Secondary joke: "To compensate for this, I plan to spend 2013 doing nothing but talking about Mayans. My relationships with my friends and family may not fare well."

I remember reading some "Mayan Calendar" "literature" that claimed the Mayans revered "the four directions". Apparently, the author thought the Mayans were Plains Indians - didn't know that they live on hills. Their directionals derive from "uphill" and "downhill". Oops.

Isn't 2012 a leap year, meaning that Randall forgot a day?

I've made that joke a few times before. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it next semester. :D

Yes, everybody will abruptly stop talking about Mayans when the devastating gamma rays from the galactic center incinerate all our vocal cords.

Or, more accurately, when everybody except Mel Gibson stops talking about the Mayans.

It's the second now, which makes the comic correct. If it were the first, then there would be a missing day (356 days from dec 31, 355 after jan 1, and 354 more from jan 2)

I feel like the artwork is very retro in this one; definitely feels like some of the earlier comics.

Code: Select all

Foxpro says
?{12/21/2012}-{1/2/2012}
354

353 might be better with the phrasing chosen.

You're right! And too it's almost as if they predicted they year when scammers would try to get money from guillible people by lying about nonexistent Mayan "predictions"! :D

Other than knowing the germ theory of disease and how to defeat the Spanish and how to save their violent and hierarchical civilization from substantial regression long before the Spanish even showed up it's like they knew everything!

I'm preaching to the choir here, but there's a handy website debunking 2012 ...

As a lifelong Porsche enthusiast, I make this mistake all the time. The year has 365 days, the car was the 356. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who switches these numbers up like other people switch up 52 cards in a deck and 50 states in the country.

Oh.

But then I realized he might be counting down to some day in the middle/end of December which was the exact date of the end of the Mayan calendar. So maybe he didn't make that same mistake I do.

Incidentally, I can count in Mayan, and I can write out their whole calendar using the odd base system they used, but I never actually counted out to when their cycle switches from "2" to "3" which is later this year.

You know, Mayan elders and experts have come out saying "You guys know that's not what the tablet says, right?"

The world could certainly die this year. it could certainly die on Dec 21, 2012. But there's not a significantly higher chance, nor because the Mayans said so. Probably more because of people who believe it, if anything.

Although every tiny little trouble (+ the 2012 presidential elections) will now be interpreted as "What if it's part of the prophecy?!?!?!?"

But people won't stop talking about it. It's going to play out like this:

Dec 21, 2012: We're all gonna die! Ah!! Help!!! No!!! Mayans!!!! *burning cars, people going "screw it", people acting insane and a media field day*
Dec 22, 2012: *crickets chirp*
Dec 23, 2012: Some Troll Online: "Oh wait, guys, looks like we translated the tablet wrong. It's gonna happen December 21, 2013.
Mayan Expert: ...really?...
Mayan Hack: ...Wha?... Oh... Yea! Sure! Next year! More book sales for me!

Prophecies are like the false market reports of life; some profit and a lot of people lose a ton. The sad thing is that quite a few people will ruin (or lose)r their life because of this hoax... Natural Selection or vicious lies...?

Eh. This year is the perfect excuse to go insane.

I think I'll take the day off on Dec. 21, dress up as a spooky zombie Mayan and chase people downtown.

I think it's pretty damn funny that the world is scheduled to end on the day after my birthday. I intend to spend December 21, 2012 with a bowl of popcorn and a mug of hot cocoa, watching the boob tube and the Interwebs for stories of stupid people doing stupid things and nursing my birthday hangover. This will be even more entertaining than Y2K. :-D

Incidentally, the Mayans will be remembered long after December 21 as the assholes who were indirectly responsible for all those stupid things that the stupid people will do that day, all because they were too lazy to run the calendar out to the end of time (or at least to the end of the existence of humanity).

I link everyone starting about the Maya's and the end of the world to this image: http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ls7ubuc3ao1qeawdho1_400.jpg, announce to ignore them if they further continue on the subject, and do.

The only time anyone may bother me again about them is on December 21st when the world still hasn't ended. After that it's shut-up time again.

Edit: why the hell can't I use [url] here...

Okay, thanks. Still pointless imo: my post needed to be approved. If it contained spam links it wouldn't have gotten trough anyway.
(I edited instead of replying because it's offtopic, I'm not sure how much people care about that here so I'm playing on safe lol).

Edit3: And I hate edit counters like the one on my post :/ I can get if there is a 'last edited on' when I edited more than 5 minutes after posting, but you don't need to know every grammar mistake I corrected or sentence I rewrote. I'd almost edit my post 20 times with nothing just to make the counter irrelevant.
(In fact, phpBB is not quite my favorite anyway, but whatever).

Only by people who lack the analytical skills to place the blame where it belongs: with the stupid people themselves, and with the greedy/stupid people perpetuating the myth.

On Y2K I made a point to be out of town for new year's eve and day -- not because I thought anything cataclysmic was actually going to happen, but because I live in a stupider-than-average city that has trouble keeping the power running on a good day. So I was a bit concerned about how the stupider portion of the population would react to any minor disruption; I thought that if there was anyplace in the world that would see panic and chaos because two traffic lights were out and an ATM was broken, it would be my town. So I bugged out for the night, and while nothing like that ended up happening, I still very much stand by that decision from a risk/benefit perspective. I may very well do the same thing for 12/21/12, since I feel that neither the world in general nor my town in particular have gotten any less stupid in the intervening twelve years.

Proof that we will all fall prey to large sea snails on December 21, 2012:

The above mentioned date marks the start of a new b'ak'tun.
The word b'ak'tun is clearly Klingon.
The Klingon phrase nubaq tun means "Tun terminate/discontinue us."
A tun is a large sea snail.

QeD

I was initially gonna make a joke comparing the calendar shift to the changing of months, and then a Y2K parallel, but I figured that this was - for lack of other desirable qualities - a bit more original.

The end of the long count Mayan calendar is an important date on the Mayan calendar. All the important dates on my calendar are reasons to party. So where's the party? There should be a big celebration at one of those Mayan pyramids with REM playing It's the end of the world. Of course we could all just act like we are too cool for the Mayan calendar and ignore it. That's way more fun.

In my research years ago, the approximate date (in a book written before this was a fad) was closter to the end of February. Also, the sect that focused on divining listed 20 long periods instead of 13. (i.e. calendar goes to 20.13.13.13.13 instead of 13.13.13.13.13 (that's an example and may not have the correct number of periods.)) Lastly, most people say that after 13.13.13.13.13 wouln't be the end, just the end of that long period. the next day would be 1.0.0.0.0.0 or 1.1.1.1.1.1 (I don't think they used zeroes in dates, though they did have a zero)

Well, some people don't have to worry, because they left--or is it will leave?--in the rapture that started on May 21 last year--or was that October 21? Or was he a year off, and it will really be May 21, or 26, or maybe 27, 2012?? No fooling this time!

The current scenario has the Greeks (Atlanteans) meeting the Mayans and whatnot.

It's 12 years old.

I tend to agree with you; the Mayan civilization has made a huge contribution to our cultural heritage, and we should look on this as an opportunity to celebrate them. Unfortunately, I suppose all this end of the world stuff has made us all rather blasé over the date; in fact, we struggle to be as blasé as possible so that we can rub it in the faces of those who believe weird things.

So, what are you guys doing for New B'ak'tun's Eve?

Okay, I'll be Conspiracy Guy. The reason everyone is blase about the end of the world is because the government does not want to create a panic. All those people who predicted the Rapture were right, but late. The Rapture occurred in the first millenium, there were so few people worth saving, no one noticed they were gone. The reason existence continued is because the devil is letting us believe we still have a chance for Salvation and giving us false hope. December 21 will be the day the devil pops up and says "Ha ha, fooled you.".
