In an article about the 1,200 wealthiest people in the world having one common pastime (Self-education through reading), a picture of Bill Gates is shown reading What if?

Can't post a link here without it being flagged as spam, but just google business insider rich people like to read

Cool!

I see the excellent Hyperbole and a Half in that pile, too. I've bought four copies of that, because I keep giving it away (with evangelical fervor).

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was about Gates claiming intellectual property rights to the book.

If the book exists in digital form, Gates owns it.

Gates even wrote a review of it on his blog, as well as one for "Thing Explainer".

The '90 called, they want their "joke" back.
That was pretty weak, I expect more from the Onion. In their attempt to pad the piece they made it nonsense, for example:
"Among Microsoft's vast historical archives are Sanskrit cuneiform tablets from 1800 B.C. clearly showing ones and a symbol known as 'sunya,' or nothing."
Two words: "Prior art"
if that is not enough, ""Microsoft has been using the binary system of ones and zeroes ever since its inception in 1975," 1998 - 1975 > 20 year patent term

When I read the topic title I assumed Gates bought the rights, after all, he gave some collector millions for the something written/drawn by some dead guy, supporting a living author seems reasonable. Just "claiming" IP sounds more like some other giant toy technology company.

Third.

I was like "wait, Randall sold Bill Gates the rights to the book?"

I didn't think the title meant Gates' owns the rights. I knew it exactly what it meant. True story. Do I get a "not confused by the ambiguity" medal?

And a gold star.
Mighty Jalapeno: "See, Zohar agrees, and he's nice to people."

Not how I say my name

Yeah, it's hard to believe that a parody website doesn't put more effort into things like fact checking and logical consistency...

I also own it!
Where are my billions?
The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
