0980: "Money"

"There, I showed you it."

1:1 scale

Seems particularly detailed. No wonder it's up so late in the day; even I'm up to create the topic thread. Hooray for me, I guess. I've finally become that guy I hate.

It's pretty much the same as Randy's blog on Radiation, but with dollar representations, instead of sievert(s?). (link to chart)

The cynical side of me is wondering why this advertised in the xkcd store before it was even uploaded! Still, with the amount of people who register on the forum just to say "I want this on a t-shirt/poster/mug!" I guess it just makes good business sense to have the product ready to ship the moment someone feels like making a snap purchase. This is why advance copies of my magnum opus "Business Secrets of the Pharaohs" are available on amazon.com. I'm up to chapter 2 already!

If anything, this will serve as a handy crude tool for anyone wishing to make an impressive visualisation in their economics class. On another note, I love graphs that have clearly taken an awful long time to create (Zach Weiner, take note)

Quick Game: spot the typos before M. Munroe makes sneaky fixes for all of them! As I'm getting in the nondenominational Christmas spirit, the winner gets an early Xmas present: an orange and a clip round the ear (and will be damned grateful about it).
Away, you scullion! you rampallion! You fustilarian! I'll tickle your catastrophe.

Is the Average CEO pay mislabeled? Should one of them be for 1965?

...I'm noticing a lot of typos (captions that are most likely mistypes, missing or inadvertently added ,000s, that sort of thing). It's making it hard to understand in some parts... KF

It's Saudi Aramco, not Armaco.

And yes, those guys are richer than you can imagine.

Seems to be a typo in Worker/CEO pay comparison.

Typical 2007 CEO pay is in twice.

Nice. This must have been a huge amount of work.

Did notice in the Dollar section, that Typical 2007 CEO Pay is listed twice. I'm sure the smaller sum of $490.31 is for 1965, but just wanted to drop a line in case you make any revisions.

This is a disturbingly detailed description of Murphy's Law, in an eerily overwhelming fashion. As they say(albeit incorrectly) things can go wrong in so many ways, but right in only so many ways!

I think the one on the left is supposed to be for 1965 and the right for 2007.

You are carrying:

- a still unfed and very hungry hippo
- broadsword of +5 ridiculousness stained with the blood of the undead souls
- a stetson Resistol, cuz stetson Resistols are cool.

Wow. Just wow. This must have taken him more than just this weekend to do. I wonder how long. Also he's surely enjoying some sleep right now, no wonder it's so late. So once Randall wakes up, I'm sure he's ready for criticism... fix these typos :D

Also make this a gigantic poster on your store. Include on the poster version a representation of the poster's cost in the Dollars section.

Another complaint: "Who wants to be a millionaire" first aired in the UK in 1998, not 1988.

This is outstanding - an amazing view of how much money is spent, and how it compares to everything else. As usual with giant charts of the past, excellent work!

I expected to see xkcd.com/558 slid in there somewhere - am I missing it?

Is there a (officially sanctioned) downloadable version of this comic? Or an alternate viewer? I want to read it but the viewer seems to be breaking every browser I throw at it (Safari, FF, and Chrome).

Wow.

Is anyone else having difficulty getting to the sources page?

This is overwhelming, to say the least. But I'll admit, what's got me most curious is the interface. Anyone care to share what was used to create the interface with the zooming and panning?

Judging by the source code, it appears to be PanoJS ( http://www.dimin.net/software/panojs/ )

Can anyone make out what is supposed to be under the "Millions" label? http://xkcd.com/980/huge/#x=-4334&y=-6444&z=6 (It looks like 2 things are cut off at least partially)

Combined net worth of 1,210 billionaires.... shouldn't that be in the $1.21T+ range, or was that logged after some mysterious market crash?

It's amazing how difficult it is to wrap one's mind around the scale even when it's all laid out side-by-side like that.

It'd be really cool if someone took this and put it into this sort of format: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/525347

typos:

In Billions:
under Federal Spending, "Defecit" should be "Deficit"
under US Household Income, "Upper milddle incomes" should be "Upper middle incomes"
under US Household Income: State taxes, "disproprtionately" should be "disproportionately"
under Largest corporations by market cap, "Saudi Armaco" should be "Saudi Aramco"
"Unclaimed US treasury bonds" is misaligned
not sure if the blocks under the Economic Vortex are supposed to be labeled
above US GDP, "bev erage" should be "beverage"
above US GDP, "Oil & gas" is misaligned
other misalignments

In Trillions:
"producitvity" should be "productivity"
the chart with the timeline is unlabeled

The total cost of the wars for US seems to be a bit off.
The rapper value of J. K. Rowling is probably not the one displayed (by counting the orange squares, it should probably be about $82,000).

What a wonderful chart! I'll buy one for the wall in a heartbeat.

Heh, and the comment about Murphy above is quite appropriate.

I noticed that the prices for the kindle ("$79") and the kindle keyboard + 3g ("$139") are the prices with special offers, which means subsided by advertising. I'd much rather either see them at actual cost ($109/$189), or at least show the advertizing subsidized portion ghosted as on other areas. Perhaps labeled as 'price without selling soul to corporations' or similar.

It'd be nice to get a revised version 2.0 before it goes to poster, but like I said, I'm in.

The number for the interstate highway project seems incorrect, or at least it doesn't agree with the graphic or the assertion that it was the most expensive public works project in history.

"US Interstate Highway System" is counted wrong. The number doesn't represent the number of billions.

But really, this is an amazing chart.

Reaction of xkcd fan: "Wow! This must have taken so much time, it's no wonder the comic is late!"

Reaction of xkcd hater: "This comic is so completely worthless, it's amazing that Randall should spend so much time in it!"

Reaction of both: tl;dr

Billions plate covers a few items on the right and a couple notes before that are stacked atop the billion ticks.

Just created a forum login to note, as others are, that there seem to have been various amount captioning errors.

I'm especially spotting them up in the $Billion section. In particular, I saw several instances where one amount, such as $1,900,000,000, was the number given for several different amounts which clearly did not match that number.

In the section covering oil and insurance tax breaks and lobbying, to the right of US healthcare spending, $1,900,000,000 is given for "Total annual tax breaks to 5 largest oil companies" (matches visual amount) but also for "US annual oil and gas subsidies", "Ethanol subsidies", and "Combined annual profits of 10 largest health insurance companies."

For another example, see "Eurozone bailout fund", captioned as $194+ billion, but the visual display is clearly more like $1,080 B. One of them must be wrong, and I'm guessing the former. I'm assuming there are more errors like this, as I've only browsed it for a short time.

Most egregious, as somebody just pointed out, is the combined net worth of the world's billionaires - it must be greater than 1210 x $1B each, so it can't possibly be $334B. The depicted amount is $4.5Trillion.

Hope these can get fixed; I love the chart and am intending to order one.

Excellent work. Don't see this mentioned yet, so: "v presidential campaign funding" should likely be "2004 presidential campaign funding".

It works on my Firefox, however I would also like a zoomed in version (aka readable textsize) for download since I like to save infographs like this on my hdd.
Does anybody know a method to get the whole picture at a specific zoom point without manually fitting the tiles back together?

There is a section on U.S. spending on wars. On the left side of that you have WWI, the Spanish American War, and the Civil War. it looks like the labels got shifted upwards. It appears that WWI and Spanish American war are pointing to the same section, and Civil War is pointing at what should be Spanish American War.

And the monkey.

It's hard to pick nits over something this massive, but his lowest-scale zinger point is that a meal at McDonalds costs less than beans and rice made at home, and that's bullshit. An hour of shopping can give you two weeks worth of food, which divides down to two minutes per meal, and cooking is just letting the beans soak overnight, putting the beans in a crock pot with some (different) water, putting the rice in a rice cooker, and pouring both onto a serving dish. If that takes more than ten minutes of your time, you're doing it wrong.

The thing that stood out most for me is that if the Federal government didn't make any mistakes with payments ($125,000,000,000).
They could almost pay for to send every US child to university ($127,610,000,000).

Also would have like to see a few more numbers from http://www.usdebtclock.org/ worked into the chart.

I know people have mentioned there are a few typos (to be expected), but I wanted to mention two in particular so they wouldn't be missed and can hopefully be corrected.

* Under "US Household Income" the label on the left says "Upper milddle incomes".
* The US interstate highway system is labeled as costing "$165,970,000,000" but looking at the boxes, it looks like it should actually be "$465,970,000,000". (I noticed that one since the project was specifically mentioned in the things learned while researching the chart).

Overall, though, this is an amazing chart!
