You forget, those poorer Republicans who would be seriously affected don't want the Affordable Care Act repealed, they only want O'bamaCare repealed. They know the Affordable Care Act was the best thing that ever happened to them, until O'bamaCare came and screwed it all up!

...Oh, apparently there's a word filter, maybe because of exactly that issue.

McCain is a 'no', so it's probably dead.

This is perhaps the most patronizing thing I could imagine someone saying. "We're doing this thing mainly because we promised to so we can be voted back into office and maintain our party in power". The sad thing is he's probably right in that even if this piece of garbage legislation goes through, people will see as "The Affordable Care Act repealed" and they'll keep voting republican. At least until they realize how much is screws them, but that'll probably be after the election so no loss there.

Remember how people complain about politicians not keeping their promises? They're keeping a promise they made, at probably a heavy political price in 2018.

I'm surprised McCain said no so quickly. I was expecting a more dramatic last minute thing to...cuz I like drama?

We don't have a third firm "No", yet, so there might yet be tasty, heart-wrenching drama. I'm also unnerved because I don't trust [that] Rand Paul [will stick to his guns] for shit.

Since this new bill is obviously even worse than the last one, logically the three GOP who voted No last time will do so this time. But since logic has nothing to do with politics this post was pointless.

You are correct. Every single time he's been needed, Rand Paul has given his vote to the establishment. That guy is a total sellout with a veneer of libertarianism. Nobody except rubes believes his heartfelt complaints about the healthcare bills will mean he will vote against it.

I'm surprised nobody is complementing the politicians for trying to keep their promise. Partisanship is a hell of a drug.
Keep an eye on Murkowski, I dunno what made her change her mind from a hard no to a maybe. There's been a ton of pressure lately ever since Keller switched sides.

The bill is pretty much engineered to profit Maine and Alaska, from what I understand.

Yeah, our (Maine) governor is on the cases of both Sen. King (independent but caucuses with Democrats, basically a certain no vote) and potential swing vote Collins (who, last I heard, was leaning no) to vote yes, saying that Maine was going to get something like 44% more federal money out of this deal. So quoth the radio, anyway.

Does LePage really have much influence at this point?

Not really, considering he fucked the state out of $165 million in Federal matching funds because he didn't get a tax cut he wanted for rich people.

From what I've seen since I came to Maine, people agree with LePage on Medicaid because they seem to think expanding Medicaid is "inviting" poor people into the state. Never mind that half the people in the state are poor.

Do you mean Sept 30? That's when Reconciliation ends. Supposedly they are either going to save 2018 reconciliation for tax cuts...unless the GOP decides to combine tax cuts with ACA repeal. Which is like playing tennis with a beehive, and then deciding it's more exciting if you do it while riding angry bears.

Summary of Trump Tweets since first (delayed) mention of Puerto Rico's problems with Maria (as a handy "thing he can actually do and say something positive about" benchmark, which also happens to be just after his 'written by somebody else, more media savvy' stuff) and got the following mess:

19th: Hurricane Announcement; Self-congratulatory UN thing; Reply to an ego boost; Emmys ratings; (RT: announcement about self); (RT partisan message);

20th: UN; NK; (RT an Ego Boost); Reply to an Ego Boost; (RT: partisan media coverage); Thanks FOX for an Ego Boost; (RT Ego message); Rand Paul, in negative light; Healthcare; Alabama/Strange; Jordanian Leader meeting; Palestinian Leader meeting; African Leaders meeting; (RT Pence on Healthcare); Jewish New Year; Alabama; R&R; Alabama; Healthcare; PR briefly mentioned;

21st: Afghanistanian Leader; Ukrainian Leader; South Korea; North Korea; Alabama; UN;

22nd: Paul Rand being threatened; North Korea; Replies to an Ego Boost; (RT: Ego Boost); (RT Texas/Harvey Ego Boost); Russia is hoax!/Crooked Hillary!; Fake News!/Crooked Hillary!; Alabama; UN; Non-specific hurricane stuff; Alabama;

23rd; McCain/R&R; Arizona/Healthcare; McCain/Arizona; Paul Rand being coerced; Alaska/Healthcare; Alabama; Disinvited sports team; NFL stuff (1/2); NFL stuff (2/2); FLOTUS; Iran; McCain/R&R; NFL thing;
24th: NK threat; NFL attendences(1/2); NFL attendences(2/2); NFL; NHL; (RT NFL boycott); (RT more NFL); NFL related; R&R; NFL; Immigrants;

25th (and into last 24 hours): NASCAR; NFL; NFL; Beautiful White House (is that the 'dump' one, or the one in Moscow?); NFL; (RT NFL boycott); NFL; NFL; NFL ratings; PR (1/3), pre-existing problems; PR (2/3), more on pre-existing problems; PR (3/3) yet more of those pre-existing problems, and a hint of help?; McCain/R&R; Alabama; NFL ratings; NFL ratings; NFL; Alabama; FOX (very early morning/late night, in the Presidential Timezone).

I don't know why I did this, it's just depressing. But, having done it, might as well share it. So FYI.

I couldn't believe those tweets about Puerto Rico and the fact that they are basically to blame for this.

That post above where I listed all the tweets? You can basically remove all the "Alabama" ones from the list, because Luthor Strange lost out to his GOP rival and Trump deleted all his "I support this guy!" messages afterwards.

I don't think some people realise how devastating a complete loss of infrastructure is, especially when you're on an island cut off from everyone else. There was an awful sky tv interview with someone from the BVIs after Irma saying that the GDP due to offshore banking is about the same as Britain, so why should they get any help (bear in mind, they are talking about actual British territories). As though have 90% of structures flatten, loss of power and potable water is something that you can just pull yourself back from.

The fact that the president of the USA has such views is also deplorable, but it's not like he's alone. Colonies don't deserve help because they're too rich or they're too poor. Either way, it's their own fault for causing 1% of carbon emissions.

BBC Radio 4 has plenty of high quality topical satire, but the long-running show Just a Minute, which is famously broadcast around the world, is normally a blandly apolitical affair. And yet, such are the times we live in, that even this hardy perennial of Sunday lunchtimes managed to get in an impassioned dig at the POTUS this week. The relevant topic is "Solar Eclipse", which starts around 11:40. Zoe Lyons manages to rant impressively on the subject without hesitation, deviation or (much) repetition for some 40 seconds. (Apologies if it's not available in your region).

Puerto Rico mayor invited to take part in White House conference call on hurricane disaster effort - but told she could not speak

The Mayor of San Juan was invited, for the first time, to participate in a conference call with top White House officials marshalling the response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico only to be told she could listen in only but would not be allowed to say anything.

Hours before Donald Trump was to touch down in San Juan on Tuesday, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, also said she had been given no information on what he planned to do upon his arrival or even if she was going to meet him to discuss the humanitarian catastrophe wrought by Maria.

“I read in tweet that someone said I got an invitation to see him,” she revealed as she gave The Independent a tour of a sports arena now converted into a distribution hub for pallets of food, water and other necessities that tens of thousands in her city still desperately need. “I haven’t.”

...

“Our focus is to bring the mayor into the coordination efforts,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. “This administration, as well as other members on the ground, have reached out to her. We hope that she will join with us in those efforts and be a part of things. She's been invited to participate in the events tomorrow, as well. And we hope that those conversations will happen and we can all work together to move forward.”

But Ms Yulin, who is now sleeping in cramped quarters with all her family and members of her staff at the sports arena, revealed that the conversation with Mr Bossert and other officials hadn’t quite been that. “I was invited to participate in a conference via a text,” she said. “I did. When I went into the call it said you are allowed in a listening capacity only…so I listened.”
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

Makes you wonder if Trump actually realises that North Korea has had different leaders during the last 25 years. I also still don't get what Trump is trying to do or whether he even realises that slinging threats and insults isn't going to make North Korea stop their nuclear program at all.

I liked how one headline for that on facebook was : Trump tells Puerto Rico that they made a big dent in the budget and gets more offensive from there.

Chucking some rolls of paper towels into a crowd. What a guy.

My Puerto Rican friend hasn't heard from his family yet. He and his sister sent some solar powered devices and hand-pumped water filters to them. It's hard to tell how worried he is.

I wonder if this will change the statehood debate at all. Or at least lead to the Jones Act being permanently lifted.
