Thinking about it more, the idea of comparing the bottom two candidates and eliminating the least-approved one is a brilliant innovation. That way the eliminations are always decided by “how many people support each option”.
It also dramatically increases the value in voting for multiple candidates. Still doesn’t solve the “why should I vote for a super-popular candidate” issue of course, but I’m not sure any proportional system can totally eliminate that.
