It works even better if you have retractable floors with lava pools. Piranha tanks can be used if you don't have the budget.

I understood "In Accordance With Prophecy" to do similar things. But no, this is better: it's more accurate.

It must be like living in a Tennessee Williams play when they run out of kitty litter.

Why would you want to create dramatic tension? Drama, in real life, is boring and tedious.

I would find it more believeable if one of them had a cat and/or a handgun with a scar and/or an eyepatch on his or her face.

'So It Has Come To This' - that is a good phrase for all occasions. 'And this too will pass' is also said to be applicable at any time.

Nice observation Randall. I think about random crap like this all the time. Probably would have worked better as a 1023 comic, it would create instant dramatic tension for what the 1024th comic might be about.

I must remember this for when the opportunity presents itself.

Me: "So, it has come to this."

Other: "To what?"

Me: "To a chance to try something I saw on xkcd."

I could definately use this.

The trick is to evolve the resulting conversation into something intriguing and, if possible, off topic.

The drama here to me makes it look to me like they are implying that they were eating cat food due to being unable to get regular food, and now that has run out too, which means that even more extreme measures must now be taken (e.g. eat the cat).

I think, "Aaah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal," can be used in about the same way. Especially if you get that "Aaah" just like Wash because it's the perfect noise to make when something bad happened but it's nothing you're going to freak out about.

But it's good to change it up.
"I think we'll call it your grave!"
"So... it has come to this."
"Now die!"
"Oh dear God, oh no--"

Yep. About the same. Going to remember this for those people who just insist that you should respond to everything they say in a text message conversation even though they didn't say anything worth responding to.

This is true only because you live inside a soap opera. Personally, I live inside a Shakespeare play, so drama is excellent over here.

Nah. They won't eat the cat.

Cats have a way of looking at me that tells me where I am on the food chain.

Below Cat.

1. I am human.
2. The stick figures represent humans.

1. I am below real cats on the food chain.
2. Stick figures are below stick figure cats on the food chain.

That seems simple enough and problem solved.
Oh! Those stick people need some stick cat food; Now!

You assume the cat's look is not just a defence mechanism designed to make you think that you are below it on a food chain, much like some non-dangerous animals have evolved to look dangerous.

You also assume that all humans are at the same point on the food chain.
