I'd like to know if it's possible to get the whole image as one PNG. It appears to be a bunch of different ones stitched together with JS, and is quite tiring to navigate by touchpad.

I went to the left past the top of the building, and thought it was a cute idea. I got to the sailing ship, and realized just how awesome this strip is. I went further and got to the giant pit in the ground, and realized Randall's insane.

EDIT: Just emerged from the pit, scrolled back to the right to find the original hole I fell into, and hit the right-hand boundary of the world. What?....

According to the source, the full picture is 165888x79872 pixels in size. I'm working on downloading the whole thing and stitching it together/shrinking it down to get a overview of the whole thing... In the meantime, here's the left edge and the right edge.

[edit] For scale: judging based on the fact that most of the people seem to be around 30px tall, and guessing that to be about 6 feet, that would make the whole thing about 10km across, left to right.

I'm trying to work out how those folks on the left edge got past the raptors.

Also, I've hit some bugs. I was following the pit, and there were a few bits where the edge was slightly discontinuous, and then I hit a point where suddenly a section I'd seen before was all black, so I was stuck. Closed for now, I'll wait until there's either a "whole thing" version or some highlights of all the non-blank sections.

Randall, this is your masterpiece. Not only do I love all the nerdy references(anyone else find the Mario level with the pits below?) but you're truly conveying the vastness of the world and the wonder one can find in it. I found a whale leaping from the water. I found a lonely tractor by a big tree in a serene field. And I could almost feel like I was seeing these things for real. I wish I didn't have class in the morning, or I would not go to bed just to explore this.

I don't think I've seen anybody push the technology of "click and drag" beyond its useful limit until now. I guess there wasn't a way to make a more fluid scrolling system for the site.

I have this image in my head, Randall, whenever he's feeling sad, goes into his room and picks another square from the grid and just starts drawing. "When I finish all 1000 squares, my world will become reality..."

the URLs for the images are a grid. You start at 1n1w.png and as you move, it pulls in other images as needed. The letters correspond to the cardinal directions.

So far I've gathered that it's 33 tiles to the (w)est, and 48 tiles to the (e)ast from other posts. I believe that its 26 tiles deep. Anyone have a measurement on how tall it is?

I'm not sure Randall wanted an easier way to navigate this. It takes effort to experience much of the real world, I think he was trying to convey that in his comic too.

...or there were technical limitations, yeah.

I went left, found the tunnels, made mental notes to explore then ones that I bypassed, and ended up climbing out to the Mario level and continued right to the edge. No idea what else is in the tunnels (I found the facebook bit, the Minecraft Creeper, a really sad looking guy in the farthest southeast with some trees, and then a Pyramid? Before going straight up). Part of me wants to find the tunnels again and try the rest, but most of me is scared of spending another half hour in there.

I can't shake the feeling that Randall has been working on this one for years, and that it might be some sort of grand finale...

Favorite part of the tunnels: the pit with the fish jumping out of the water. Because even though in black and white the tunnel ends there, it keeps going and you'll never tell how far down it goes.

The filenames for each png are map coordinates of the form {1-9}[n|s]{0-9}{0-9}[e|w]. The map goes 33 west ("left") and 48 east ("right"). It isn't clear how much it goes north ("up") and south ("down"), but the most I've thus found is ~~8 12~~ 14 (the top of the first building to the left is http://imgs.xkcd.com/clickdrag/8n2w.png, the bottom of the pit is 12s17w.png). 1n1e.png is the centerpoint. The map space is not fully populated.

Also, has anyone identified top/bottom edges yet? If it's solid black or white I guess you couldn't tell by looking at it. I tried going straight up in the beginning but couldn't really tell you if I got anywhere, since I didn't count strokes going up and down. Some characters (to the left of the Mario world at the end of the tunnels) seem to be referencing stuff above (I did find a giant flying jellyfish there that scared the bejabbers out of me).
