Comic 1000 is not the 1000th comic

Postby Mahkoe » Mon Feb 20, 2012 10:23 pm UTC

A while ago I wrote a small shell script to download all the xkcd comics to date and noticed that there was no 404th comic. I literally started shouting obscenities out loud, causing alarm to all other members of the household. Today, I just realized that because of this sick joke, karma caused it to come back and bite the xkcd creator; the comic at http://xkcd.com/1000 intitled "1000 comics" is in fact the 999th. Shameful. Let this be a lesson to all of you.

I don't know that I'd describe comic #404 as a "sick joke"... "joke" yes, "sick" no. But regardless:
Randall Munroe wrote:A number of people objected that http://xkcd.com/1000/ was really the 999th comic, citing the absence of comic #404.

However, I have always been of the opinion that http://xkcd.com/404/ is an actual comic, if a slightly avant-garde one. I actually went out of my way to modify the 'random' button to include it, but that annoyed too many people - most of whom reasonably assumed it was a bug - and I eventually undid it.

Speaking of which, this is my new favorite comic:

I particularly like the video game.

Randall, please, do yourself a favour: don't use the word "avant-garde" anymore.

EDIT: This thread is probably the pettiest thing I have ever seen here.

In that case, I declare http://xkcd.com/bobbafettinaspeedo to be an avant-garde fan-fic contribution. If he did something esoteric, like embed something in the response header or at least make the 404 slightly different, well, that'd be more interesting

Does this really need explanation? Typing in xkcd.com/404 gives a 404 error, which casts a previously-existing condition in a new light, in an unexpected way, which some find humorous. Trying the same trick with bobbafettinaspeedo is, at best, a non sequitur.

There is a comic 404.

It's just lost.

That is to say...

Not Found.

I am happy to inform you that comic 404 has been found. Comic JK kindly uploaded it due to some confusion here: http://comicjk.com/comic.php/404

Possibly due to quotes like...
SirMustapha wrote:Randall, please, do yourself a favour: don't use the word "avant-garde" anymore.

...By which I mean; why not? Furthermore, who actually gives a shit? You know by now Randall doesn't read the forums, and asking him not to use a fairly common phrase might be a little... petty?

Anyway, thread don't belong in ICT. Moving to General.

All I see are broken file icons for each comic. Please tell me that's the joke.

I thought he said the same thing, and I couldn't figure it out. Did the boards suddenly change color? Nope, he said petty. I'm a little disappointed that the thread isn't prettier now...

I'm pretty sure if you refresh the "About" page a few times one of the explanations is the genuine one. Or you could go on the discussion forums for it, where it's pretty obvious that that's the joke. It came about because the works of David Morgan-Mar and the Comic Irregulars almost always have annotations, and they like to play about with the comic medium as well as examining the old "what is art?" question, and someone asked "Is it still a webcomic if it's just the annotations?" It's quite fun, and an easy way to get into the set of user-generated comics hosted on mezzacotta.
