Jurassic Park: The Lost World: The Film?

Pokemon. The "tall grass" is the first barrier to exploration in the game (once you get out onto the world map) - while in the tall grass, you get attacked by wild Pokemon. Until you get your first pokemon, and with it the ability to battle other pokemon, being attacked means you automatically get defeated (I believe you simply get teleported back to near where you entered the grass, but it's been a while since I saw the game being played).

No, you can't go into the grass without a Pokémon. Someone (Prof. Oak in the original, various generic people in other games) will stop you and tell you it's too dangerous.

Am I the only one who saw the tunnels as a refernce to Collosal Cave Adventure? "You are in a twisty little maze of passages, all alike. A hollow voice says, 'Plugh!'"

Regarding the 9 blank images, 11n11e, 11n11w, 11s11e, 11s11w, 1n4e, 1n5e, 2n1w, 2n3w, 8n1w, I considered that they might be references to comics.

1111 would be tomorrow’s comic, and EoinC and Loco have both already mentioned that 11x11y being blank could be a reference to the strip ending.

Comic 104, Find You, looks promising. It involves climbing through a cave.

105, Parallel Universe. This seems less relevant to the current comic.

201, Christmas GPS. Is there anyone making out in today’s comic?

203, Hallucinations. I’m doubting my theory.

801, Golden Hammer. Again, I don’t see the relevance.

Other than the 11x11y tiles, all of the blank tiles are next to occupied tiles and could have been unintentional.

This may not be a slick as the zoomable one, but I haven't seen it here yet and it's a pretty good effort:

I`m a long time reader and love this comic.

All I can say is that this is amazing and I need a poster!

I'll probably have to build a bigger room just to fit it, but so be it.

After exploring for so long in the caves I now have a huge urge to play Terraria again.

At 300dpi a poster would be over 46 feet wide and 22 feet high. I guess it could be wallpaper for an entire room.

My mind is now officially blown.

I wandered through as much as I could just scrolling, getting lost a lot. I found out that I could do a drag allll the way from the far edge of the image, on one monitor, to the far side of my other monitor.

I now have a headache and a mild case of motion sickness.

I may have been hallucinating a bit, but I think I also went right around the world.

I think I'll break down and look at some of the assembled images. But it's a lot more fun just wandering around!

Let me add to the conspiracy...

I'm surprised nobody among my geeky brethren have noted the possible meaning among the current comic number. 1110 is binary 14 which in the ASCII table is a control character equivalent to "shift out"

EoinC wrote:Bit of a negative thought

Has it dawned on anyone that this might be Randall's last (or second last) XKCD?

  • It's comic 1110; and comic 1111 would be a pretty nice nerdy-number to go out on.
  • there are 4 images in there (quoted below) which are completely blank
  • the right most edge of the comic is a ref to the very first comic and the balloon floating guy seems to be looking for other adventures
  • and it does feel a bit like an artists Magnum Opus

shashwat986 wrote:Why are 11s11e, 11s11w, 11n11w and 11n11e completely blank? The S ones are black, and the N ones are white. A rudimentary steganalysis reveals nothing.
(Before anyone asks, the images exist, and it isn't just being filled in)

I've hardly ever seen Randall add blank images for no reason, and the coordinates are oddly specific.

Logging in for the first time in a while to say this is my favorite of your strips. It's just brilliant. I also gave you grief on Twitter about all the time I'm going to lose this morning exploring.

I found the Nautalis.

Why has nobody mentioned the reference to the first strip? "I wonder where I'll float next", in the right border.

Did a quick search of the topic, found nothing, so... I found an X-wing when I kept going up past Icarus. There's so much white space... but I'm gonna see if I can keep going up.

Edit: And the X-wing is Red-5. Forgot that very important detail.

It will take time to explore this...I'm still trying to figure out the "lazy" way of doing it and just pulling out the inner image to view it all at once.

I'm diving down that long, long pit at the right...and if I don't run across Dig Dug somewhere down here, I'll be very disappointed.

Lots of fun! Thanks.

Edit: Holy smokes, a bridge down there? And is that "the hatch" from LOST right above it?

First: Wow!
2nd: ... we could create a wiki-mapia style Map: Pannable, Zoomable, and with links to pages explaining all the details that is found here.
3rd: Went to work 30 minutes later than I should have. -Full of a sense of wonder at the world. -and with some words from the first two Forum Pages in my head: Look for yourself. Panning up to 2GB, and that's as far as you get to look.
4th: Saw the morning sun, and the autumn colours, and last night's rain on the grass, and the freshness of the bushes, and the picturesque buildings (Lüneburg Germany has got those in spades.) And I was filled with the Wonder, the Sadness, and a sense of vastness. Randal had changed my day, and my outlook at the world.
5th: I changed my mind about the Wiki-map idea. We need to look through the whole thing ourselves. The exploring its self should be the goal, not the knowing and writing down. I ended up against even looking through the whole mad at once. Go out, look at the real world! It too is full of sadness and wonder. (Now if you're hospitalized, or in Quarantine, or it's 30 below outside, then hell yes! Take as many hours as you like with it! I'm somewhat jealous.)

6th: Delurked to say "WOW!" this map has changed my entire outlook.

Didn't see a mention of it, but if you want to view the thing full screen in your browser, open up the javascript console (ctrl+shift+j) and execute this:

Code: Select all

$("#comic").attr("style", "").css({"position": "absolute", "z-index": 1}).children("img").hide()

close the console and explore full screen :)

It seems that the right hand side is mostly musical references and games, the left hand side is movies and books. It's like a giant map of a mind.

While this entire comic is beautiful, I have to say my main thought as I explored was about those trees, man. They're gorgeous. I wish I could draw trees like that.

I've been reading since the beginning and finally just registered to comment on this masterpiece.

Has anyone else noticed (or commented; sorry I haven't read the whole thread) that the world (or part of it anyway) actually seems to change as you explore it? I went down into the tunnels on the left, passed the lemonade guy and ship, explored the tunnels in their entirety, and when I returned the vertical tunnel above the ship was sealed off (completely black) where it was not sealed before, and the lemonade guy was gone. I even returned to the surface and retraced my steps just to be sure I hadn't been tricked by a duplicate tunnel; sure enough it was the same tunnel and it was now sealed off.

Someone asked what's falling in 6n5w and I think it's some (sketchily drawn) jellyfish.

There are more jellyfish in this world (although the rest are drawn in much better detail)...

2n6e (Giant, and in the air!)

1s6w (3 relatively normal ones in the water west of the Burj Khalifa.)

2s9w (One smaller one, to the west of, and deeper than 1s6w, above, apparently surfing on its (underwater) computer.) (Someone stop me before the Comma and Parentheses Police take me away.)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________-

Someone else mentioned instances (1n15e, 6n2w) of BHG (Black Hat Guy) manning guns. There's another BHG (probably up to no good) climbing up one of the left-side guy wires of the radio tower. (There's also a girl sliding down one of the right-side guy wires.)

Hey all, I just found this low-res image of the full comic here: http://www.wickedglitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/result1.png
I think it does a good job of giving a map of the comic without fully spoilering.

This strip is amazing. I went all the way to the left, then through the caves, then back up, then found this link:
http://www.wickedglitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/result1.png
And found the underwater jellyfish (including the one at its computer!), the airplanes, rocket, hot air balloon, Icarus, and falling whales. Then went to the left edge, then to the right, and last hit the unloaded image blocks, which stopped my progress. Refreshed a few times, but they were still there, so I had to come to this forum to find out how to load the images piece by piece, so that I could finally see them all. And I'm glad I did. I think it might actually be easier to find those airplanes and jellyfish by loading the individual blocks than by clicking and dragging (since there's nothing like lots and lots of blank space to make me unsure if I'm going in the right direction).
