It's easy to point to the worst elements of society, its failings, and say "what kind of society is this?" Is it fallacious? Not necessarily. Does it ignore the big picture? Most certainly. For example, you obviously haven't considered the One Laptop Per Child initiative, which works to address problems like this in third world countries by giving children greater access to education. That such an initiative could ever come into existence in this world would be my reason for having optimism about "this society".
