Title: “The Street View van isn't going to find out anything Google won't already know from reading my email.”

http://xkcd.com/935/

I’m…not entirely sure what this one is trying to say.

Link to explanation of SSN in comic.

I don't know either... and I don't know HOW Randall got my social security number, either...

I don't normally completely misunderstand XKCD comics.
But when I do, I normally am wondering if Randall was just making a troll comic, or whether there was actually a point.

They must be references to movies, probably. Or books. Or games.

Lol jpk.

I think it's pretty clear: Google's servers contain everything about you that there is to know... exaggerating slightly, even the guy who drives the flippin' Street View van has enough data to deduce, say, based on facial recognition and some software that hasn't made it to the labs yet, everything about you. Including the contents of your pockets right now.

Just a bit of reasonably well-founded paranoia about our new Googly overlords. Whom, I hasten to say, I welcome. Wholeheartedly. Without reservation.

You are missing the most important things - one, Babe Ruth is a Time Lord, and two, he parked his TARDIS on the Third Moon of (Endor?).... Not to mention there exists at least one Time Lord other than the Master and the Doctor, apparently.

Well, yeah, what do you think that last finale was all about? We have a recipe for making a timelord now... so, given an infinite franchise, we know that someone even lazier and less capable of maintaining the show than Moffat will grab at that branch, and there will be a new timelord... and since there will be, there is. QED.

I feel the same way about the people who post on Missed Connections. First off, aren't they banking on people trawling the section regularly just in case someone they (the reader) didn't even bother to notice in the first place posted about them (the reader, again)? Which is pretty much not ever going to happen unless they (still the reader) are some kind of severely desperate loser? Like even moreso than they (the writer) are for posting there? ... I don't remember what if anything my second point was, but I think that's all that needed to be said anyway.

EDIT: I just realized my use of "they" was incredibly ambiguous so I added some stuff.

My favorite "Chance Meetings" ad ever: "[SOME_OFFICE_BUILDING], [SOME_DATE]: on the elevator. Our eyes met. Coffee?"

I noticed it because I was working in SOME_OFFICE_BUILDING at the time. Notice: not even an approximate time when this would have happened...

So, how did Randall do the blacking out half the image thing? Is there a server-side script so that if the image is embedded in a page, it gives the user one version, but if they request the image directly, it gives a different version?

Classic Randall. I love these types of comics.

This requires understanding the “Missed Connections” term

I really didn't get this comic, so I had to read the forum on it. I guess I was not aware of the "Missed Connections" genre, wherein someone posts a message describing an interaction they had in passing with another person in hopes that the other person reads it and they reconnect. But now that I know what that is, it is funny.

Does this actually work (more than a statistically vanishingly small percentage of the time)?

P.S. Google, you missed the two dimes in my jacket pocket. I had $2.29 in change at the time. Epic FAIL. I'm switching to Bing.

1. What are "personals"?
2. What are "missed connections" in this context?
3. Who is "you" supposed to be?
4. Who is "me" supposed to be?
5. What is an UDP packet?
6. What is a cisco router?
7. What is the 45.170/16 block?
8. Who is "violent J"?
9. What is the relationship between each pair that we're supposed to see?

I go to a small university (about 1500 students or so on campus... I went to a bigger high school). Here, everyone started using likealittle.com. I think it's more effective, especially when it is split into universities instead of cities.

With such a small pool of people, everyone knows exactly who this is:
"Blonde guy liked at Cafeteria
I love the way you talk with your hands... It's so sexy. But you're always surrounded by girls... I would never have a chance with you :("

And everyone knows he spends a lot of time on likealittle... and xkcd... crap, he's going to find this and kill me in my sleep.

Hmm, apparently what I thought was an intentional part of the joke on Randall's part was just a joke being played on my by the vagaries of fate and/or the internet, since I can't seem to reproduce it now that I've cleared my cache. This is what I saw when I first loaded the page:

Isn't that the most awesomely well-timed example of packet loss you've ever seen? I swear, it's not photo-shopped. I really did only get half of the image, and it cut off right after the line about a confused UDP packet. The internet is kind of flakey where I am, so it's not completely implausible, but it is pretty hilariously unlikely.

I think this is one of the great things about the 'Net: it demonstrates how weird people are. There was a genre of supposedly "subversive" art in the last century that was all about exposing the nominal perversities of uptight middle class people, and I can't help but think what would happen if one of those guys woke up in this future:

"I had my characters eating raw meat on stage as a way of showing the absurdity of their prim and proper lives. Audiences were outraged by my transgressive vision!"

"Yo dude, you wanna see this YouPorn video of that guy gettin' done by a horse?"

11. If I just stole it, why am I on the hood instead of driving it the normal way?
12. What's a Juggalo?
13. Who's Nancy Pelosi?
14. Who's George Herman Babe Ruth?

(Yes I'm serious about it. I'm not American and haven't heard of these names and expressions. But I'm glad many here are confused too.)

The 45.170/16 block refers to the 45/8 ipv4 subnet that was (mostly) returned by Interop back to ARIN. Not sure what the reason is for the .170 though.

10. Wienermobile = Automobile shaped like a "hot-dog in a bun" used as a promotional tool for the Oscar Mayer brand of hot dogs.
11. IDK
12. I'd try Googling that
13. Nancy Pelosi = Radical Left-Wing Liberal Democrat representative to the US House of Representatives from California who was the Speaker of the House.
14. Babe Ruth = Legendary great American Baseball Icon from the early-20th century.

Nancy Pelosi was the (Democrat) head (speaker? not sure what the English term is) of the US House of Representatives until January (then a Republican took over).
I am not sure, but maybe that missed connection is a reference to this abominable and ridiculous FOX article: Obama's Hip-Hop BBQ Didn't Create Jobs ... Nancy Pelosi attended Barrack Obama's 50th birthday party. Where one of the numerous other guests was Jay-Z, a hip hopper (who did not perform anything there). And a little bit of hip hop was played among lots of other music.

Wienermobile ... I was thinking it might be a car that sells sausages / hot dogs, but Google image search suggests it's something more specific: http://www.google.de/search?q=Wienermobile&tbm=isch

What's interesting is that when I traceroute anything in that block, the trace doesn't even make it out of my state. It's like the whole block has gone dark, which is odd.
