did* save him from alcohol abuse.... although, I suspect she might have had to use drugged orange juice to do that. "There's vodka in it, honest."

I was just thinking how I wanted white beret guy to be in another strip and now he is, what a coincidence.

Somehow it seems really fitting that white beret guy would be who this happened to and I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if it had been the plain character. I suppose this means that I've developed some level of attachment to a bunch of stick figures. Weird.
Warning: Post may contain lame, overused reference.

Being on the other side of the Atlantic, cultural differences made me jump to all the wrong conclusions on this one.

AAA normally means Amateur Athletics Association to me, but in a XKCD context my first thought was the Association of Autonomous Astronauts. Neither of these guesses helped me work out what that bathtub was full of, but my third guess (KLF side project "Advanced Acoustic Armaments") led me to assume this was a wildly obscure, mildly amusing but uncharacteristically scatological joke about brown noise as party music.

Ah, the final panel makes a lot more sense after reading this thread. At first I thought that beret guy and the girl had got drunk and decided it would be a good idea to kidnap a load of people and remove their kidneys.
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

My take on the AAA club thing is that, instead of giving him AIDS, she signed him up for a membership of the AAA, placing upon him the burden of making monthly payments to the club. What a cold bitch :O

AAA is definitely "Triple A" Automobile club - the "roadside assistance" in the title text is the giveaway.
