0299: "Aeris Dies"

Title text: It's bad enough that all the families in your Sims are just you and Maggie recreated over and over.

Ah so geeky!
I was wondering, in the light of the previous excellent comic, whether any readers detect any sort of development in these characters. Wouldn't it be strange if, for example, the 'hat guy' mellowed in later life or if another were to get married.

Or should their traits and idiosyncrasies remain immutable over time?

Is "maggie" a reference over my head, or just some name?

Hahaaa... I laughed good and hard at this one. I didn't get all that upset when she died. I think I played the game too late in life, and realized how... just... emo it all was. Aeris cosplayers are some great fun at the conventions though.

EDIT: Post count of win. W00t is to be had.

The first person to "correct" Randall with 'Aerith' is pre-emptively a douchebag.

I totally just started playing my boyfriend's PC version of FFVII for the first time two days ago; thanks for ruining it for me, Randall. <>

(Kidding, BTW: this actually spoiled it for me quite a while ago.)

*sob*

I stayed up all night to see this comic, however glad I am that I have seen it now, I can't help but think getting up early would have been more wise.

If it's a reference, it's over my head as well... anyone what to make me feel stupid and point out what it's a reference to, or is it in fact just a random name like it seems?

In the german version her name was translated to "Aeris", so he actually is quite right. I think the problem is the inconsistent romanisation of certain eastern asian languages ...

btw:
were there such mods for the ps1 version? or just for the pc version?

I like how prompt these comic updates are.
I don't like how it seems like I don't have a comic for monday, however...

Very funny!

Postby joey2264 » Mon Aug 06, 2007 4:56 am UTC

I only have basic familiarity with FF, but the ending of this was laugh-out loud funny. I don't laugh at almost anything, although I snorted and woke my roommate up due to this comment.

Thanks, guys! :P

a phoenix down doesn't bring people back to life, it removes the KO (knocked out) status effect and restores a small amount of HP, it does not restore life to the dead. Although it does remove death from the undead.

The only Aeris I know is the one from VG Cats... what's this about a new Final Fantasy game?

When I first read this title I thought it was some latin phrase I'd never read. I was thinking it meant "the air of the day" or some other thing. I never played finaly fantasy. It's actually a little refreshing when I don't get a reference on xkcd; it reminds me that there are geeks bigger than me out there and they get along in life just fine.

The important question is this: does this open the doors to xkcd slash or rule 34?

 no no no no no....

Oh, I guess I should do something on-topic...
Never really got far in VII -- maybe my expectations were too high, or I was too jaded by modern graphics, or maybe I just didn't like the cyberpunk feel. IX was the one for me, and the only one I ever finished.

Am I the only person on the planet that wasn't really all that sad when Aeris died? I mean, it was a bit sad, sure, but it wasn't mind-crushing by far. There have been worse things that have kept me up for a night after seeing. I just didn't find Aeris's death that sad.

I didn't play any of the FF games (in fact I've never touched a console, if this was a console game), but this strip is still plenty sad. :(

Never played Final Fantasy (I know, terrible. I fail as a geek)

But I did appreciate the Sims reference in the alt text. I love the Sims.

That's the most succinct "irrational with grief" I've ever seen. How ingeniously depressing.

The Futurama episode where Fry's nephew is named after him is MUCH sadder.

Seriously.

Although killing her off would be no disappointment.

That was even more funny, because I have a friend (a male friend) that uses the nickname Aeris and his girlfiend's name is Maggie. So after reading the title and the first panel I was like: o_O WTF!?

Anyway, another great strip.
