There was no comic #404, and Randall started indexing at 1 instead of 0; this is comic #999.

This is one of those rare comics whose punchline was actually anticipated in the discussion of the previous comic. Nevertheless, congratulations on a kilocomic, and here's to the coming kibicomic milestone. May there be many more to come.

Aside: Why have we all been waiting with bated breath for the ten cubed comic, while nobody paid any attention when comic number seven cubed came out, or even mentioned that the title of that comic is also divisible by seven?
Look at me, still talking when there's Science to do.

I picked the right day to read xkcd on a tablet. Pinch to zoom is coming in quite handy.

Thanks for the years of entertainment, and here's to many more.

Thank you Randall for at least a thousand laughs (as for some I laughed again when I reread them).
I'm not completely worthless; I can be used as a bad example.

Was using jsmath really necessary who ever did that? My work (if you can call it that!) computer can't handle it, makes it takes around five minutes to load each forum page.

Thanks a lot, I couldn't not count after you said that. :P

I counted exactly 1000 - including the two big stick figures. I didn't count the skeleton, though.

According to my calculations made with ImageJ (yeah, I'm a cheater, but that's what is science and computer software are for afterall, nah? ;) ) there ARE 1000 stick figures around. However, this is a rough estimation, as area data ranges from 1 px^2 to 1492px^2 (stdev=103,9) for 1350 particles, so I might have missed a few real characters (eg. kids, small critter etc.).

Figuring out which comics each of these characters is from is the ultimate XKCD challenge.

Congratulations, Randall!

This momentous occasion (for those using base ten numbering anyway) prompted me to finally register just so I could say thanks for all the geeky laughs over the years and also to say that I'm looking forward to xkcd 2K, not to mention 1024 and 2048!

Even though I know that all the strips are on-line I still tend to save my favorites to a folder. Just the favorites mind you, not each and every one. I don't know why, I guess I'm paranoid that one day I'll wake up and the Internet will be gone or something. Anyway, being the anal retentive nerd that I am, I need to have everything lined up just so in terms of file names and this crossing into four digit territory necessitated perpending each file with the numeral 0. And boy are my fingers tired. (Not really, I know how to use a computer.) Anyway, I was surprised to find that I had saved 639 of the first 1000 so I thought you'd like to know that you're batting 0.639 in my book!

Keep up the good work.

I was wondering for some time what #1000 would be, and I wasn't disappointed :) Thanks Randall.

Thanks also to the guys already answering the 1000-stick-figures-question. But now I'm asking myself, are all of the thousand comics represented by exactly one figure ...?

No. First of all not all comics even have a figure to begin with. Secondly there's some stick figures in there that do not seem to be from any of the comics. Finally there's at least a few from the same comic. The couple with the baby for example in the bottom-left of the third zero.

Okay, I count exactly 999 human beings, and one skeleton. Although one might be a genie.

Also 1 each of: Sheep, Turtle, Squirrel, Squid(Cuttlefish?), Butterfly, Kitty. Which I started counting as characters, but ended up with 6 extra humanoids. But didn't feel like starting over.

Also some ants and computers and crap that didn't seem countable.

Got two questions:
1. Will there be a (big) poster with this one? I'd love one!
2. Even in the large image I can't read some of the captions, will there be an even-larger-resolution image?

Besides, congrats! Great work!
