Many have contemplated getting personalized license plates. There's no problem with them, and they lend a touch of personality to one's car. However, there are several things one ought to know before taking the plunge.

Thanks, Egon; important safety tip.

I dunno how thorough Ontario is. I have seen license plate "F U" here, presumably someone's initials who could get away with it. And just today I snapped a picture of license plate I1I11I1L. Apparently, a fan of xkcd. Would love to post the picture if someone could tell me how or give me permissions?

Western Australia uses the same sequence - but it's probably overkill. 1AAAnnn was issued in 1998 - I calculated that at current usage, we should get to 9ZZZnnn somwhere around the year 2750.

Actually, I think what probably happened is that the state government decided to use AAAnnn as the combination, and tacked a "1" on the front (as we'd previously been using nAAnnn) to make the plates unique Australia-wide.

I'm pretty sure they don't use the letter I on license plates for precisely this reason.

I noticed someone driving around with a license plate of XKCD driving through St. Louis. Who could that have been?

Any one of several hundred people, probably. It's not exactly an obscure webcomic.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

On another website somebody offered suggestions for the world's worst URLs. Things like

Reanimating this thread to say that I spotted a red sports car with a license plate of "88B8B8" on the highway this morning.

A cop friend of mine says he knows several cars in the area with "clever" license plates like that, and that they get a lot of tickets.

Was a "problem" for years with the in-game font in EVE. Is and ls, Bs and 8s, Ds and 0s, etc..

It's also a practice in Starcraft, whereby professionals (and others who want some amount of anonymity) use handles comprising |s and Is.
