There really should be a way to alert others if the topic was already created :P .

Well, this was first.

I was really hoping it was an oboe, but I don't know what the punchline (punchimage?) of that would have been.

That makes sense.

I'm still not convinced the confusion would last two hours, though. If anyone wants to test this empirically, please do not mention my name as the one who suggested it.

Yep, Black Hat Guy doing what he does. I'm pretty sure that 'best' doesn't enter into it.

Is BHG evil, or simply a trickster?

I lean toward thinking he is a trickster.

This is in pretty bad taste; people have been killed from escalators malfunctioning and hitting reverse, and other stunts like the one in this comic.

What's also in bad taste is that I've been reading XKCD for however many years, and it took this to prompt me to sign up to the forums. Unimpressed.

For those who are curious, the escalators in question are probably the DC Metro: Wheaton station escalators.

But in panel 9 he follows BHG down as the couple behind them reaches the top. Then they seem to be watching the beginning of the mess in the final panel.

I used to have a chin-up bar, and I used it to annoy my cat. I put it in the doorway to my bedroom at about 15cm high so she had to jump over it. Interestingly enough every day when I raised the bar (ha!) a couple of centimeters she kept on jumping over it, even though at some point she could just walk underneath it. I think I trained my cat to be a circus lion!

I stopped doing it when my mom tripped over it for the gazillionth time.

If you don't have a chin-up bar, you can also accomplish this by taking one of those wheeled luggage carts at the airport onto an escalator. You know, the ones that have warning signs on both the escalators and the carts themselves telling you not to do it? I know this because I once ended up behind the fucking moron who decided to take one on anyway, got it stuck at the top, and very narrowly avoided causing the exact scene pictured in the comic.

After he managed to get it unstuck and we got off, I said to him, "Gee, if only they had some kind of warning signs somewhere to let you know that was a bad idea. Fucking moron." One of the very few times I've been moved to call a fucking moron a fucking moron to his face, consequences be damned (as opposed to saying it in my head or under my breath, which probably happens dozens of times per day).

Unfortunately, many people defy warning signs out of the desire to defy authority. That is why I think that more warning signs should be specific on why they are warning people not to do things. To use the cart example, it could say "Warning: Carts taken on Escalator may become jammed". Or a no smoking sign at a gas station could say "No Smoking: Explosion risk".

He is facetious. That is how I would sum him up. He does good and bad depending on how you look at him. Remember when he cut that double parking car in half. That was good? Maybe. However, he has also done "evil" things too. Like his work with crossbow.

It reminds me when they opened a new shopping-center in a newly erected house (so no-one knew the vincinity). Some ten minutes before they opened the center the escalators leading directly to the doors started. People stepped on the escalators just to be jammed into the crowd of people stopped by the still closed doors. And no-one wanted to go down the other escalators so they didn't lose their prior places in the row.

The joke about the blonde got stuck because the escalators suddenly stopped came to my head I read about this part in our local paper. There was a lot of shouting about who was responsible for this and so on... By the light of this comic I think the facility manager of this hous must have worn a black hat.

apart from the idea, I just loved the way he drew a person looking back. I mean, can you imagine a *circle* looking back? But I`m sure as hell that this circle is looking back.

Nice to know that sociopathic behavior (resulting in large amounts of delay, inconvenience, and possible serious injury - and that's just in this case) is still considered amusing in these quarters.

Ok... I normally enjoy your comics... so much so that I've got your RSS feed bookmarked and I obsessively check every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evening before going to bed... but this comic is downright outstanding. It's so good that I had to register for the forums to express how profoundly hilarious it is. Bravo, sir. I award full marks and present you with 1 (one) internets.

Just for some perspective, a 70 meter escalator is roughly 10-12 stories tall at its highest. "Falling down the stairs" for that far is pretty likely to be lethal.

Not that I think it would be less lethal, but I believe the height is about 40 meters. If the longest escalator is 70m long he means the hypotenuse. I'm guessing the angle is about 35 degrees so the leg (or height of the escalator) should be roughly 40m.

Still, with about 6-7 stories it can't be a nice landing...

Edit: Hmm, it could be you weren't talking about a 70m tall escalator at all. It all comes down to how high you think one floor of the store would be :D

In a local supermarket, there are escalators specifically designed to allow trolleys on. Going down, occasionally you get someone who reaches the end, then pauses to decide whether to go left or right. Or scratch their ear, or just catch their breath after the exhilarating ride. One day, my heavily laden trolley, unstoppedly approaching from behind is going to crush them against the Ferrero Rocher display.

It won't be pretty.

I had this same idea, EXACTLY THE SAME, three days ago.
GOOMHR.

On the comic: yes, that would be pretty funny. Also you'd probably kill dozens of people and severely injure a few hundreds. You might as well get some explosives into a train or a subway.

(Cl)assholes' inspirations seem to be somewhat predictable. The following was uploaded in 2008; apparently a local cellphone network operator had a motto "no net can stop you", which inspired this (understanding of the language not required, Flash video): http://www.stream.cz/uservideo/60895-bordel-v-metru-aneb-smrt-reklamam

My reaction was similar to a couple of people above me here: Creating a mass panic and disabeling emergency-measurements? In the best case it's like lighting smoke-bombs in a filled stadium and in the worst case it's a creative form of terrorism. I actually found it horrible.

Anyone care to explain to me why exactly this is funny?
